What version of tsm server?
I have successfully restored a db from a solaris server to the Z linux
platform. This was version 5.5.2 if memory serves.
IBM doesn't support this, but it does work.

Hello Nora,
you're not telling us the version of the TSM-Server on the broken
Solaris System. If it is a Version 5 Server, there is the possibility to
migrate the TSM-DB to Linux and thus preserving the data in the library
for further use.
This is possible with TSM 7.1, have a look into the
Unfortunately I am not able to do an export node because the old server cannot
access the tape library. Now all I have is the tapes themselves, and the
database which I cannot restore to the new server running a different OS...any
advise please ?

If the data is on tape, and you can't connect the old server to the tape
library, could you connect it to a stand-alone LTO4 tape drive that you could
plug directly into the Solaris server? Those aren't so hard to come by, might
be a cheap solution. You don't need the original library, only a
As others have said, the best way is to recover the old server (assuming
you can get the hardware).
IBM do offer a recovery service (I've used it), assuming the tapes have not
been overwritten, I'd expect you to get everything back.
It's not cheap though and I'm pretty sure you'll need a server a
Nora,
If you are able to bring up the old TSM server, you could do a export node
directly to the new TSM server, provided that the two can communicate via
TCP/IP with each other. I believe that TSM 7.1 allows you to restore UNIX
operating systems TSM database backups into the new server, thoug
Without the database, it's basically impossible to get structured data off
storage pool volumes. If you can get a Solaris 10 server up and running
with the old database, you can use EXPORT NODE (either to sequential media
or directly to the new server) to move the data to the new server.

Hello,
We recently lost a TSM server because of a severe server hardware problem that
makes the tape library completely inaccessible to the server. We are now
building a new TSM server and connecting the library to it. However the new TSM
server we are building is on a different OS (Red Hat linu
AFAIK any NAS box that supports NDMP can be backed up to TSM via TCP/IP and
ends up in the regular storage pool hierarchy, i.e. disk is fine.
But I don't know that the NDMP protocol knows how to do a non-tape fibre
connection, any more than TSM does.
Do you have any documentation on how that w
It includes any volumes still associated with the storage pool, so it does
include pending volumes.

Does the numscratchused field in the stgpools table include tapes that are in
the pending status or only those in filling and full status?

Try this. From each of your TSM servers issue the commands below.
Look over the output for clues. By adding the word, help, in front of
each command you will get a nice explanation of the command and the
expected output. You can also post the output back here for us to look over.

Hi Remco!
I heard that IBM will not offer extended support for 5.5. I'll have to
check with our sales rep.
I do accept that it won't break. It has been running fine for years, so
one can say it's proven technology by now. The only problem is that my
customers will probably not accept it...
Kind reg
RPQ for extended support? If the DB is important enough that should fly :)
Or just accept that it won’t break just because support ends….

Hi guys!
We still have several systems running Oracle 9 databases. Some of them
can't be upgraded because the application on top of the database does
not support Oracle 10 (yet). Anyway, Oracle still delivers sustaining
support for Oracle 9, but support for backing up their databases
