Have worked with AIX for some years. Not a REAL detail person on this
but basically my understanding is
e-formatted; their
size does not change.
So what is the JFS overhead when TSM is writing into those files?
Thanks!

- Raw logical volumes ought to be faster than a single large file because
there is no JFS overhead. What if the disk keeping the jfslog volume is
very busy. And there were many threads on this list regarding TSM log

Hi Eric,
I assume, for performance reasons you wil not make one big filespace per
disk. But about your question: I think that there will always be an little
bit of space wich can't be used because. On AIX the Inode uses an littlebit
of space wich can't be used for TSM-files. I could not find any

Hi Eric,
For your question, the answer is: ' dsmfmt -data ' creates a XX+1MB file
If your 36 GB disks are for disk pools, did you ever think about using RAW
devices instead.
Perfs are better because you have not the JFS overhead. In counterparse,
you need to migrate
you disk data everyday to
There's also the overhead of the JFS filesystem. When you create with
"Large File" also don't use defaults, use "Number of Bytes per inode" of
at least 32768 and this will give you a few more hundred MB of space.
After FS is created, use df -k to see what you actually have available and use

It does require a 1MB overhead! e.g.
root@ / > dsmfmt -m -da
In the Admin Reference for v3.7 it says...
the allocated file size is always a multiple of 4MB plus an additional 1MB
ofr overhead).
Don't know how much that will help answer your question.
Thanks,
Jon

I just experienced this same problem this weekend when re-defining some
disk storage pools. I was using the DEFINE VOLUME command instead
Hi Eric,
I experienced that it is not possible to fill the disk completly.
If I had 1000MB free space, i'll be able to fill it j.l. to 981MB. Even
there is some space left, if i try to make the file 985MB, it said that it
is not possible. Don't ask me why
Most of the times i need to keep 20-2
1 MB overhead

Hi Eric,
I re-read "TSM implementation guide" Redbook a couple of minutes ago,
and they don't speek about any overhead space for a data volume, what
they specify is that if you want to format a db volume, then the
allocated file size is always a multiple of 4 MB plus an additional 1 MB
