I have implemented the use of two different nodenames on the same server
only because I wanted to have the same node backing up files or databases
using a different policy set (and thus different management class). If the
data you'll be backing up can follow the same rules then there's no point

Have just been asked to include an SQL server into our TSM backup routine.
My problem at the moment is knowing what to exclude/include ( in terms of

Hi
We have tested LTO1 tapes in a HP MSL5030 with two LTO2 Drives.
But we have always copied the data stored on the tapes to a disk pool.
Then we relabeld the LTO1 tapes in the LTO2 drives and wrote the data back
onto the tapes.
We have never tested to read the data of LTO1 tapes written by LTO1 d
Hi *SM-ers!
It doesn't look like a April fools joke: IBM has published the 5.1.7 clients
on the FTP server yesterday. The only one that's missing/incomplete is the
Windows client...

These is a TDP Informix backup tape(s). The DBA runs the onbar backup with
3-streams direct to tape over the SAN. He wants to be able to restore the
database in the case of a disaster using those same 3-streams. If TSM copies
the data to a copypool, then the data will probably be combined onto a

Hi
Have you looked at the option of set drmprimstgpool.
These primary storage pools with the above option would be managed by DRM.
You would not have the below problem.
DRM/TSM would manage all of this for you.

Hi,
yes you can have both lto1 and lto2 tapes in a lib with lto2 drives,
the chip inside the tape identivies what kind of tape it is, so no need to go
through a diskpool.

Hi
With the option of set drmprimstgpool, you do not have to do any of the below.
It would be just like setting up the DRM for Copystgpools.
DRM manages and dictates which tapes would have to go offsite and which tapes comes
back onsite.
You would not encounter problems like what you are having
Moses,
Are you using Data Protection for SQL?
It is a specialized TSM client that will perform online
backup and restore of Microsoft SQL Server databases.
The User's Guide for that book will help to explain
how to set it up.

I was told long ago that if you have not used a Node in 30 days, it no longer uses a license. For our system we have to buy our node licenses in groups of 10, even if we only need 1 or 2. This works for us because there are always licenses available when a client

I didn't really expect so many replies, but unfortunately they are all different, and
I 'm still little bit confused what to do. I didn't understand if you are using OFM

If you do not want to use TDP for MSSQL, you can just run regular old SQL
backups (we do - they work great). All of those get copied to a folder named
"SQLBackups" on one of the drives of any SQL server.
Our dsm.opt file looks like the following:
Include "d:\SQLBackups\...\*" DBDUMPS

Hi Joe,
I would be skeptical of using any "open file" software to back up
an application that implements a complex database technology.
You are talking about backing up the files that a
live application uses to store the data. It is true that
"open file" support will allow you to get a snapshot of
Maybe I am missing something here but based on the origonal question. Just set the
reuse delay value on the primary pool that you are vaulting. When scratch tapes don't
go pending and them empty it is because the reuse delay is set to 0. Once you set it
to a value say, 2 then the tapes will go

Is this a workable configuration ?
So far, all of my attempts at making this work, say it isn't.
The major problem is that as soon as I enable the 3494/3590E1A drives on

Zoltan,
My Windows is Win2K and my 3494 is Lan not SAN; BUT:
You are using the IBM MAGSTAR drivers for the 3590 drives, yes?
So you don't need the TSM device driver started.
AND,
on Win2K, you have to go in to Windows services and DISABLE the Windows RSM
service when you are using the 3590's,

Thanks for the suggestions.
I checked again and the service labeled as "Removable Storage" was not

Yes, these are FC attached Magstar 3590E1A drives, so they have to be
accessed/shared via SAN and TSM Library Sharing.

Windows does the device number assignment.
According to the doc for the Windows TSM server,
you use the TSM SCSI drivers for 3590 drives with a TSM 5.1 server, BUT
you must use the Magstar tape drivers INSTEAD of the TSM SCSI driver with a
TSM 5.2 server.

This is one of the many ways you can do this "cross-client"
restore
When you use the "-fromenode" option, you first need to go to
the host that originally backed up the data and run a "set access"
command. Basically, you are telling TSM that this node has access to the
data.
This is a new 5.2.2.x install.
The drivers are labeled IBM. I am pretty sure I got them from IBM Magstar
support, directly.!

Ya, the -virtualnode is another way to do it.
The issue I have with using this method very often is that the
person running the restore command is required to put in the client's

That seems to be the issue. When these primary pool volumes contain no data,
TSM immediately returns them to scratch. Even though I had them as
ACC=UNAVAIL. Then when I did the Q VOL STG=PRODIFX* STATUS=EMPTY I got
nothing. They had already transitioned through the EMPTY status back to
scratch.
