vchkpw logging total eMails?!
Hi, is there a patch available for vpopmail 5.0 / vchkpw to log, how many eMails the user is downloading, e.g. how many are there for downloading? I've found something on the net, which produces an output like this: Nov 28 13:05:13 daemon qmail-pop3d: user: (null), mails: 3, size: 105598 /mh -- Martin Hasenbein -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] UNIX, a way of life. FreeBSD, my choice of living.

It does just that. Important: see "NOTES" below!! === poplog begin === #!/bin/sh newmail=`ls $PWD/Maildir/new/ | wc -l` newmailbytes=`du -sb $PWD/Maildir/new/ | cut -f 1` oldmail=`ls $PWD/Maildir/cur/ | wc -l` oldmailbytes=`du -sb $PWD/Maildir/cur/ | cut -f 1` USER="Username: `basename $PWD`" pushd .. 1>/dev/null DIR="`basename $PWD`" popd 1>/dev/null echo "$USER@$DIR" "New mails: " "$newmail" "(" "$newmailbytes" " \ Bytes); Old mails: " "$oldmail" " (" "$oldmailbytes" " Bytes)" | \ /var/qmail/bin/splogger pop3d 18 pop="$1"; shift; exec "$pop" "$@" === poplog end === "poplog" is called in my qmail startup script like so: == /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -RHO -v 0 pop3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup \ FQDN /data/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw.log_to_local2 /batches/poplog \ /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir 2>&1 | /var/qmail/bin/splogger \ pop3d 18 & == NOTE! = My pop users were clogging up /var/log/mail, so I hard coded syslog facility "local2" into qmail-vchkpw (saved as "vchkpw.log_to_local2") in the above example, so all pop activity goes to /var/log/pop3. I assume you're using standard logging, so please replace all instances of "18" with "2" for standard "/var/log/mail" logging. ALSO replace FQDN with your own FQDN, of course!! Best regards, Barry

There are no known bugs in vpopmail (besides what Bill found with the vmoduser program). Please do not assume that out of all of the packages you installed that the problem lies with vpopmail. More detailed information, including log file entries would be needed to accurately pin point where your problem lies. Ken Jones

I see your problem. the syntax you are using to add a domain is incorrect. domain-name(x) is not a valid domain name. Hi, The .so and ptn files from Trend are available on their website (www.antivirus.com) free of charge. Re: Roaming Users not working. open-smtp not updated.
I too am having the same problem, and in looking at the permissions I see that open-smtp in ~/vpopmail/etc/ is owned by root and is a 0 byte file ( I suspect because its owned by root). In addition, lastauth in each pop users' directory is also owned by root. Chowning these doesn't make a difference, as they revert back to root (along with any open-smtp.tmp file). What's going on? I am not running imap. I also had the same problem with 4.9.10 I do have the tcp.smtp file in /etc/tcp.smtp and that does update every hour (from the crontab), but I dont see attempts to update that either (probably because open-smtp is unreadable?). qmail-pop3d alternative needed ASAP.
Hi all, I need an alternative POP daemon to use that's compatiable with Vpopmail. This is urgent, so I'd appreciate any feedback on your experiences with what is available.. FYI, I'm having 2 clients with severe POP problems -- basically their POP sessions drop mid way thru downloading mail. Unfortunately its not at one message or one type of message. It seems to be very random. If anyone has experienced this problem, I'd also appreciate some feedback. -- Steve.

I don't know about the problems you're having.. but you can try Sam's pop server. If you install courier-imap, it gets installed. Just make sure it uses only the authvchkpw module, and couriertcpd as -user vpopmail -user vchkpw unless you have domains under multiple /etc/passwd uids. It supports maildirsize, too, so if you happen to use my maildirquota patch with vpopmail, your quota usage will get updated when you delete mail, unlike qmail-pop3d. : ) But you lose vchkpw's logging, which is a drag. Also, it's ready to go for secure pop connections. Regards, Bill Shupp

Re: virus scan features & prices ?
I've been looking at the files you offered. I must be missing some basiic knowledge (or I've skipped too much reading), but I haven't figured out what the .diff files are to be used for. Also, it seems that update.sh does this: 1. GET the new .DEF files from a web site. 2. REMOVE the files just downloaded. 3. UNZIP the files just downloaded. I may be missing something, but shouldn't 2 and 3 be in the opposite order? -- Steve Valliere| [EMAIL PROTECTED] Electronic Visions, Inc. | http://www.e-visions.com 1650 Barrett Drive| Rockledge, FL 32955 | Copyright (C) 2001 by Steven P Valliere All Rights Reserved

I saw this once with an ISP. They traced it down to some networking router configurations. I never found out the details tho. QMAILQUEUE
I am having a problem with qmail-scanner, maybe someone has an idea here. I have installed everything and did ../contrib/test_installation.sh -doit and those tests passed just fine. I can also do this. # QMAILQUEUE=/var/qmail/bin/qmail-scanner-queue.pl # echo "to:root" | /var/qmail/bin/qmail-inject And then I receive a message with the appropriate headers. FYI: I'm not running my maildirquota patch or Sam's pop server in production yet, just for the record. Still testing, making some changes, etc. You might want to do the same before jumping into it... ; ) Also, that maildirquota patch does NOT have the vgetent (cdb) and vmoduser fixes that I posted to the list last week for vpopmail 5.0. I'm planning to post a 2.5 version of the maildirquota patch that will have them in there, maybe later today or tomorrow. Regards, Bill

RE: QMAILQUEUE
A softlimit of 500 or 600 is usually enough. it also depends on what virus scanner you're using as well. the more scanners, the higher the limit. Mine is around 800 because I use two scanners. If you run all your domains under vpopmail/vchkpw, I recommend running your pop server as that user (and couriertcpd if you run imap with roaming users). And just keep open-smtp, tcp.smtp and tcp.smtp.cdb in ~vpopmail/etc, and make sure all those files are owned by vpopmail.vchkpw. Should be as simple as that. Cheers, Bill
more Qmailqueue and virus scan stuff
Recently I posted a question about getting qmailqueue to send mail through a virus scanner and a spam scanner. I found a patch that will do just that, so I thought I'd share it here since there has been a lot of virus talk lately. I am running Sophos Sweep. They have a pretty good deal for ISPs. I think for us it worked out to about $.20 per month. We are more than willing to pay that for the extra service. The auto updates work well. The spam scanner I am using is SpamAssassin found at spamassassin.taint.org. It is very agressive, and we have had a few legitimate emails get blocked, but it is VERY effective on spam. Since Procmail doesn't seem to work well with Vpopmail, we decided to use QMAILQUEUE to run everything through the scanners. This works, but does have the disadvantage that filters are not customizable per user. Here is the patch we used to get it to run the two scanners...it was written by a guy named Kobe Lenjou and posted to the Spamassassin list. Maybe it will be useful to some of you. RE: more Qmailqueue and virus scan stuff
Just as an FYI, I am using this patch on all my mail servers now and it's working fantastically. You do have to do some modifications as his patch was made for the bleeding edge version of spamassassin, plus you have to update the paths and stuff. Just beware of that, but once all that is worked out, it's a great patch, and I'm very happy with it Regards, Tren. > -Original Message- > From: Trey Nolen [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] > Sent: Wednesday, November 28, 2001 11:56 AM > To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] > Subject: more Qmailqueue and virus scan stuff > > > Recently I posted a question about getting qmailqueue to send > mail through a > virus scanner and a spam scanner. Their ISPs routers where overloaded and dropping packets and tcp streams randomly. It was only usually noticable on large downloads, say over 100k. The fix was to wait for off peak hours to relax the load on the routers but in the mean time it was possible to switch them to IMAP retrieval with fetchmail and tell it to only fetch mail of a certain size or smaller. Re: more Qmailqueue and virus scan stuff
Yes, but when you have 1000's of users, that is a LOT of .qmail files to update. Also, changes made in qmailadmin will blow away the part of the .qmail files that pipes it through the spam filter. This was basically the only way that I could find to run a system wide virus and spam filter. The above example is a simple tcpserver script. If you want to use daemontools, you can, but there's not an example of a pop3 run script in the INSTALL file. If you're familiar with daemontools, it's only slightly different that what's above, and you should be able to figure it out. Q-Mail Log
Quick more general Q-Mail question: I at one point had the e-mail log (all e-mail gets delivered to a mailbox) going on a few of my servers. We had to remove it a while ago when some of these became multiuser, but some domains still like that. Is there any sort of script or patch that would log only certail domains- OR is there anything that will log to maybe 'log'@each domain which it is associated with or something along those lines? Thanks! -- Mike
~vpopmail/etc
I see that ./configure already uses ~vpopmail/etc by putting two files, inc_deps and lib_deps there. Are these files necessary for the proper functioning of vpopmail later or they are needed only during the build? The problem I am trying to solve is: I am trying to make an rpm, but with as little impact on the build host as possible. In particular, while I add the vpopmail user, but tried not to create ~vpopmail. But then ./configure complains about the nonexistence of ~vpopmail/etc. Can I just ignore this warning of ./configure, and then have inc_deps and lib_deps created on the install host? RE: qmail-pop3d alternative needed ASAP.
We run a service for approx 2000 clients, most of clients are fetching mails thru POP via standard modem connections. When downloading a huge amount of mails (mostly with big attachemens), randomly a POP session freeze. Repeated POP session for the same account freeze at the same position (for example at 14th mail from 25), while the first 13 mails are repeatedly downloaded. The only way to solve the problem is to clean up the mailbox and delete first 14 messages, there it works fine. The problem shouldn't be somewhere in vpopmail (the same think happened with vpopmail-3.4), now we're using 5.0 with any other problem. Is there a nice replacment form qmail-pop3d? Re: Roaming Users now working.. Probably.
Thanks guys for putting up with me. I finally got it to work. Strange thing: I dont remember starting the service, but before I got my /etc/init.d/qmail script finished it was already working. Maybe someone got tired of listing to me, broke in and fixed it. :) Maybe its related to /service/qmail-pop3d/run or somesuch. Thanks again, -Phil Carinhas -- .. | Dr. Philip A. I too would like to say thanks to Bill & company... Just sitting by the sidelines I figured it out. I hadnt realized that xinetd was the culprit. Thanks again. --Photocon Conrad Hunziker III www.nightskyent.com

If I had time, I'd do some testing, as this would be useful to know for sure. I tend to think it's more of a permissions issue rather than a daemon issue... Doesn't vchkpw do a setuid/setgid before editing these files? I don't recall... Seems like it wouldn't be an issue if this were the case. Regards, Bill
inc_deps and lib_deps
I now see that inc_deps and lib_deps are used by other programs. Are they using them during build or during runtime? Thx Mate -- --- Mate Wierdl | Dept. of Math. Sciences | University of Memphis
Anyone know who made this hosting automation script?
Hello, About a year ago I stumbled across a site while looking for alternatives to the "Homefree" webhosting script. This site had a suite of scripts/tools to automate a hosting company, they had support for vpopmail & sqwebmail built in among other things. But I cant for the life of me remember their url or name. I _think_ it had "hyper" something or "star" something in the domain but not sure. I really would like to see what this company has going these days (if anything). If anyone has a clue to what I'm babbling about here PLEASE let me know :) Thanks! _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
patch to preauthvchkpw.c for open_smtp
Hi, This patch allows open_smtp for pop3, and also checks if NO_RELAY is set for both pop3 and imap. This is useful if you rely on open_smtp to allow users to relay and if you use courier for both pop3 instead of qmail-pop3d, and imap. I have tested this here and it is in production, working as expected. I don't know if I've used diff properly with the file names, but if it does Strange Things or if you know what I should have done, please tell me :-) Cheers! --- preauthvchkpw.c Mon Sep 17 00:49:10 2001 +++ preauthvchkpw.c.new Sun Nov 4 22:29:45 2001 @@ -92,8 +92,23 @@ return(-1); } else { #ifdef HAVE_OPEN_SMTP_RELAY - /* open the relay to imap users */ - open_smtp_relay(); + /* open the relay to imap users only if NO_RELAY is not set */ + if ( ! I have had this problem on 2 different servers, 1 being upgraded and 1 fresh install of the final version of vpopmail 5.0. The problem as described earlier (delivering to the catch-all account) does *NOT* occur when the domain is added with vadddomain , only if you use the -u flag. Can you reproduce this error or not? Now vdelivermail tries to write the file itself, but can't because it's running as the vpopmail user. I'll post a fix once I have one, unless Ken beats me to it. ; ) Bill

This means tcpserver is run as the vpopmail user. How will then vpopmail be able to create, say, /etc/tcp.smtp.cdb? Afterall in most places /etc is not writable by the vpopmail user. roaming users
Suppose my tcprules file for smtpd is in a directory writable only to root and I want roaming users. Do not I have to run a tcpserver-like program that launches imapd or popd as root? Thx Mate -- --- Mate Wierdl | Dept. of Math. Sciences | University of Memphis
Re: Bug in vdelivermail: FIXED
I think I have this fixed. usernotfound() was not properly detecting the "catch-all" argument to vdelivermail for domains not under VPOPMAILDIR *only* when it was a path, so it never appended /Maildir to the user's directory path. Thus, writing the temp file would fail and the message bounced. I wrapped this fix into a general patch of 4 bug fixes for vpopmail 5.0: 1. vegetent() fix (cdb module) - 'vmoduser [flags] ' would corrupt the vpasswd file 2. vmoduser fix (all modules) - wouldn't set the passwd field when running on entire domain 3. re-added .over-quota.msg support to vdelivermail 4. usernotfound() bug described above I also re-added the "user not found but will deliver to " message so you'll see it in the logs. : ) Please help test this patch if you can. To apply: cd vpopmail-5.0 lynx --source http://shupp.org/patches/5.0-shupp-1.patch.gz | patch -p0 ./configure make ; make install And for anyone using the maildirquota patch, I'll try and post an updated version with all these fixes tomorrow. If you only deliver do vpopmail users, put open-smtp and tcp.smtp in ~vpopmail/etc and keep them owned by vpopmail.vchkpw, and all will be well. Regards, Bill Shupp
doc bug
In doc/doc_html/vpopmail.html, I see --enable-relay-clear-minutes=360 expire time for roaming users after pop authentication. If --enable-roamin-users=y is set then this option sets how long clearopensmtp should keep IP's in the list. The default is 3 hours. IMO, 3 hours is 180 minutes not 360. But my confidence is completely shaken when I read, in doc/man_html/clearopensmtp.html The default is 360 minutes or 3 hours. Finally, in the FAQ I see clearopenstmp will ask for a lock, clear out any roaming IP's whos timestamps are over 1 hour old since last pop authentication. ./configure does seem to set this value to 180.
