There are quite a few operations that take the VTL offline. The word
"temporary" is a bit of a stretch too. Mine take 25 mins to go offline
and back. Though I understand the time relates to the size of the VTL.
Agreed though, hardly "enterprise class".

Default status on a checkin is "private" so that might be why it came in
that way.
If you do a "q vol " and nothing is listed, that would indicate it
is not part of a storage pool (but could still be a dbb or dbs or export,
etc...) but those would show in your volume history file...

Check your volume history backup files. They are plain text files. Do a
backward search from the bottom and you wil find its last reference.
IT is probably a database backup.

This volume is not shown in Q VOL, but like u asked I did CHECKIN LIBVOL
SEARCH=YES
After that, missing tape appeared in Q LIBVOL, its private (used by tsm, but
last use is empty) weird ?
How can I check is it assigned to any pool?
Private means its being in use by tsm right?

Also, q libv will show all tape in the library known to TSM, even the scratch
tapes that do not show up in q vol or q volhist.

Did you run a checkin libvol using search=yes to see if TSM finds the extra
