Can you write to the tape drive with tar? If so the problem may be with the

Have you done all the normal AIX checking using the following commands:
lsdev -Cctape (Check if the tape drive is available and not defined) errpt
-a |grep rmt (check to see if the tape drive has had any errors) fuser
/dev/rmt2 (to see wh

keep getting the following error:-

Either write protected or in use.
