[WiX-users] CAQuietExec - Requires VC runtime redist?

2014-05-22 Thread Gabi Ganam
In a machine without VCRedist, I get the following error:

MSI (s) (D8:C8) [14:31:44:359]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL:
C:\Windows\Installer\MSIBA1E.tmp, Entrypoint: CAQuietExec
CAQuietExec:
CAQuietExec: ??
??4??4???>???+?
CAQuietExec: Error 0xe0434352: Command line returned an error.
CAQuietExec: Error 0xe0434352: CAQuietExec Failed

Installing the VC++ 2008 redistributable solves it.

Obviously I have the VC 2008 in my installation (as merge modules, gathered
under a Feature element), as my product requires them too.
So - how come they aren't installed in time for CAQuietExec?
How can I set it so they will be installed first, so that the CA won't fail?

Thanks,
Gabi.

Re: [WiX-users] CAQuietExec - Requires VC runtime redist?

2014-05-22 Thread Gabi Ganam
It is too big a change, is there a way to force the merge modules to be
installed first?
They are gathered as 1 "Feature", and my entire product is another "Feature".
And it seems that you're correct - it's not the CA that requires the VC, it is
my program (which the CA executes).

I guess I'll bundle it with the VC exe install in the next version, but for now
- I need a small, safe, easy, quick solution :)

Thanks,
Gabi.

I'd suggest you need a bundle which installs the vcredist first (using the exe
version) and then runs your msi.

(It is not CAQuietExec that requires VC I would assume it is whatever you are
running with it.)

Re: [WiX-users] CAQuietExec - Requires VC runtime redist?

2014-05-22 Thread Gabi Ganam
OK, thanks Neil!

Perhaps you can assist me with a different issue I'm having with WiX;
I'm installing an unmanaged c++ windows service, using the standard MSI
InstallServices action (in wix, "ServiceInstall" element).
Right after "InstallServices" I have a custom action that sets this service's
start type according to an installation parameter.
This action is written in c++, and uses the standard API function:
ChangeServiceConfig.
Now for some reason, on windows 2012 only, the service is installed in
"Disabled" mode, and the ChangeServiceConfig function fails with the error:
"The specified service has been marked for deletion.".
This causes my installation to fail and rollback.

The question is - what's the issue with the service installation?
The log seems to say that the action completed OK:
"Action ended 17:45:13: InstallServices. Return value 1."

Thanks,
Gabi.

Happens on a clean install.
More info - my service is an ATL service, and I recently discovered that it is
the "myapp.exe /service" command that causes the service to become "marked for
deletion"...
Again - this happens on windows 2012 only!
Frustrating...

Re: [WiX-users] CAQuietExec - Requires VC runtime redist?

2014-05-25 Thread Gabi Ganam
I am using WiX to install the service, and after that, in addition, the
installer runs the "/service" command.
I don't know why it is executed, it is an old piece of code that has a very
alarming comment, something like;
"Even though the installer installs the service, the /service command is
necessary! DO NOT REMOVE".
So naturally I'm afraid to remove it :)

Any idea what this command does, that may not be accomplished by the WiX
installation of the service?

Thanks,
Gabi.

Are you installing this as a service using the WiX elements or trying to run
the app with /service? I would strongly advise using WiX not trying to run the
app. That will probably sort you other problem as well.

[WiX-users] Setting a property in a wix (burn) bundle

2014-06-02 Thread Gabi Ganam
Hi!

I have a WiX bundle executable (using Bundle/Chain/MsiPackage elements) I use
to install 2 different MSI packages.
I already have several MSI properties as Variable elements that are defined in
the bundle and passed along to the MSI packages as MsiProperty elements.
My question now is, how can I easily set a property in the bundle, without
rebuilding, without using command line parameter?
To be clearer - if it was an MSI, I could have just edited the Property table
and changed whatever property I like.
But my bundle is an .exe file.
So - assistance will be welcomed!

Thanks :)

Both of my MSI packages support downgrade, buy when I try to downgrade the wix

I really need to support downgrading, how can I do that?

That is indeed awesome, but does he also have an answer? :)

Small update...
I took a look at the bundle code and added the "SuppressDowngradeFailure",
which gets rid of the error message -
but still doesn’t execute the MSIs and thus does not performs the desired
downgrade.
