Viewer disconnection
This morning I needed to perform some remote administration on a Windows 2000 machine running VNC server 4.2.6 across our internal LAN. As things did not seem to be behaving properly, I initiated a reboot of the machine using the start menu: Hit the Start button, select Shut Down, and then Restart in the dialog which pops up. At that point the VNC session immediately closed (or I guess was forced to close, given what I did) The machine appears have rebooted normally, but when I try to connect to it again I get asked for the password and then a dialog appears titled "VNC Viewer: : Question" The message is "The connection closed unexpectedly. Do you wish to attempt to reconnect to ?" I can connect to another machine at the site concerned, and access the event log remotely. This shows a normal authentication, and then another event with the message "Connections:disconnected: :1135 (unable to open input desktop)". The event ID is 1 (although this appears to be true for all RealVNC events...) and just appears with a blue "Information" icon rather than a warning or error icon. I am attempting to connect as a default user using the 128 bit AES encryption option. Nothing at either end (viewer or server) or on the network has changed. I have searched the list archive for any clues as to what might be causing this without success - is anyone able to help? I apologise if this comes through as HTML formatted text but as the server concerned hosts our company email systems I have had to use a webmail system to post to the list Richard Jebb Technical Director PCF Ltd ___ VNC-List mailing list VNC-List@realvnc.com To remove yourself from the list visit: http://www.realvnc.com/mailman/listinfo/vnc-list

Is there any fix on the horizon for this issue? The website hints that it *might* be fixed in EE, but other documents suggest it still isn't. A heads up on new worm affecting previous versions of RealVNC
Hiyas, Just had to clean up this new worm from an infected pc. Apparently the vector was through an um-updated VNC on a friend's pc. Just another reason to update and patch. http://www.us.sophos.com/security/analyses/w32rbotgai.html From the writeup on the worm at Sophos: W32/Rbot-GAI spreads to other network computers by exploiting common buffer overflow vulnerabilities, including: LSASS (MS04-011), SRVSVC (MS06-040), RPC-DCOM (MS04-012), ASN.1 (MS04-007) and RealVNC (CVE-2006-2369). Otherwise, it is a great product! Diana ps Yes, I told him to update it and even sent him the link to do it, but some people never learn... When will there be a version of the free RealVNC that will automatically start at bootup in Windows Vista like it did in XP? hello Here is my answer to the asked question: my 2 PC's are connected via a DSL link. If you happened to know this, the DSL boxes are Free boxes; at one end, there is a router. Norton Internet Security blocks RealVNC
It appears that NIS is blocking RealVNC. I am using version 4.1.2. Is it possible that a recent update to NIS added full RealVNC blocking due to the 4.1.1 security hole? http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/security/Content/2006.06.19.html I have not been able to get traffic to pass even though I have added port 5900 to NIS and propagated it to the top of the list. I have seen this in both NIS 2005 and NIS 2006 versions. The only other reference that I have seen on this forum does not apply (although I suspect is the real culprit): http://realvnc.com/pipermail/vnc-list/2004-March/044312.html Has anyone out there experienced this? Error code listing
Does anyone know if there is a list of error codes and their meaning? It seems if they are going to use error codes, there would be a key to go along with it. Which end, server or client? If it is on the server you must set up port forwarding so that connections to the router on the port in question (typically inbound connections to port 5900, 5600 and or 5500 depending on what type of VNC connection you are trying to achieve) are forwarded to the LAN IP address of the VNC server machine. It is a good idea to allow incoming connections only from the IP of the client machine, if the server configuration menu offers this option. > On one side, the Fireawall is WinXP's, and ZoneAlarm on the other side. The server software firewall will need to be configured to allow incoming connections from the client on the respective port (as above). ZoneAlarm may try to block outbound connections from the client (if ZoneAlarm is installed on the client machine). Make sure you click to allow the VNC viewer to connect to the Internet if/when ZoneAlarm pops up trying to be clever. > Hope this help. RealVNC quits on connect...
Should be an easy one: I've got a VNC server running on my iMac 1920x900 screen (OSX Vine). I'm on XP with RealVNC Client. (1400x1024 something) Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't... When it doesn't, the Remote Control window flashes up, then disappears, no error message. What's going on? Why is it quitting? Is there a log to tell me?
