Or, just press SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+DEL
Works on most NT based systems.

RE: how do i start by remote

2001-07-21 Thread Ian Cowley

If you're on an NT domain, and you're an administrator, you can connect
to the servcies on the remote computer and restart the VNC server
service.

Or remotely reboot the computer (if it's not a vital system), using one
of the resourse kit tools (Remote Shutdown, I think it's called), and on
reboot, VNC should restrat (assuming you've got it installed as a
service)

Hope that helps.

RE: Silent Installation of WinVNC problem...

2001-09-10 Thread Ian Cowley

Hmm, the way I discovered of doing it ran thusly:

Use rsetup from the NT4 Server Resourse kit to remotely install Rconsole
on the target machine.
Run rconsole - this runs a silent dos prompt on the target machinbe, and
you can specify to do It with admin rights
Inside said dos prompt, run a batch file with the following:
Copy files (exe, dll, directory structure insode \program files)
from a shared server folder somewhere
run regedit /s vnc.reg (where vnc.reg is an exported .reg of the
settings from a clean machine with VNC setup as preferred - this
includes the password setting :)
run winvnc -install

Because it all runs as administraor on the target machine, no rights
issues incur.

Only works on a domain, but is brilliant, 'cos it's all totally remote.

I used it to install VNC(fully configured) on a machine that I had never
even seen, 200 miels away in one of our other offices, across the
company WAN.

I can probab;ly remmeber details of the batch fiels if pressed

Have discovered that pressing the apple button and 3 together sends a right-button

3.3.8 for Windows

2000-12-18 Thread Ian Cowley

Have only just returned to work after an extended absence (since Sptember),
so have been unable to read the mailing list since then - please forgive me

Over the summer I read somewhere that VNC 3.3.8 for Win32 was being released
"in 4 weeks' time".
It doesn't appear to have been released yet - when is the intended release
date?

RE: VNC Noise

2000-12-20 Thread Ian Cowley

We have developed an automatic method for deploying VNC over a network that
is totally invisible at the user's/machine's end, and takes a mere 17
seconds per machine.

If you're using a Windows NT network/domain, I'll be happy to share our
secrets. As far as I know, it will only work on an NT (or possibly win2000)
domain.

RE: VNC Noise

2000-12-20 Thread Ian Cowley

OK, here is the much-desired method that I developed for a silent network
install of VNC:

Install VNC on a test machine, and set it up with the right refesh
properties and password that you want. You also need to set up any
AuthHosts properties or the disabling of the 'Close VNC' and 'Properties'
menu options on the system tray icon (documentation available on VNC
website).
Then export the registry entries to .reg files (we had three, from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_CURRENT_USER and HKEY_USERS/.DEFAULT).
Export the whole ORL/VNC branch.
Now, all you need to install VNC on any machine is to copy winvnc.exe,
vnchooks.dll to c:\program files\vnc (or wherever) and omnithread_rt.dll to
c;\winnt\system32 and install the .reg files.
I achieved this by the following method:
Use the NT4 Server resource kit command 'rsetup' to set up access to a
remote command prompt on the target machine.
Then use 'rclient' to connect to the remote comamnd prompt (thisa is a
command prompt that is actually running on the target machine, but operates
in the background, so the user sees nothing).
Inside this command prompt, run a batch file that copies the files and runs
the .reg files, then runs 'winvnc -install'.
This copies all the needed files, the settings (in the registry) and then
installs VNC as a service.
At the next reboot, VNC server is running as a service.
the bonus of this method is that there is no start menu entries, and the
viewer is not installed.

when the 'rclient' progam is used, you pass the administartor password to it
(giving a command prompt with admin access on the target machine) and
there's a switch to run a batch file and close.
Hence the whole lot can be automated from a batch file.
All that is needed is the NETBIOS name of the target machine, and if you
have loads of them, the passing of the names to the batch file can be
automated too.
I have included the contents of the batch files below.

Hope this all helps, if you have any more questions feel free to ask :)

--
Ian Cowley
Computer Services Dept.
National Farmers' Union

MAIN BATCH FILE:
please note the 'rclient.\install.bat' is all on one line.
=
@echo off
rsetup \\%1
rclient \\%1 /logon:\administrator \runbatch
install.bat
==

INSTALL.BAT:
==
@echo off
c:
cd \
cd "program files"

cd orl
md vnc
cd vnc
copy \\server\share\winvnc.exe c:

regedit /s \\server\share\1.reg
regedit /s \\server\share\2.reg
regedit /s \\server\share\3.reg
winvnc -install

This process is invisible at the user's end.
You just need to run "main_batch " e.g. "main_batch PC205"

Then use 'rclient' to connect to the remote comamnd prompt (thisa is a
command prompt that is actually running on the target machine, but
operates
in the background, so the user sees nothing).
Inside this command prompt, run a batch file that copies the files and
runs
the .reg files, then runs 'winvnc -install'.
This copies all the needed files, the settings (in the registry) and
then
installs VNC as a service.
At the next reboot, VNC server is running as a service.
the bonus of this method is that there is no start menu entries, and the
viewer is not installed.

when the 'rclient' progam is used, you pass the administartor password
to it
(giving a command prompt with admin access on the target machine) and
there's a switch to run a batch file and close.

Have you heard of the Computer Misuse Act, Privacy (under European Human
Rights) or the Data Protection Act?
I think that tall three of these apply when it comes to what system admins
can and can't look at on a system.
That is why the icon is there (apart from to provide decent functionality).
Can you imagine the implications if system admins were allowed to spy on
users at will without any sort of safeguards? I'm sure your personnel
department wouldn't be too happy if they were typing confidential documents
about employees if they knew they could be spied on.

IMHO I think that the icon should stay and that any versions that have been
recompiled to remove the icon should be condemned by ATT. I'm sure they
wouldn't want the backlash if a spying case ever made it to court...

If you read the documentation, there's a registry setting (I think it's
called AllowProperties) you can set at the server end to disable (grey out)
the Properties option in the right-click menu on the VNC system tray icon.
You can also grey out the "Close VNC" menu item.

How about running the DOS viewer on the WFW3.11 machine to view one of the

RE: VNC questions

2001-01-03 Thread Ian Cowley

The VNC server and viewer support multiple viewers, via the 'Shared
Connection' option.
This can be set when connecting a viewer (in the option, 'Request a shared
session').
As for security, the AuthHosts setting in the registry (check the
documentation) can be used to limit connection based on the viewer's IP
address.
IP ranges can be set to be auto-accept or auto-reject.
I suggest looking at the documentation page
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/winvnc.html for registry settings
available.

RE: Kill Clients

Is there a registry setting to disable the "Kill sll clients" option when

There are settings to disable "Close VNC" and "properties"

I too would be very interested to know if there is a setting for this - I
can't find rerference in the documentation or FAQ.

RE: VNC connection

2001-01-05 Thread Ian Cowley

You'll be able to use VNC as long as you know the IP address of the target
machine, and as long as it's not behind some weird firewall at your ISP.

Hover the mouse over the VNC Server system tray icon, get the IP from the
tooltip that pops up, and you should be away.

Next version???

It has yet to appear, and I am wondering when (if ever) it will be released.

RE: remote installation of vnc servers

2001-03-04 Thread Ian Cowley

The basic thing is to copy the VNC files and settings to the target
computer, rather than going through the setup process - these have the same
effect.
So first of all, install VNC on a clean computer, reboot a couple of times
to make sure all the settings are staying put (I seem to remember sometimes
the password doesn't hold on the first reboot).
Then export the VNC subtrees from the registry.
I believe there are three, in HKEY_CuRRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT.
Export them to three .reg files is easiest.

Now all you have to do is copy the c:\program files\vnc directory and
c:\winnt\system32\omnithread_rt.dll to the target machine and import the
registry settings.

This is done with the NT Server Resource kit tools rsetup and rclient.
Rclient allows you to tuin a command prompt on a remote machine as if you
were actually at that machine - the comamnd prompt runs in the background on
the remote machine and doesn't affect the user currently on it.

rsetup must be used to setup the remote command prompt service.
Then rclient can be used to connect.
You'll have to look up the details of the two commands, as I have forgotten
and don't have access to an NT4 resource kit.
The rclient should be run with the batch command switch on, and get it to
run the following batch file:

cd c:\program files
md vnc
copy \\server\vncshare\winvnc.exe c:\program files\vnc
copy \\server\vncshare\vnchooks.dll c:\program files\vnc
copy \\server\vncshare\omnithread_rt.dll c:\winnt\system32
regedit /s \\server\vncshare\vnc1.reg
regedit /s \\server\vncshare\vnc2.reg
regedit /s \\server\vncshare\vnc3.reg
winvnc -install

This will copy the relevant files, install the registry settings and then
install VNS as a service.

If you write a batch file to execute the rclient command, then you can pass
a list of computer NETBIOS names to it (these are used in the rclient
command) to automate the installation across aall 400 machines.

Hope this helps.

We need to know which OS you're using it on, which version of VNC you're
running and the circumstances under which you installed it - a service or an
application?

It's because VNC only uses the first 8 characters of the password

MAJOR bug with 3.3.3r9 on Windows XP

2001-05-21 Thread Ian Cowley

If someone tries to connect to my VNC server running on Windows XP (Beta
2), and fail, my wallpaper is removed.

Which is a bit annoying, as my friends now know this and so periodically
attempt to connect to my machine in order to removemy wallpaper for me.

All my friends are running Win2000 3.3.3r9, and me trying the same trick
on them doesn't do anything, so I assume it's an XP issue.

Please note the presence of the phrase "and fail" in my original

The wallpaper should not be removed if the connection fails (i.e. if the
person attempting to connect gets the password wrong)

Well I am using a normal desktop, with the vortec space image.
This is a JPG, but I believe windows converts it to a BMP before using
it, so it's not using the Active Desktop.

Yup.
Tried it with normal bitmaps and JPGs.

Disappears both times.
None of my friends (thay all have 98 or 2000) can duplicate this 'bug'.

Successful connections work OK.
The wallpaper disappears on connection and reappears on disconnection.
I tried both the "kill all clients" from the server end (here), and
getting the connecting end (a win2000 machine) to close its connection -
bot hways work fien.
So it's only failed connections that cause problems.

RE: Windows 2000 fun

2001-05-22 Thread Ian Cowley

It sounds like you're describing the "This computer is locked, press
CTRL-ALT-DEL to unlock" screen, rather than the login screen.
As far as I know, there's no way to get the authorization box to come up
when the computer is in this state, as it's supposed to be one of the
most secure modes the computer can be in.
