Connection Problem of VNC 3.3.3R2

2001-08-14 Thread HATTORI,SHIGEMI (Non-HP-Japan,ex6)
Dear Developers & Users  of VNC;

We are doing remote maintenance for a website by using VNC3.3.3R2.
It launched four months ago, and used to work very well. But recently we
have phenomena as below. Since it happens irregularly and not so often, we
cannot grasp the reason for it.
We hope that you have some good ideas. If possible, we want to get your
advice.

Phenomena
When we try to connect to one of server from a client, the message "Fail to
connect server" being shown in window, so we cannot connect.
Up to the time when we have this message, it worked well. But after that, it
does not work even if we try many times.
All the services except this software always seem to work well.
VNC is registered on Windows2000 services. The service condition of VNC when
the phenomena happened was "working". There was no event log on Win2000
about it.

Now we have two countermeasures for these phenomena.
A.
($B#1(J) Stop VNC Service
$B!J#2!K(JExecute "remove WinVNC Service" and uninstall
$B!J#3!K(JRe-register VNC on Service of Windows2000 and restart.

B.
$B!J#1!K(JCannot stop VNC service
$B!J#2!K(JStop VNC service with kill tool of Windows2000.
$B!J#3!K(JExecute "remove WinVNC Service" and uninstall
$B!J#4!K(JRe-register VNC on Service of Windows2000 and restart.

We want to know why the VNC service will not stop.

(Our environment is as below.
The Server's OS is Windows 2000 advanced server with SP1.
The Clients' OS are Windows2000, Windows98 or WindowsNT.
A dedicated line is used for this Remote Maintenance.)

Sincerely yours.

RE: VNC krasches Delphi apps on server

2001-08-14 Thread H. Th. van der Meer

Hello Dimitri,

I've also looked at this problem more than once.
Recently I've bought a Delphi package that put me on a trial that might lead
to a fix. This package is used to build windows services with Delphi. It put
a lot of time in finding a problem that relates to interactive services.
It turns out that the table that windows uses to store atoms is destroyed
when the user logs off. The could lead to the following:

1) vnc is started and creates an atom
2) the user does something and logs off
3) windows deletes the atom table
4) a user logs on again
5) a Delphi application is started
6) the Delphi window is hidden
7) when a window hides vnc removes the prop.
   But it's the wrong one!

This will happen when delphi gets de atom that vnc used and thus is
sensitive to coincidence. But it looks like this is a general winvnc
problem.

For some more information see article Q238721 in the Microsoft knowledge
base. They had a similar problem for common controls and MFC.

I know this isn't a fix, but I need more time to follow this and could use
some help at it.

Cheers,

Henk van der Meer

This weird interaction with the Drag Manager is a known problem in my

Re: Win32 VNC service Shutdown

2001-08-14 Thread Tony Caduto

Hi Mike,
Sure we could do that, but that would be a big pain our network admins don't
want to add that level of complexity.
If it was just for me it would not be a problem.
The point is this should be fairly easy for the VNC developers to fix, and
it seems that the problem has been known for quite some time but has yet to
be resolved.

RE: Win32 VNC service Shutdown

2001-08-14 Thread David Brodbeck

While I agree with you in principle, I think that incorporating a
work-around, as PC Anywhere apparently has done, would be pretty helpful.
It's not like VNC servers for other platforms don't incorporate code to work
around their particular quirks. This would introduce no incompatibilities
so I don't see the harm in it.

Zebedee-enabled Java VNC viewer available

2001-08-14 Thread Neil Winton

I probably should have announced this here before, but
if you are using Zebedee with VNC you might be
interested in a Zebedee-enabled version of the Java
VNC viewer. Yes, this only requires JDK1.1 and should
work on a Mac!

This is an offshoot of my reimplementation of Zebedee
in Java. The Zebedee/VNC integration I have done is
very simplistic -- there's no control panel to alter
the Zebedee options so you just get Zlib level 6
compression and 128-bit Blowfish encryption. If
someone want to do the GUI additions that would be
great.

It's on Sourceforge. Head to:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/zebedee

and go for the vnc-jzbd download. There's a source
archive and a prebuilt, read-to-go vncviewer.jar.

Regards,
Neil

RE: VNC krasches Delphi apps on server (2)

2001-08-14 Thread H. Th. van der Meer

Hello Dimitri,

I added some steps in the scenario as I expect the things go:

1) vnc is started and creates an atom
2) the user does something and logs off
3) windows deletes the atom table
4) a user logs on again
5) a Delphi application is started
6) the Delphi window is hidden
7) when a window hides vnc removes the prop (X,Y coordinate)
   But it's the wrong one!
8) the Delphi window re-appears
9) VNC adds it's prop with it's global atom (that isn't valid any more)
10) Delphi uses it's global atom to get the handle to it's data, but it gets
the handle to the VNC data.

Cheers,

disable http/java on winvnc?

2001-08-14 Thread Glenn Mabbutt

Is there a way to disable the java/http stuff on the winvnc server on
startup?? There doesn't seem to be a command-line option readily visible to
do it (and /nojava or /nohttp do nothing). I'm not using it and I'm looking
for ways to make winvnc launch a bit faster.

I'm using Const's TightVNC pre-8 release, but I think the principle applies
to vanilla winvnc as well.

Thanks,

Re: Win32 VNC service Shutdown

2001-08-14 Thread Tony Caduto

Hi Steve,
The problem is with the way the developers implemented the VNC win32
service, the service responds to the same shutdown message as winvnc as a
app does.
A service should only shut down when the NT service manager tells it to.
Services should shut down after regular apps do.
So the problem is with the way VNC was implemented as a win32 service, and
fixing it has nothing to do with the versions for other platforms.
It really needs to be addressed if VNC is to be taken seriously by larger IT
departments.

I would like to hear from some of the VNC developers on this issue.

Re: Win32 VNC service Shutdown

2001-08-14 Thread Tony Caduto

Hi David,
You are right it would not introduce any incompatibilities because only the
implementation of the service code would have to be modified.

Do the VNC developers take part in this list?
I program in Pascal and my C++ is very rusty, otherwise I would attempt it
myself :-)

Hi,
Would anyone be interested in a VNC viewer that worked similar to PC
Anywhere?
IE where you could create and edit connections in a window and store the

I have been working on such a program and will be releasing it for free

See the attached zip file for a screen shot.

the program uses VNCX activex control by Thong Nyguen from New Zealand.

Feed back would be appreciated.
I can also send a beta version to anyone that is interested, just let me

Re: TightVNC

It is true, I have asked the same question before. But the reply I got was that if you
are using a LAN connection, then tightvnc is not going to help a lot, in fact it will
be slower. But if you are on a modem, then tightvnc is better. Normal vnc with
HEXTILE coding is better for LAN, this is what I have found out.

VNCviewer and multiple NICs (which IP would vnc viewer pick?)

2001-08-14 Thread Michael Rybarski

Hi,

I can connect to a remote PC but VNCviewer does not show feedback/graphics.
Here's my setup:

my [PC1] with 192.168.10.43/24 (NIC) and 192.168.31.210/24 (PPTP VPN dialup)
starts VNCwiewer and connects to [PC2] 192.168.31.240/24 through an dialup
PPTP connection to 192.168.31.0/24 network.

For the VNC to work:

1.Should PC2 know return route to 192.168.10.43? In other words when VNC
viewer initiates connection to 192.168.31.240 would it bind to
192.168.31.210 or 192.168.31.43 adapter???

TIA
