Using Open Office

2015-01-14 Thread Brian Moore
Good afternoon,

Can anyone point me in the right diction to create some of the attached samples
using open office.
Sorry but I am not the best computer user.
Regards,

Brian Moore

I don't know from which site you are trying to download, but the _ONLY_ site we
recommend is
www.openoffice.org/download
which will redirect to SourceForge servers where the files are stored. Your
download will start automatically in about five seconds, with no need to click
on anything else.

There is no incremental update - the file should be about 146MB.

RE: Trying to update, I have 4.1.0 and I am trying to download 4.1.1

2015-01-14 Thread Dennis E. Hamilton
When you start at and get to the page,
, make sure the settings
there are appropriate for your computer.

After you click "Download full
installation" DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING MORE. There are ads on the next
page that invite your downloading of other software, and they are
confusing. DON'T TOUCH THOSE.

What you want to read is in the fine print near the Apache OpenOffice
symbol and title. If you just wait, the download will start and you
will be asked what to do with it (depending on the browser and computer
you are using). If the download does not just start after a brief time,
follow the barely visible "Problems with the download? ..." message.

The embarrassing icky-ness of the advertising-based download buttons in
various guises is something that we seem unable to explain to the Source-
Forge folks. It is all quite smarmy and an ugly example of the mercantile
spirit that was once confined to matchbook covers and the back pages of
comic books.

unfortunately, this mailing list accepts attachments only if they are in the
open document format (odt, ods etc). you should better upload your files to
some file-sharing server, such as wikisend.com, and provide us with the link to
them.

Page renumber problem

2015-01-14 Thread Dennis B. Jensen
My operating system is Windows 7 & I have open office version 4.1.1

I am writing a book with many appendices that have photos. Page numbers are in
a footer. I have no problem renumbering most of these so the result is
consecutive page numbers from appendix 1 through appendix 60. The problem
occurs with renumbering pages for some of these appendix files of two or more
pages having photos. Each appendix file has a heading which becomes the first
paragraph. I put the cursor in the heading; click format/paragraph/text flow
and change the page number. When I click OK on the files I have a problem
with, the page number changes; BUT the heading moves to the end of the file.
In some cases the first page content is deleted also. So the result is the
heading either at the end of the file, or at the beginning of a blank last
page.

I did get page renumbering to work successfully one one file that previously
gave problems as described above. I changed the spacing between the heading
and the first photo on the page. Then the page renumbering worked
successfully. But this same solution did not work for other files with the
same problem.

This problem also occurs for files on which I previously was successful in
changing the pages. In these cases, I just needed to increase page numbers by
one due to my editing which resulted in one more page. But this next page
renumbering caused the same problem described above.

I would appreciate your advice on how to solve this problem.

DBJensen

P.S. I previously asked this question on December 10, 2014, but did not receive
a reply.

what is the picture ancored to? if it is anchored to page rather than to
paragraph or character, then page number switching could cause something
similar to your problem.

No, you do not need to login at all.

There are no login requirements for downloading Apache
OpenOffice from the official Website.

Make sure you are accessing the OFFICIAL download page for
Apache OpenOffice, at

post card problem

2015-01-14 Thread mountainhollow
Hello, I have been using Openoffice for quite some time now and really like it.
I am suddenly having an issue printing post cards though. I’ve been using the
same format and paper for well over a year but, suddenly my post card print is
half off the card. I contacted my printer support and they informed me that it
was a program issue and not the printer since thing is the only time (printing
post cards) is an issue. I tried uploading the most recent application of
Openoffice as well but, that didn’t clear things up either. when I pull up a
postcard on my program it looks fine but, when I go to “print preview” the
postcard is on the far left of the page and it looks like it’s trying to print
on the left side of a full piece of paper. I tried adjusting the paper
size/dimension but, that didn’t seem to help. Can you tell me what I’ve done
and how to correct this? I print a few hundred postcards a year so this is
pretty important to me.

We can't tell what you have done, you should tell us.
Things you could check are:
The option to print multiple pages on one. This could be set within OpenOfice
and on most printers.
Check page formats especially the margins.
Check the zoom factor.

You should not have to change any setup on the printer. The printer should
print whatever the software sends it. The problem is in
the software. The only limitation on the printer is how close to the edge of
the media it will print, and that will apply to everything
you print. There are even some printers made to print right to the edge, for
photo purposes, but most have limits, which you could
look up in the specs.
I can't help you with OO or LO--I have abandoned them because they are too
complicated, but if you can (or at least could) print
postcards, you seem to have figured out that part of the problem. If you have
the version of OO that worked, I would suggest you

difficult to find an old copy if you don't have one yourself.

Oh, if only life were so simple!

Printers vary greatly in how they deal with whatever is sent to them.
How does your printer deal with non-standard paper sizes? What if the
actual paper is a different size from the document? If you enter
paper sideways - e.g. with envelopes - which side does your printer
think is "up"? And more ...

The problem is in the software.

Not necessarily. OpenOffice (and LibreOffice) separate the document
size and orientation from the printer settings, which idea some will
think is sensible. (I'm one.) Your alternative product may not do
this. Indeed, I suspect that the questioner's problem may arise from
a mismatch between the document dimensions and the printer settings.
He may, for example, have a document with postcard-sized landscape
pages but be printing these on card stock with perhaps two, three, or
four cards formed in an A4 (or "Letter") portrait sheet. The images
may need to print on the cards in either orientation. If the printer
settings are wrong, I'd be slow to accuse the software.

If you have the version of OO that worked, I would suggest you
remove the present version and install the old one.

It's pretty unlikely, I suggest, that this is something that has been
broken in an OpenOffice upgrade. The questioner said he had been
"using OpenOffice for quite some time now" and said nothing about any upgrade.

I can't help you with OO or LO--I have abandoned them because they
are too complicated ...
I wish someone would tell the devs that the old saw is correct: If

Perhaps your decision that OpenOffice must be the problem is based on
your existing opinion of the product? It may just be that your
prejudice is showing here. I wouldn't want you to lead astray other
readers of this list.

That was true in the time of matrix printers, but technology has changed

I have figured it out and it works. If you give us the size of postcards
you like to print or better send us a file
with an example I can inform you how to set the printer settings (in
OpenOffice).

If you have the version of OO that worked, I would suggest you

No need to remove the present version as it works on 4.1.1 as good as on
