Excellent!
My thoughts exactly re the Information Center.
One can find what you already know about (to clarify a detail), but getting the
big picture view requires that 1,000 pages and more of the Admin Guide.

I could not have expressed my own opinions better- thank you Roger.
I still remember being skeptical going from the IBM Red Books (real paper) to
PDF's.
But it's not the same leap going to online "information centers". With each
new release, I try again, but I am always disappointed. Maybe it's
I'm glad that the last PDFs of this valuable book at Version 7.1.1 are
being made more widely available. I have already downloaded that PDF to
the USB thumb drive I carry around everywhere, for access regardless of
the network condition. This could be in a disaster recovery scenario, or
at a client
Following up on this thread, the 7.1.1 Administrator's Guide PDFs are now
available in IBM Knowledge Center at

This is in addition to where they were available before, in the .zip file
and on the Tivoli
documentation, I wonder how far they would get. This is why this mailing

There are a large number of areas that cannot be covered separately. A
very large topic is Policy, which is one of Spectrum Protect's hardest
to understand areas, yet it affects and is affected by everything else.
One more on the topic: the admin guide has always been a great starting
point for a one-stop doc to set aside printed documentation for a true dr:

Hi Clare. The Admin Guide provided a one-stop shopping approach to all
functional areas of Spectrum Protect. I think this is what's missing from
the current documentation. Clearly the Admin Guide was aimed at an
experienced person as opposed to a novice. In an initial Spectrum Protect

Please be assured that we in IBM development are listening and are
discussing future actions regarding the Administrator's Guide content
since the feedback about the 7.1.3 release that did not include that book.
I gave some information in a response to that earlier feedback:

Hi Stephan,
Our concern is about Administrator's Guide, not Administrator's Reference wich
is hopefully still available.
Last available version for this Guide is 7.1.1.

Hi all,
the Admin Guides are still there. May be a little complicate to identify.
If you look in this page "Server documentation in PDF files":

you can find a row for "Using commands and options " for e

I agree many times I have had to refer to one of the PDF's after IBM has
made the decision to remove it from availability.
They are a priceless resource when dealing with an issue on a version that is
no longer supported and hence online doco has been removed.

One speaker from IBM on the TSM Symposium in Germany last September told us
that this was a money driven decision. Apparently creating an Admin Guide is a
very expensive process. He also stated that if we customers still feel this
manual should return, we should request for it through our IBM co

Why stop publishing them (particularly in pdf form?)
