Greetings!
I'm new to the list, and although not new to alsa, I'm new to "how it
works" ... in the past, I've just relied on it to do it's magic,
auto-configured as it was during the install :)
Anyway ... my goal, lofty perhaps, is to have multiple room music from
my linux machine, that is runnin

This may be what they are doing. I don't know enough about Alsa to
use the right terminology reliably.
Is there a book or a web site which has an explanation of Alsa for
non-experts? I'm

Thanks. As soon as I sent the message I found the "+20db boost" setting.

Most of the .asoundrc examples people post on the net are garbage.
Check the list archives for some better examples.
I've searched in the ml-archive but found no useable example. Can anyone
send me a good example for 5.1-Sound (not SPDIF) and dmix ??
There's still no easy way to do this. T

The .spec file is something with rpm. It is the file that gives rpm the

That's completely broken (though unrelated to your problem), please
report it to the Gizmo developers as a bug.
For example this can't work on hardware that only supports 48000H
This seems like a simple question, but I'm stumped. I have a
relatively inexpensive Altec Lansing headset with headphones
and a mic. I don't have the model number, but they cost me
about 45/USD at BestBuy a week ago, if that gives you an
idea of their level. I have two sound cards on my system.

Clemens, Takashi,
Thanks for your response. I have two follow-up questions.
I am unable to play mu-law files.
ALSA does support mu-Law.
If I try
aplay file.wav
I get the error message
aplay: test_wavefile:726: can't play not PCM-coded WAVE-files

Kernel version ("uname -a")? ALSA version (/proc/asound/version)?
