Duh. I assume that everyine knows I'm running alsa-1.0.4, and that
the kernel, version 2.6.5-mm3, has been rebuilt 4 or 5 times since
installing the alsa-drivers-1.0.4 stuff from a tarball. My method of
doing this means that the /lib/modules/kerbel.version modules tree
gets r

I note that I'm getting quite a few error messages like this, although
the audio seems to be working:

I just switched sound cards, from my old SB128 to the mainboards SiS SI7012
(intel8x0) using Alsa 1.0.4 built with the RPM scripts and noticed this error
in the .xsessions file,

forgot to say: "front", "rear" and so on also are kind of "hw"
devices, they don't convert formats.
