Any ideas as to when this might be ready for an initial release? Just
wondering if I should bother trying to get this done with some custom
actions or not.

I don't mind doing some beta testing if that could help.

Hi,

Is there a way to install a COM+ Application with WiX 3.0 (and Votive)? I
couldn't find the Pubca extensions anywhere..?

[WiX-users] Shortcuts and ICE

2007-01-03 Thread Bart Kapitein
Hello,

I have read several other messages about shortcuts and I understand that
shortcuts are very difficult. I have successfully created advertised
shortcuts, but I am unable to create unadvertised shortcuts.

What I do is the following:

I create the following directory structure:
ProgramMenuFolder\VendorName\ProductName.
Building this gives me 4 errors: ICE18, ICE38, ICE64, ICE64. I solve the
ICE18 and ICE64 errors by creating a component in the directory with two
removeFolder actions (one for the ProductName folder and one for the
VendorName folder).

I solve the ICE38 error by adding a RegistryKey entry in the HKMU with
key Software\VendorName\Productname\Version\Install.
This key will be created in HKLM on a per-machine installation and in
HKCU on a per-user installation (which is correct I think).

Now I can create advertised shortcuts in this directory. I do this by
adding a child shortcut element in a file element. This works.

Now the unadvertised shortcut:

I create another component in the
ProgramMenuFolder\VendorName\ProductName directory. In the component I
add a shortcut which is unadvertised.
Building this gives me 3 errors: ICE18, ICE38, ICE43. I solve the errors
by creating a RegistryValue in the HKMU with the key
Software\VendorsName\ProductName\Version\Install\UnadvertisedShortcut
and an integer value of 1. (which is the same solution as described
above for the directory structure in the start menu).

Building this gives me 1 error: ICE57. It claims that the component has
per-user data and a keypath that can be per-user or per-machine. That I
don't understand. When a per-machine installation is done, the shortcut
is created in the "all users" start menu and the registry key is created
in HKLM. (is the "all users" startmenu a user directory?)

I also tried to change the location of the registry key to HKCU. This
solves the ICE57 error, but then the key is created in the registry of
the user who is installing the application. Even when a per-machine
installation is done. I don't think this is correct. (Correct me if I'm
wrong)

For now I decided to use advertised shortcuts. But it would be nice to
use unadvertised shortcuts too. I wonder how a Wise or InstallShield
installation deals with this problem.

An example with a working advertised shortcut and a failing unadvertised
shortcut:

Re: [WiX-users] Shortcuts and ICE

2007-01-03 Thread Rob Hamflett
Your right about the ICE warnings be a complete pain for unadvertised
shortcuts. The problem is
that someone could change the value for ALLUSERS in your installation package,
and the ICEs allow
for this. Many of us just ignore them.

[WiX-users] UI Notifications

2007-01-03 Thread Levi Wilson

I'm probably missing something very simple (very new to Windows Installer),
but is there a way to be notified by a dialog somehow when text changes? Or
some way to subclass a control? The reason I ask is that for the MaskEdit
control I have a CA that gets called when "Next" is pressed that sets a
"MyProdIDIsGood" whenever the entered serial has been validated. The edit
control also is disabled whenever that property is set. However, this only
happens when scrolling to the next or previous dialogs, and then I go back
since it takes place in the DlgInit. I just wanted to be able to have this
take place whenever the user enters a valid serial, such as how MS products
display a checkbox icon or something whenever the serial number has been
entered correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could you not attach the Custom Action to the 'Next' button. I think the
actions are performed in
order, so if you had the first one set an 'OK' property, you could then use
this as a condition for
showing the next dialog or popping up a 'bad prog ID' message. I think I have

Sorry if I was not very clear. What I'm trying to achieve is as the user is
typing in the serial number, I want to be notified of text changes so I
could say enable the next button, or trigger a CA to custom verify the
serial, and then display a check mark indicating that the serial has been
verified. I already have it so when I click next nothing happens if the
serial hasn't been verified, I was just curious if you could attach yourself
to the dialog to be notified of these messages.

that for the MaskEdit control I have a CA that gets called when "Next"
is pressed that sets a "MyProdIDIsGood" whenever the entered serial has
been validated. The edit control also is disabled whenever that
property is set. However, this only happens when scrolling to the next
or previous dialogs, and then I go back since it takes place in the
DlgInit. I just wanted to be able to have this take place whenever the
user enters a valid serial, such as how MS products display a checkbox
icon or something whenever the serial number has been entered
correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is it possible to optionally display a dialog in the wizard sequence

[WiX-users] Upgrading not doing anything

2007-01-03 Thread Aaron Feng

I'm having trouble doing a minor upgrade for an existing MSI. The new
upgrading MSI run without errors, however, it does nothing. I checked the
log file during an upgrade, nothing seems particularly interesting. If I
run the new MSI by itself (installing in this case), it works just fine. I
tried to play with the REINSTALLMODE, and changing the version number on my
assemblies. Nothing seems to work. I also noticed after an upgrade (didn't
actually work), uninstalling the application doesn't actually do anything.
It uninstalls without any errors, but no files are actually removed from the
disk.

I'm not sure what information I need to provide here, since I'm not getting
any error messages. I basically followed the instructions in the WiX
tutorial lesson 4 (http://www.tramontana.co.hu/wix/lesson4.php).

Thanx,

[WiX-users] MSBuild generated bootstrapper and quiet mode

2007-01-03 Thread Petr Vones
Hi,

I use msbuild to generate standard bootstrapper (using GenerateBootstrapper
element) which produces setup.exe and several depended folders with selected
prereqesites.

My question is whether I can run the setup.exe in a "quiet" mode with no UI
interaction (license dialogs displayed by the setup.exe etc).

I'm aware it is a bit OT here but haven't found anything useful about it.

Thanks, Petr

Have you tried running it from an elevated command prompt? That
sometimes helps with COM registrations (despite the fact that the
'canary' keys that HKCR, etc, are redirected to should be editable by a
non-admin user, I found that a low-privileged account didn't always work

I wonder if Vista's own registry redirection feature for legacy
applications gets in the way here. Does tallow have a manifest to
specify asInvoker privilege level?

Re: [WiX-users] MSBuild generated bootstrapper and quiet mode

2007-01-03 Thread Francis Kam

I'm not really sure what the answer is to this, but to me it doesn't seem
the ideal approach. The point of the bootstrapper is to make it easier for
the user to install without having to figure out the exact dependencies and
so on. For unattended installs, the admin usually knows the dependencies,
and you can silently install the prereqs before silently installing the MSI.
Is there a particular scenario you're thinking of for this?

2007-01-03 Thread Wilson, Phil
I can't tell what's actually going on with those versions either.
Changing file versions is a requirement for a minor upgrade to be
useful, so I wonder what Aaron did. You're supposed to update versions
of files that have changed, build an MSI file with a new PackageCode but
the same ProductCode (and an incremented ProductVersion usually) and
then install with:
msiexec /i REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus
where that 'o' is "replace older versions with newer versions of files".
So if you don't change file versions there won't be any code files
updated.

Phil,

I did everything you said. I don't know what going on either. I found out
the hard way that I need to change the version of the file in order for the
minor upgrade to work. I even try to do vamus instead of vomus, but still
no luck.

I even wrote a program to retrieve the file version, just to make sure the
version of the files are different.

The weird part is, nothing happens, no errors during an upgrade. Each MSI
work indepenently of each other, but I can't upgrade from one version to the

Is there a way to install a COM+ Application with WiX 3.0 (and Votive)? I
couldn't find the Pubca extensions anywhere..?

Regards,

Sorry if I was not very clear. What I'm trying to achieve is as the
user is typing in the serial number, I want to be notified of text
changes so I could say enable the next button, or trigger a CA to
custom verify the serial, and then display a check mark indicating
that the serial has been verified. I already have it so when I click
next nothing happens if the serial hasn't been verified, I was just
curious if you could attach yourself to the dialog to be notified of
these messages.

Nope. The MSI doc
 says

You can run custom actions
 by publishing a
ControlEvent from a PushButton control
 or Checkbox
control .

The edit controls don't support DoAction control events.

Yes, it is but it's not terribly straightforward. The wizard sequence is
faked in that the Back and Next buttons manually point to the right
dialogs. To support branching, you need to have a dialog's Next button
point to two different dialogs conditioned on the feature's action state.

Unfortunately, I don't know of any examples. I hope to eventually add
dialogs to the server custom actions and they'll demonstrate what you
need. Unfortunately, that's a ways off yet.

General info: The command lines you're using to install and upgrade.
Excerpts from verbose logs, especially around InstallValidate (as
Michael points out).
