[vchkpw] Vpopmail Issues

2002-09-18 Thread marine yin

Hi:
I am so thankful to your Vpopmail, it is great.
But after the installation and configuration with the guide of
VpopInstallGuide, I can't let the roaming user to use my qmail-smtp service
to relay.

The following are the background of it.

OS Kernel version: Linux 2.2.14-5.0
Vpopmail Version: 5.2.1
qmail version: 1.03
Start script of qmail smtp and pop3:

/usr/local/bin/tcpserver -x /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb -D -H -R -u
504 -g 504 0 smtp /var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd 2>&1 | /var/qmail/bin/splogger
smtpd 3 &

/usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R 0 pop-3
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup welcome /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir &

My steps for compiling the Vpopmail (they are the commands I typed in the
console)
1. ./configure --enable-roaming-users=y

2. make

3.make install-strip

4./home/vpopmail/bin/vadddomain virtualdomain.com

5. /home/vpopmail/bin/vadduser [EMAIL PROTECTED] password

Then I configure the MUA (Outlook Express 6) with the new account. Then I can
use it to receive the mail sent to the [EMAIL PROTECTED], but I can't
send any E-mail with it.

I am so puzzled!!! Please Help!!!

Best
Regards!

[vchkpw] rcpthosts

2002-09-18 Thread Till Klampaeckel

Hey,
I have a question regarding rcpthosts. I'm using Qmail with Vpopmail.

I put my domain, "domain.com" in there, also put it into "locals". Whenever
I try to send an email it says that the recipient ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) was
denied, cause it's not in rcpthosts. Maybe I got the whole concept wrong.
When I allow everything in rcpthosts (wildcard-like) it's just like an open
relay, which is not acceptable due to spammers. :-/

Appreciate any help,
Till

Are you using qmail-scanner or any other program with a patched qmail
(QMAILQUEUE patch)? Make sure the program you set with ENV-variable
'QMAILQUEUE' is executable and does not crash.

I'm going to have to with Steve here. I've been on this list for a while
and the signal-to-noise ratio is horrendous. Is there a charter for this
list? Without a charter it is hard to say what does and doesn't belong on
the list.

I would fathom that all the items Steve mentioned above do not belong on the
list. Too bad the majority of the mail generated by the list falls into
those categories.

File: FAQ
Location: directory of extracted vpopmail sources.
Content:
4. How do I allow roaming users to use our smtp server without opening
the machine up to everyone on the internet?

Your startup script for the qmail smtp server must use the
tcpserver -x file command similar to this startup line.

env - PATH="/var/qmail/bin:/usr/local/bin" \
tcpserver -H -R -x /path/to/vpopmail/etc/tcp.smtp.cdb \

So how about exchanging '-x /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb' with
'-x /path/to/vpopmail/etc/tcp.smtp.cdb' ???

Hi,

You can make sure the 'tcpserver' process, running the POP3-daemon
accepts connections from "not localhost". Maybe you want to have a look
for the '.cdb' file you (for sure, you don't read documentation and
therefore use the default command line) point 'tcpserver' to?

Does it exist?
If not: are you using '-X' (capital 'X') instead of '-x'?
If it does: maybe your 'tcpserver' call makes use of '-r'. '-p' or '-h'?
Or maybe it simply needs '-RH' and no '-p' (as '-r' and '-h' are
default) to not time out?

Maybe you don't even use 'tcpserver' to start the POP3-daemon, but
'inetd'? Make sure 'hosts.allow' allows, or at least 'hosts.deny' does
not deny the connection(s).

Hint: use 'netstat -anp |grep :110' to figure out which listener is used
to start you POP3-daemon. Make sure THIS listener allows the
connection(s).

May be a DNS problem? Another thing to check is the tcpserver -x option
blocking the connecting host.

[vchkpw] HUGE pop3 bottleneck

2002-09-18 Thread Justin R. Miller

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

I have just located a large source of problems with our installation.
We average about 500 POP3 logins per minute and we had roaming users
enabled. It seems that writing to the /usr/local/vpopmail/etc/open-smtp
file was a large bottleneck since so many logins were attempting to
write to the same file. Users would get "file busy" errors while
successful logins, when they happened, would take upwards of a minute.
Failures would happen instantly, since the file was not written to.

Has anyone found an alternate solution to this? I now use authenticated
SMTP only for this installation. Perhaps a directory of entries instead
of a file, or some kind of file-based DB? Any ideas? We'd like to keep
this feature, but with so many users, this seems to be the only system
bottleneck on this system (about 13,000 domains).

There's a patch that has it run queries against a MySQL database instead of
constantly rebuilding the cdb file. I don't remember where it is offhand,

This would all be fine and dandy - if your construct were correct. I draw
your attention to the word "insist" before your bullet points

I understand where you are coming from with your rant, but I also believe

RE: [vchkpw] qmail-inject Error

2002-09-18 Thread Clayton Weise

I agree on both points. I feel that these mailing lists should be for the
odd problems that can't be solved by doing a simple search on google, or
reading through the archives. But not everyone takes things that far.

As for the rest of it.. It bothers me when I see so much ignorance out there
about these things, or lack of drive to learn. But the fact that somebody
posts to the list shows that they have some drive to figure these things
out. I would reccomend to anybody that posts on the list to first search
for your error on your favorite search engine and check the vpopmail
archives BEFORE posting to the list. Chances are, somebody else already had
your problem and learned how to fix it. Those of us that have been on this
list for a while get sick of hearing the same cries over and over for the
same things that have been answered probably hundreds of times.

When I was a novice at this stuff, I worked at a relativley large ISP.
Everyone in my department feared going into the "engineer" room because we
knew they'd chew our heads off and call us an idiot after solving our
problem. I think it's great that people feel comfortable enough to post to
this list without the fear of being flamed. You've gotta learn somehow, and
I'll agree that it's usually much easier to learn interactivley from a
person than reading a book. But please, I urge everyone who ever posts to
any type of list to research your questions before posting. Usually you can
find your answers quicker than you could waiting around for an email. And
if you write the list, don't tell us how urgent you problem is and how we
HAVE to fix it for you. The people that subscribe to these postings do it
free of charge and out of the kindness in their own hearts. Don't insult us
by telling us to do your job ;), if you want support that quickly then pay
for it.

Paul,

Please refrain from top posting. It makes quoting your email in context
very difficult when replying. It is also very difficult to follow which
points your email responded to specifically.

Yet people write email after email to technical mailing lists asking for
just that type of handholding. There's a reason why people are
constantly told to RTFM, it's because in so many cases it is dreadfully
obvious that they haven't.

I disagree. It is incumbent upon the person asking for help on a free
mailing list to actually show that they've gone to some length to find
an answer on their own. Not making an effort before asking for help
abuses both the time and bandwidth of those who do make an effort as
well as those who offer support. To boot, there are a number of
applications, especially internet connected, that if a person cannot
show the slightest inclination to help themselves, they should not be
running in the first place.

Possibly because if they had read the INSTALL before installing as they
were supposed to do, the answer would have been obvious. Since you bring
up the Sqwebmail list, of which I'm also a member, how many times have
you seen in the last month alone people asking about the "Invalid User
ID or Password" issue that relates to having vpopmail installed? It
gets asked over and over because people refuse to do some research
beforehand. Spoonfeeding people is not helping the situation.

Newbies are by definition ignorant. That's why they are newbies. It is
possible to ask a newbie question that won't be universally flamed by
the gurus. But in order to do that, one must show that they made some
kind of effort to understand what's going on.

There are also so many questions that come up so often that a FAQ is
sorely needed. Then the flaming would be easier. Reply to a 6 page email
with a pointer to the FAQ. :)

You also have to remember that even someone who knows what they are doing
for the most part can get horribly lost if they jump in and try to learn
qmail/vpopmail/courier-imap/sqwebmail all at the same time...

Hi,

[vchkpw] new php module

2002-09-18 Thread Justin Heesemann

Hi..
since I'm writing a new vpopmail extension for php without the bugs with
valiases and aliasdomains, I'm looking for people to test it, before posting
it to the php guys.

Anyone interested ?
This version will be compatible to the existing one, so no changes in your php
code are required.

There is an FAQ. Granted, it could probably use and update as well as
being setup so that clicking on the question takes you to the answer,
but it's still better than nothing.

It can be found at:

http://www.inter7.com/vpopmail/FAQ

As one who just recently (maybe half a year ago) jumped in and began the
process of learning all of these applications, I agree. The key is
research, research, research. Putting together a publicly accessible
email server (ie. not purely for internal use and without an internet
connection) is not a task that is to be taken lightly. There are so
many good references available to help you along, most notable "The
qmail Handbook" by Dave Sill, that asking for help right from the start
without having done the most basic of research is rightfully vilified.

Don't know if this is what you are after, but if you are using
courier-imap, you can configure it to delete mail from specified
folders. Have a look at:
   /usr/lib/courier-imap/etc/imapd

If you are interested in doing it over the IMAP protocol, I have a
Python script at codesorcery.net.

If on the filesystem, I don't see any reason why you couldn't do:

find /path/to/Maildir -type f -mtime x | xargs rm -f

where 'x' is the number of days.

I _think_ that will work :-)

Having gotten a chance to look at this, it seems like it requires the
MySQL backend for authentication. I use the vpasswd files. Does anyone

well.. the current working version is only able to add or remove users and to
change their passwords. however it seems _very_ easy adding new functions..
so expect a working one with all you should need by tomorrow.

this first version will probably break with everything older than vpopmail 5.2

4. How do I allow roaming users to use our smtp server without opening

Your startup script for the qmail smtp server must use the

A common error in logging into virtual domains is to forget that your user
name is the whole email addess, i.e [EMAIL PROTECTED] not just bigbob. If
that is not your issue try and post again.

And I too would be curious as to why you choose Qmail 1.02?

Because it is in the FAQ.
The installation guide can't cover all scenarios, therefore a FAQ
exists.
When installing software _all_ README, INSTALL and FAQ files should be
