I've been trying to get ALSA to work on Gentoo for the past couple of days.
I've got the modules to load, but I am still getting an error when I try to
do anything. Amixer says "No such device" while mythtv reports "cannot open
/dev/dsp".
When I first installed /alsa, I had a symlink in place

Usually you get compilation errors when you try to compile alsa

Standard RH7.3 kernel (an all updates)
was compiled with gcc-2.96, while you may have
upgraded gcc since then to 3.1/3.2. If so, install compat-gcc296 package

no errors.
