Have you tried defining them as ADSM devices (thru smit option if I
remember correctly) - I think that was how I did it but
it wa 2 years ago and I've not got a manual !!!

These failures are probably the "controlling" sessions. The backups are
probably working but the sessions which
run them are timing out - check how long they run for and your timeout
option.
