There's no reason you can't share the library. The 3584 supports partitioning. Unlike in your 3494 where the Library Manager controls what tapes go to what host via category codes, in the 3584 you partition the library into multiple 'virtual' tape libraries, so some slots and drives are visible

We are currently in the same situation, 3584 6x LTO1 drives, all but 10 slots filled in the library. We have been look at switching the drives to either lto2 or 3 and adding the expansion frame to the library. We are now comparing these costs to a Virtual Tape solution, so far the Virtual tape look
