Re: Why does VNC 3.3.7 on Solaris do one thing and 4.1.3 on Linux not do that?

I have here two systems. One is a Solaris 10 from March 2005
installation on an UltraSPARC 5(10) system, and the other is a
Slackware-12.1.0 system on Intel.

The Solaris one is running 3.3.7 that was packaged by themselves (Sun)
and can present me with both an xterm screen and an rxvt terminal
screen. The Slackware-12.1 system is running 4.1.3 that was collected
from the RealVNC site sometime ago, and was translated from the
delivered rpm file.

Both present me with the default twm screen manager and an xterm upon
launching the viewer. This viewer always works no matter if its
running on Windows Seven or Linux or Solaris.

However I only get the necessary rxvt terminal on Solaris and 3.3.7.
It causes VNC to complain regarding colors that it does not know about
certain colors and causes a failed error code of -5 on 4.1.3 on
Slackware-12.1. Incidentally this Linux system is wearing the XORG
release common to Slackware from that time period. I believe it was
6.5.

However running 4.1.3 of VNC on a Slackware-11.0 system causes
everything to work properly. It has been suggested that the problem
might be inherent to X instead of VNC but I am open to suggestions
from the community.

As far as I know the above setup, the vnc-server is a script that starts
the binary `Xvnc`. This is a genuine X-11 server, that can be configured
as any other X11 server. Hence, walk your way trough the vnc-server
script and see what options are used at the Xvnc binary.

Also keep in mind that Xvnc 3.x implements an older version of X11 than
Xvnc 4.x. And in the end, the Xvnc binary you are using can be compiled
to use less resources or to provide more features.

Re: Have to move browser windows to refresh inside them?

Hi
Hopefully someone can assist me. In the earlier version of RealVNC (paid 3
licence) everything worked AOK.

You payed for support, get it!

Once you got it, be nice to answer here with the found solution... (or
the message that support sucks ;-)

But now (not sure since which update) - if I do something that causes an
update on a page, eg a browser changes pages etc, then the inside of the remote
window doesn't refresh. If I grab that remote windows title bar and drag the
window a little way (ie move the window), then the inside of it updates.

All systems are running XP or XP64.

With the remote system being msWindows, do have a look at the server
settings. (right mouse button on the icon next to the clock). There find
the polling settings and twiggle with them: msWindows based vnc-server
most times use a polling mechanism and only send updates as they are found.

Maybe the viewer has also some update/refresh options, see the vncviewer
menu (right mouse button on the title bar) for details.
