Thanks for the response Stef.
I was also told that somewhere down the road, the 2 products will work
together. They couldn't say when that would be though.
Del was kind enough to point me in the right direction with a knowledgeable
contact for FastBack... so hope to know much more next week.

I agree with you Stef. I don't understand why this said product as part of
TSM but they don't really integrate with the current TSM we use. Anyone can
answer this? Hopefully for future development IBM can make this much
better.

The "why" is pretty simple.
The product was originally called FilesX, developed by a different company.
Purchased by IBM, renamed to TSM FastBack.
So it isn't integrated into TSM YET, but that doesn't mean it won't be
eventually. To what extent remains to be seen.
Originally designed as a disk-t

If you want to run backup 5 times and get 5 versions, use "dsmc sel". That
says "backup whether changed or not".

Is there a "realistic" maximum number of files a Windows client can handle
before having this kind of problem?
This system has 30-40 MILLION objects/files.
Not sure if this error is caused by the large number of files or a client

Hi Zoltan,
I've seen the problem on clients with as few as 10m files.
When you do a typical incremental backup, the first thing that happens is
that the server pushes down to the client a list of the "active" backup
set.
The problem is with the client handling that list.

What does one think will happen if one needs to restore all of these files?
Are you coupling traditional TSM backup with backup image? I'm thinking a
restore of 10M files will take something like 50-100 hours to complete, if it
completes...

Correction:
When I said "active backup set, that was a bad thing to call it.
What I meant was a list of the active versions stored on the server for that
client.
The client compares against that list to determine if a file has changed or
been deleted since the last backup.

Restoring is not the biggest problem, properly setting expectations is the real
problem. If you can get the data back you are doing your job, if the user
understands the consequences of having a file system that has too many objects
then you have done a good job.
