Whenever I use xmms to play music, the sound gets all jerky, and skips
several seconds at a time. I routed the stereo sound through all the
speakers in a 7.1 setup using:
pcm.!default {
type route
slave.pcm surround71
slave.channels 8
ttable.0.0 1 #channel 0 to f

The I/Os are supposed to be availabe for the PC. At least under Windows,
that's what it's all for.

If you are using JACK, why don't you use ac3jack?

it encodes ac3 on-the-fly - works fine for me
