making a tunnel for VNC
Hello all, i'm pretty new at the whole routing and networking thing.. I recently set up a Cayman 3220 DSL router and i'm trying to make a tunnel so that i can connect to vnc and administer the Server from home. But i've been trying to make this thing work and it doesn't seem to come through.. i made an external port 58 to connect to the internal 5800 port on the VNC server. it partly seems to work. when i try and connect to it through Netscape it says the applet is running...but nothing shows up. Anyone have any clue on how i can fix this? ~Harrison - To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list to [EMAIL PROTECTED] See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html -

Re: making a tunnel for VNC
I believe you need port 5900 to be forwarded from the server to the client as well as from the client to the server. (Assuming you are using screen 0, as it appears you are, being as 5800 partially works). - Dino Harrison wrote: > Hello all, i'm pretty new at the whole routing and networking thing.. > I recently set up a Cayman 3220 DSL router and i'm trying to make a > tunnel so that i can connect to vnc and administer the Server from home. > But i've been trying to make this thing work and it doesn't seem to come > through.. i made an external port 58 to connect to the internal 5800 > port on the VNC server. it partly seems to work. when i try and connect > to it through Netscape it says the applet is running...but nothing shows > up. > > Anyone have any clue on how i can fix this? > > ~Harrison > - > To unsubscribe, send a message with the line: unsubscribe vnc-list > to [EMAIL PROTECTED] > See also: http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html > - _ Do You Yahoo!? Timeout on Session Start-up
New Thread.. I'm new to the thread so I hope that I haven't missed the answer to my question in searching the archives. But so far I've found nothing. I'm running VNC on Windows Server 2000 and normally it runs fine. But something is happening from time-to-time that is preventing me from launching VNC Viewer. I'll log out of the session and then later when I go to log in again I enter the IP and it queues me for the password. I enter the password and NOTHING.. Then five minutes later the viewer crashes and I have to end task the bugger. This happens from any machine I try with VNC viewer, so I know it's not my reader. I'm running the VNC service on the Server so that I have complete ability to log-on and off of the admin account. Anyone had a similar experience? Problem with VPN & Windows 2000
>From home, I used to be able to create a VPN connection to my office firewall. From there I am able to VNC to every computer I have set up. Now I have one problem. On my computer, Windows 2000, I am unable to VNC to it thru the VPN. I am able to connect from any other workstation. I can even VPN, VNC to another computer, and from that computer VNC to my Win 2000 computer. I believe this started when I put SP2 on my Windows 2000 computer. Killing the server on Windows 98
Hi, I've done two installs on Windows 98 and I've noticed that on both ocassions, server icon does not show up on the system tray. So I try to find the application by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL, but there's no obvious sign of the application. The install was done by running the setup program and then installing the default registry settings. Then I run VNC as an app. At this point, I would expect a new icon to appear in the system tray (works in win2k, but not win98). Questions: 1.How can I make the icon appear on the system tray? 2.If there is no system tray, how do I kill the server so that people cannot attempt to access the computer? You will not get an icon under Win9x unless you have logged in with a username (i.e. not just the normal login-as-nobody login). This usually requires you to set Win9x to support separate user profiles, at least. There is no such thing as a service under win9x. "Services" on this platform are simply processes that stay alive across logins, so they should show up in the task list if they are running. VNC with KDE 2 and JBuilder
I just upgraded on our Redhat 6.2 system from KDE 1.x to KDE 2.1. Initially VNC access didn't work at all but after scanning the list I found the tip of starting vncserver with -depth 16 and the problem appeared to be solved. However, I then found out that JBuilder had stopped working under VNC, ie. the display shows only a window with a black background. Again looking through this list I found a someone saying that Java seems to require the standard depth of 8. Has anyone found a solution for this dilemma: KDE won't work with -depth 8 and JBuilder won't work with - deph 16. So how can I run JBuilder within KDE accessed through VNC? Manuel PS: If you wonder why I upgraded to KDE 2.1 when everything was working fine before: A customer came to us asking for support of an application developed under Kdevelop 1.4 which in turn requires KDE 2.x. There is also an option in recent versions of WinVNC to display a confirmation dialogue box, although this option is more suited to a tech-support role than for monitoring. RE: VNC with KDE 2 and JBuilder
Just saw another e-mail regarding vnc and kde which recommended using 24 bit depth and surprise surprise now Java works. So in summary: KDE 2.x works with depth 16 or depth 24. Java GUI apps (I am using JDK 1.3.x here with Swing) appear to require depth 8 or depth 24. So the common denominator is depth 24. All this is with vncviewer running under Windows NT. BTW, vnc (server and viewer) are great applications. Why aren't all apps so simple to install and run? It's a > good idea to disable the pop-up menu as a first step to prevent users from > disabling VNC, and put an "anti-disabling" clause in the same policy if you > feel this is necessary. I'm *guessing* the same thing. I'm going to be researching properly in the next few days, I just haven't had time yet. At the moment, we've simply failed to load the -servicehelper portion in the startup, thereby hiding the icon simply by not loading it. No effort has been made to disable the configuration options, or stop the user from loading WinVNC themselves, with -servicehelper, and making changes. There is a standard "We can record everything you do on our equipment and/or network" but nothing about disabling such methods. The specific clause inplies network monitoring, but doesn't exclude machine specific monitoring. > >Do they have to be notified when someone is actively monitoring? > > See above - I'd at least leave the "tray icon" or other symbol visible, > which changes colour to denote a connected viewer. I doubt that will change, since they just deployed new machine imagines network wide. Given that there is officially no monitoring software, I think view-only is a good idea :) > In general, I'd err on the side of openness. I would tend to agree. Especially with people like me, who know exactly what to look for to see if a system is being monitored, passively or actively. Good 'ol NT/W2K, a task list does wonders, 'eh? And the open ports are just a WEE bit suspicious too. I'm an employee, not in the MIS department, and the only member of MIS I've had time to ask so far denied that any monitoring is happening at all. Maybe he didn't know, or maybe he lied, I'm not sure. But since I was able to get into the config, and I can tell that the service is running, I'm going to assume they are monitoring us.
