We have SEPATON here. SEPATON is a 'standalone' solution vs 'integrated'
that you get with EMC. That is, with standalone, TSM has full control of
all onsite and offsite tapes. With an integrated library, TSM lost control
of all offsite tapes. This just makes an additional point of failure.

When asked to 'replace' them, did he answer 'yes' or 'yes to all'?
Yes, you can restore to an alternate location that is also a different
server. You need to set up permission for that server to restore the
'originating' server's data, and on the destination side, you must access

Hi Paul,
No, it cannot be done. We've proved it here by taking a TSM data snapshot
and attempting to restore it a newly built TSM server on LINUX. This is
the result. Unfortunately, the EXPORT / IMPORT option is your only
alternative. You may selectively choose what to export out to cut d
If you are only running with one set of executables, then you only
need to perform an upgrade db to the 2nd.
1. Halt the 2nd TSM instance
2. Change directories to the second (whatever path it is)
3. EXPORT the DSMSERV_CONFIG= to the path of the 2nd instance dsmserv2.opt

After a thorough review we went with SEPATON. We haven't had any
problems. Their support team is excellent.

Chip,
We purchased the S2100 last year. We have our TSM servers running on AIX.
The S2100 works like a charm. No problems whatsoever. We were hitting the
wall with the tape library. Now the VTL holds most of the primary pool data
while freeing up the library for archive processing.

Hello,
We backup the databases to local drives then have TSM pick the backup files.

We need to back up MSSQL databases, but they need to be closed to the RDMS
first. Has anyone done that? We do not have the Tivoli TDP agent, nor any
other
agents that handle open database files. I am not the best script writer,
but I was
thinking to build a script somewhat like the following:
We were looking into it initially, but if I remember correctly, it required
a TSM V5.3 server (AIX), that we didn't have. So, we went with a different
vendor.

Be careful with this one. We just purchased a VTL ourselves.
We are running TSM 5.2.3. We are currently waiting for a fix
with the vendor in order to configure TSM.
In TSM V5.3, the code seems to have loosened up. Verify that

I prefer AIX over all of them. This is the only UNIX
operating system that can create, via mksysb and savevg
utilities, a complete bootable media. We have already
had to perform a full server restore on Solaris. We
needed to recustomize it. There is no need with AIX!
