something like:

 /usr/lib64/pm-utils/sleep.d/55NetworkManager

Re: KVM image fails to resume after f38->40 upgrade

2024-07-13 Thread fedora

I still do not have a solution.

Changing the CPU model in the vm details is mostly "to be applied on next boot",
but I am not in a position to boot (I need to unpause).

If anyone understands what model to set, or how else to get past this issue
then please offer your wisdom.

As an aside, what lead to this problem in the first place? The same problem
when booting my last f30 kernel
so it must be (?) some libvirt change.

I hope that as a last resort I will be able to cold boot the vm, linux is
rather good with crash recovery.
Last resort.

Assuming myth follows the basic RE syntax, square brackets must be included in

another f38->f40 issue: network if is renamed.

2024-07-14 Thread fedora

I notice that the network interface 'eth1' is now renamed 'enp2s0' but eth0 is
left alone.

How do I stop this rename? It breaks a number of thing for me.

I note that some interfaces are configured in
/etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 579 Dec 9 2022 ifcfg-eth0
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 653 Jul 13 20:11 ifcfg-eth1
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 55 Dec 9 2022 route-eth0

but many more are in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/
where there is no ifcfg-eth1.

Is there some confusion between the two places?

Maybe I need to put ifcfg-eth1 with the others? I will test...

Tried, and got a failure:
[network] You are using 'network' service provided by
'network-scripts', which are now deprecated.
[network] 'network-scripts' will be removed from distribution in near
future.
[network] It is advised to switch to 'NetworkManager' instead for
network management.

So NM does at least look in network-scripts, should I empty that directory?

ifcfg-eth0 in both places is a bit different, which one is used? I am happy to
do a cleanup.

NM also overwrites by handmade /etc/resolv.conf...

Looks like a mess to me.

What does it break?

I have a number of scripts, some tcpdump, some fw rules, some data collection,
and such.
I see command failures when attempting to use eth1.

You can edit the connection with nmcli or directly in
/etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/.
In the "[connection]" section, add or edit the "interface-name=" line. Set it to what you
want, presumably "eth1".

Looks like it may be what I need. I see two connection configurations for eth1.
Should I remove one?

$ sudo ls -1 /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/
'System eth1-9c92fad9-6ecb-3e6c-eb4d-8a47c6f50c04.nmconnection'
# has 'interface-name=eth1'
'System eth1.nmconnection'
# has 'interface-name=eth1'
'Wired connection 1.nmconnection'
# does not have 'interface-name='

Maybe adding a name to the last one (eth0) will help?

Looking at the system log I see:

kernel: r8169 :05:00.0 eth0: RTL8168h/8111h, b4:2e:99:83:6d:7d, XID 541,
IRQ 161
# this is correct
kernel: e1000e :02:00.0 eth1: (PCI Express:2.5GT/s:Width x1)
00:1b:21:3a:56:72
# this is correct
kernel: e1000e :02:00.0 enp2s0: renamed from eth1
# this is what I do not want.

So, despite having 'interface-name=eth1', the interface is renamed. Why?

I will also try to boot with cmd line option 'net.ifnames=0' which was
suggested.

The reason for the renaming is to ensure that the interface names are
consistent in every boot. It is an issue on some systems that an interface may
be eth0 on one boot the eth1 on the next.

I do not understand the logic. If the name is assigned to a MAC then it will be
stable regardless, on every boot.

Consider using the new naming so you have stability.
FYI it’s been this way for many years, not sure why this
was not the case in f38 for you.

Also the use of the ifcfg files is legacy, you should migrate to NetworkManager.

I agree, I need to bite the bullet. A difficult new trick for an old dog.

I see that I can use nm-connection-editor (GUI) or nmcli (cli).

Is the "old" 'interface' term equivalent to nm 'connection' or 'device'? For
example when used with tcpdump?

'nmcli device show' lists two devices, enp2s0 and eth0.
'nmcli connection show' lists 4 ether connections,
'nmcli' shows
enp2s0: connected to Wired connection 2
eth0: unmanaged
'nm-connection-editor; lists 4 ether connections, two have 1/2 days "Last
Used", two say 4-years/never.

Probably safe to delete the two old ones. Then sort out the other two.

So a mishmash...

In f41 the ifcfg support is proposed to be fully remived from Fedora.

This is not true.
The eth devices are numbered in the order they are discovered by the kernel.
That is why they can change on each boot if discovery timing has races.

Agreed, but this is not my point. I understand that the devices are initially
named randomly,
but then the ifcfg scripts rename them based on the MAC, like
DEVICE=eth1
HWADDR=00:1b:21:3a:56:72

I thought that in the end, I can name the interfaces any way I want this way.

Nevertheless, if fedora is moving to nm I should redo my network configuration
that way
and remove all the then unused (I assume) scripts.

enp2s0 (00:1B:21:3A:56:72)
eth0 (B4:2E:99:83:6D:7D)

Should I remove the last (very old) connections? Maybe not because I will end
up with two eth1 connections.

What I really want is:
Wired connection 1 eth0 (B4:2E:99:83:6D:7D)# like it is now
Wired connection 2 eth1 (00:1B:21:3A:56:72)# adjusted

As an aside, what lead to this problem in the first place? The same problem
when booting my last f30 kernel
so it must be (?) some libvirt change.

I hope that as a last resort I will be able to cold boot the vm, linux is
rather good with crash recovery.
Last resort.

I ran into this as well.  Something changed with CPU flags.  I couldn't find
any way to get it to resume, it will most likely need to be restarted.

I tested a restart (using a clone) and it came up.

I only needed to change the watchdog

Warning - I have no real idea regarding the underlying issue and
therefore how to address it *properly*.

Shot-in-the-dark ideas...

If you haven't already done so, you can try:
- exporting the VM, deleting it without deleting the storage, and then
importing it back in (reattaching storage as needed)
- creating a new VM and attaching the existing storage

But tbh my best guess is that these won't help. You may just have to
boot without restoring from the saved state.

I looked into the saved memory (e4.saved for me) and I see that it contains the
e4.xml file
that is usually in /etc/libvirt/qemu/.

I suspect(*1) that regardless of what I do to the VM storage, an attempt to
resume from the saved state
will still fail.

Though I am now trying this:

1) save a copy of the storage/state disk. 'cmp' the files. [OK]
2) run the VM (not resume). Shut it down. I already confirmed that it works.
[OK]
3) resume (restore) and see what happens. [NO]

(*1) notice that the restore command does not name the domain, only points to
the save status file.
All status probably comes from the embedded e4.xml there.

Maybe extract the xml file from e4.saved and use it for the VM?

I do not understand this. Why extract it? I am rather convinced that the
embedded xml is used on resume,
and the one in /etc is not consulted. Maybe you can explain where to extract it
to.

Just
long enough to get it resumed and properly shutdown, then go back to
the current version.

Is there really anything important in the paused VM that will be lost
if you just reboot it?

Not really. I already did just that and it booted just fine (from a quick
check).
I feel that proceeding to use it will be OK. It is just what crash+reboot looks
like
for a real linux machine, and I had this many times and never lost much.

While this may be an interesting academic
exercise, it seems to be "off in the weeds",

"off in the weeds" is a good observation, and it really is just me wanting to
understand
the situation and how it can be resolved properly. I hoped someone here knows
how to resume,
I have only rudimentary understanding of libvirt and friends.

and even if you get the
paused VM resumed, I would have a certain amount of distrust for it
going forward.

If I can resume this image "correctly" then I will trust it more than a cold
boot.

And BTW, I do have good backups of files that I care about. Naturally.

Regards,

<https://discussion.fedoraproject.org> a while ago.
Sorry I do not have a link to the discussion. You should be able to search and
find it.

Tried many searches but failed to find the thread. If you (or anyone else) can
find it then do tell.

I think the issue is that some defaults changed in KVM/libvirt and that meant
that the checks
done to see if the resume of the VM can be done do not pass.
There was a way to change the defaults are get the VM to resume.

My understanding is that the saved state requires vmx-* features which are not
available now (f40),
but were enabled when the vm was saved under f38.

Either the kernel turns these off, or a mitigation does this, or something else.

I tried many boot command options (one at a time):
dis_ucode_ldr
mitigations=off
kvm-intel.nested=1
but I still see (after a reboot) in lscpu:
KVM: Mitigation: VMX disabled

How to I force vmx to be enabled?

I do not have this mobo or DDR5 but thought one should consider the mobo as
limiting the speed.
Some, will limit the DRAM speed as more DIMMs are added.

Try to install only one DIMM and see if it makes a difference.

Also, I see in the image that you installed in slots A2/B2. Is this what the

Ext4 errror?

2010-07-05 Thread fedora
Hi listers

i got file system errors on a new machine (hw errors should therefore
not be an issue, also smartctl does not indicate any errors), which
holds two disks on SATA controllers. Both disks contain a fully fleged
Fedora 13, so that i can boot from either of them.

i usually boot from the first disk, and i take care not to cross-mount
the second disk or to unmount cross-mounts before hibernating.

[r...@myws ~]# uname -a
Linux myws.lan 2.6.33.5-124.fc13.x86_64 #1 SMP Fri Jun 11 09:38:12 UTC
2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[r...@myws ~]#

The complete log of a boot cycle follows in the next message.

The file systems error manifests itself as follows in /var/log/messages:

Jul 5 07:04:59 myws kernel: EXT4-fs error (device dm-0):
ext4_free_inode: bit already cleared for inode 136802
Jul 5 07:04:59 myws kernel: EXT4-fs error (device dm-0):
ext4_free_inode: bit already cleared for inode 136803

When this error occurs i can no longer do such simple things as

touch /tmp/abcd.txt

which at this time gives me "No such file or directory"

to shut down the system, i usually use the hibernate function (i.e. save
to the swap space), i mostly do not reboot the system. But then, after
some resume/thaw cycles from the swap space, the above error happens,
and i have to reboot.

when rebooting, the system goes through one ore two fsck cycles whith
"File System has been modified, reboot needed" and reboots itself.

when the system comes up after that, the above error does not happen
anymore, but i am not sure, whether the system is in the same state as
before, i.e. i am not sure, whether i have lost data.

for /dev/sda (i.e. the first disk), the setup is as follows:

[r...@myws ~]# fdisk -l /dev/sda

Re: Install Fedora 13 from Hard Drive

2010-07-12 Thread fedora
jambo

i usually download the full iso dvd and the netinst iso CD.
i mount the full iso on a web-server, so that the relevant directory is
visible via the web, and burn the netinst iso CD.
i create a kickstart file. this ks points to the web, with the full iso:

url --url http://install.mydomain.com/f13

except if i install on the web-server itself. then this line looks like:

harddrive --partition=/dev/sda3 --dir=/software/fedora/

then i boot the server to be installed from the netinst CD and give it
the approp ks link:

ks=http://install.mydomain.com/ks/myserver.ks.txt

as kernel parameter.

Did you check to see, whether your Display manager is running? Display
manager (for Gnome), by default, is metacity.
to check:
ps xa |grep metacity

to restart:
metacity --replace &

if you selected a different Display Manager, issue commands accordingly.

From when on is IPv6 address information available on an interface?

2010-03-15 Thread fedora
Hi listers
I have activated an IPv6 router in the local network. Every host has, as
expectect, grabbed the prefix and constructed its own Link local, Site
local (if requested), and Global addresses. Problem is: from when on is
IPv6 adress information available for a certain interface?

I have a laptop which I normally use via Ethernet (interface eth0). But
at times, I use it via wlan0. As I have installed a test enironment for
two Web applications on the laptop, I need to dynamically change the DNS
for these applications, depending on which IP address (IPv4 as well as
IPv6) the laptop is on. I had developped a script, which automatically
changes DNS for the laptop, when I restart the network on the laptop
(/etc/init.d/network restart). The IPv4 address for the laptop comes in
via DHCP, IPv6 address comes in via neighbor and router solicitation.
After DHCP and neigbor/router solicitation, the script to update the
dynamic DNS asks for the actual IPv4 address, which is readily available
at that point in time. Then it asks also for the IPv6 address, and gets
the empty string. A snippet of the output of this DNS update script when
used with wlan0 follows:

...
Shutting down loopback interface: [ OK ]
Bringing up loopback interface:[ OK ]
Bringing up interface eth0:
Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check
cable?
[FAILED]
Bringing up interface wlan0:
Determining IP information for wlan0...++ ip -o -f inet6 addr show dev
wlan0 scope site
+ ad=
++ echo
++ /usr/local/scripts/extract-field.pl '' 4
+ ax=
++ echo
++ cut -d/ -f1
+ ay=
+ echo
server ns.mydomain.com
update delete dick.dyn.lan A
update delete dick.dyn.lan
update add dick.dyn.lan 86400 A 192.168.97.20
update add dick.dyn.lan 86400
update delete bg.dyn.lan CNAME
update add bg.dyn.lan 86400 CNAME dick.dyn.lan
update delete auth.dyn.lan CNAME
update add auth.dyn.lan 86400 CNAME dick.dyn.lan
send
Creating key...
...

As you can see from the DNS update command list, the IPv4 address is
present, whereas the IPv6 address is empty. The IPv6 address is asked
for via the command
ip -o -f inet6 addr show dev wlan0 scope site
which returns an empty string.

When, after this procedure, I recall the DNS update script manually,
everything works fine including the IPv6 address.

Has anybody had similar troubles when asking for IPv6 address data from
an interface?

Thanks in advance for any hint.

Is possibly the boot manager not correctly installed? Do you get any
boot screen with kernel-name?
Otherwise, try to boot from your recovery/installation CD, go into

Fedora 15 - copy and paste problem

2011-06-21 Thread fedora
Hi all
when it came to upgrade gnome within Fedora 13, i could no longer use
the mouse-middle-button to paste the clipboard: i had to click both left
and right mouse keys.
OK, thats past.
Yesterday, however, i installed Fedora 15 and now neither of the keys
work: when i strike text with the right mouse key pressed, no text is
copied to the clipboard, and when i either push both left and right keys
of the mouse or i click the middle mouse key, nothing happens, no
clipboard copied to the input line.
the only way i can do copy-and-past now is to strike the text i want to
copy and then use the edit menu of the respective application, and click
copy there, and then move to the input line and click paste in the edit
menu of the respective application.

am i missing something with the mouse-key emulation in the X server?

How can i get back to the old Unix style behaviour?

thansk for all hints.

Back to fedora 13

2011-06-28 Thread fedora
Installation here:
powernow-k8: Found 1 AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 630 Processor processors (4
cpu cores) (version 2.20.00)
4GB RAM
ATI Radeon RS 740 chip

After a lost week of trying, googling, trying again, experimenting,
booting... i decided to go back to fedora 13. i need to have an
operational computer, not an experimental one.

1.
Desktop Background: can't create a Gradient: you can only enter one color

2.
VirtualBox, upon suspend/hibernate, gets a TERM signal, upon which all
started VMs ask, whether they should get the Shutdown signal, etc.

3.
Impossible to configure two-click copy-and-paste. Upon selecting some
text, you always have to use right click and then "copy" and again right
click and then "paste". Emulate3Buttons in /etc/X11/xorg.conf does nothing.

4.
You cannot edit the gnome-top panel manually. Drag-and-Drop from the
Preferrred list (dash) is no longer possible, if you have reinstalled
the GNOME Desktop Group.

5.
the shutdown menu, when selected from the username menu on the right top
corner, does not show up in many situations, possibly depending on
whether VirtualBox is running or not?

6.
After installation, it is no longer possible to change the time
presentation in the top panel, e.g. you cannot select "date and time"

7.
After reinstallation of GNOME Desktop Group, the bottom panel/status
panel does no longer show up, and no way to change panel configuration
manually.

8.
With gnome-shell functionality, changing the workspace only takes 4
mouse clicks, whereas it requires 1 single mouse click when using the
bottom workspace selecter (if it where presented)

9.
using compiz window-manager is no longer possible with fedora 15, you
can't bring compiz away from its start-up failure
"GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing"

10.
you cannot edit the launchers presented in the dash, like e.g. to add
geometry parameters to the gnome-terminal-launcher

11.
Firefox 4, sometimes (?), does not execute Javascipt correctly,
parameters from the HTML page are not copied correctly?

12.
The system log /var/log/messages is full of "[drm:drm_edid_block_valid]
*ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 152" and follow-ups,
which apparently are generated every 5 seconds.

13.
you cannot run gnome-shell with the kernel parameter NOMODESET set,
which would avoid the nuisance of number 12.

14.
But in contrast, the NOMODESET kernel parameter is set after
installation: fedora 15 disables itself.

15.
impossible to prevent gnome-screensaver to lock the session after
resuming from suspend/hibernate. The lock/nolock switch in system
settings/screen is changing nothing. Only killing the gnome-screensaver
process altoghether helps.

16.
After once selecting Suspend from the top-right menu Power-down, you
cannot access Hibernate any more. The only choices you got afer that,
are Suspend directly in the top-right menu, and various types of
shutting down from the top-right menu Power Off when pressing ALT. In a
terminal window you may enter pm-hibernate.

17.
Fedora 15 Kickstart installation is broken and can be started only after
applying a patch to the installer

named shows different results

2011-06-29 Thread fedora
Hi listers

I have a very curious problem here:

I changed some CNAME entries in the named for a specific domain this
morning.

when i now (from an internal workstation) do a
dig @nameserver cname

i get a different answer, depending on whether @nameserver points to the
local address 192.168 or on the public ip address 212.90. of the
nameserver

in the first case, named returns the old (incorrect) address of cname.
in the second case, named returns the new (correct) address of cname.

when i let @nameserver point to the secondary nameserver, the above
difference does not show up, it always returns the correct address.

from the outside world, the new (correct) value is always returned.

what could the problem be and how to avoid it?

thanks in advance

Re: named shows different results

2011-06-30 Thread fedora
Hi Tim
i think the problem comes from the different views a DNS provides.

in my config i should be more specific about which zone belongs to which
view. On an internal view (which by default i catch when accessing the
DNS on the internal network) it may be of no importance when an external
address changes.
because i am not so familiar with views-configuring in named, as a
workaround, i told the DHCPD to give me the external address for all
DNS, so that i can get a hold of the external view of the DNS. And in
the external view, the addresses are correct.

Re: New Fedora DVD 64 Install replaced my previous GRUB2 info! (Dual Boot)

2011-07-12 Thread fedora
Hi
to be a bit more specific about chainloading:

This is my /boot/grub/menu.lst:

# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that
# all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /boot/, eg.
# root (hd0,0)
# kernel /vmlinuz-version ro root=/dev/sda2
# initrd /initrd-[generic-]version.img
#boot=/dev/sda
default=0
timeout=11
#splashimage=(hd0,0)/grub/splash.xpm.gz
#hiddenmenu
title Fedora (2.6.34.9-69.fc13.x86_64)
 root (hd0,0)
 kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.34.9-69.fc13.x86_64 ro
root=UUID=f5ec98fc-01eb-4f37-b932-72d0d07cf25b rd_NO_LUKS rd_NO_LVM
rd_NO_MD rd_NO_DM LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 KEYTABLE=sg
nomodeset
 initrd /initramfs-2.6.34.9-69.fc13.x86_64.img
title chain to second disk
 rootnoverify (hd1,4)
 chainloader +1

The first "title" boots from the first partition of the first Disk (root
(hd0,0))
the second shows the menu (chainloads) from the fifth partition of the
second Disk (rootnoverify (hd1, 4))
Check to see on your system, where the approp partitions with the
systems are and set up the grub menus in these partitions. Then install
grub in the MBR with a /boot/grub/menu.lst like the above.

[SOLVED] Ext4 errror?

2010-08-01 Thread fedora
Hi Bill
on July 5 you replied kindly on my message.
The last few days i mean to have solved the problem by facing out LVM.
As you said LVM adds considerable overhead and makes the system error
prone. What previousely has been on an lv is now on a real partition.
Serial disk access is now twice as fast as with LVM, you see that when
resuming from hibernation: 116 MB/s as opposed to 60 MB/s

You have multiple boot drives, LVM, barriers with SMP, and repeated
hibernate.
You didn't mention compiling with suspend2 patches (or whatever it's called
today), have you done that, too? I would start by not hibernating and
seeing if
that's the issue, turn off barriers and see if that's the issue. Right
now you
call this an ext4 problem, but I've been running TB of storage on ext4
since the
early FC9 days, and not having issues. But stock hibernate has issues on
some of
my machines, barrier code is still changing and has had issues with SMP
in the
past, and LVM is really not needed unless things are likely to change
(and adds
overhead, and possibly has issues with barriers).

I have the feeling that you have an overly high ratio of solution to
problem on
the complexity scale.

Re: Fedora13

2010-08-08 Thread fedora
I just install 4 partitions as you may see from /etc/fstab:
[r...@casablanca ~]# cat /etc/fstab

#
# /etc/fstab
# Created by anaconda on Tue Jul 27 13:18:24 2010
#
# Accessible filesystems, by reference, are maintained under '/dev/disk'
# See man pages fstab(5), findfs(8), mount(8) and/or blkid(8) for more info
#
UUID=afe5a1d5-a316-4cfb-90e0-d7e44b582037 /   ext4
   defaults1 1
UUID=f9671037-dc1f-48db-9af2-3fea0d8187c1 /boot   ext3
   defaults1 2
UUID=db29d16c-6dd1-4403-8d3e-2188837d06af /data   ext4
   defaults1 2
UUID=767752a5-5c99-4076-82d0-8912ef12a0db swapswap
   defaults0 0
tmpfs /dev/shmtmpfs defaults0 0
devpts /dev/ptsdevpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
sysfs /syssysfs defaults0 0
proc/proc procdefaults0 0
/data/home /home autobind0 0
[r...@casablanca ~]#

I was not too certain, wheather /boot can be mounted on ext4 with F13,
so instead of investigating very far, I created a separate partition
with ext3.
I loop-mount /home into /data so that erverything which may become large
and larger is in /data. I also link mysql, named, and ldap from /var/lib
into /data.

The partition sizes are as follows:

[r...@casablanca ~]# df -k
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda2 12095032 5612516 5868116 49% /
tmpfs 1964368 240 1964128 1% /dev/shm
/dev/sda1 198337 41380146717 22% /boot
/dev/sda5462972776 47677060 391778020 11% /data
[r...@casablanca ~]#

NOTE: do not use LVM with F13 and ext4. It took me quite a while to find
out, that the "errors" I had on ext4 like:

Jul 17 14:10:35 casablanca kernel: EXT4-fs error (device dm-0):
ext4_mb_generate_buddy: EXT4-fs: group 80: 25516 blocks in bitmap, 25515
in gd
... (hundreds like this)

where due to LVM (as opposed to ext4). Then I faced LVM out (needed a
new installation), and no more problems with ext4.

Re: Installing jre plugin in Fedora 13

2010-08-10 Thread fedora
Did you check whether the IcedTea plugin is installed? The IcedTea
plugin represents jre.

if not installed do:
yum install java-1.6.0-openjdk-plugin-1.6.0.0-41.b18.fc13.x86_64

(select the right architecture)

Re: Migrating data off a failing drive

2010-08-21 Thread fedora
Hi Suvayu
I have made bad experiences with LVM toghether with ext4 and fedora 13.
I got hundreds of

Jul 17 15:38:05 casablanca kernel: EXT4-fs error (device dm-0):
ext4_free_inode: bit already cleared for inode 136800

in the respective logs.
When rebooting I also got hundreds of

Jul 17 15:38:22 casablanca kernel: EXT4-fs error (device dm-0):
ext4_free_inode: bit already cleared for inode 136784
Jul 17 15:38:23 casablanca kernel: EXT4-fs error (device dm-0):
ext4_mb_generate_buddy: EXT4-fs: group 46: 9159 blocks in bitmap, 7910 in gd

where dm-0 means the first logical volume.

Since I have wiped out LVM from the disks, no problems any more.

If you still want to keep LVMs, do not forget to create the virtual
group(s):

   1. create a physical volume with pvcreate
   2. create the virtual groups in the physical volume using vgcreate
   3. create an LVM on the virtual groups with lvcreate
   4. make the file system into each logical volume

To copy the data, you may use rsync. In case you encounter disk errors
the following programs may be helpful:

dd_rescue
myrescue
badblocks
testdisk
ext3grep
foremost
photorec

good luck

Compiz fails after upgrading the Kernel

2010-09-13 Thread fedora
Hi listers

I upgraded myhost to the following version of fedora 13 this morning.

[myu...@myhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux myhost.lan 2.6.34.6-54.fc13.x86_64 #1 SMP Sun Sep 5 17:16:27 UTC
2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[myu...@myhost ~]$

After the upgrade compiz failed to work in the upgraded system. When I
try to start compiz, it says:

[myu...@myhost ~]$ compiz --replace &
[1] 3012
[myu...@myhost ~]$ compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is
missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

[1]+ Exit 1 compiz --replace
[myu...@myhost ~]$

I thought that it was a failure in a library or in the xorg-server
alltoghether and googled around with that in mind to find a solution. I,
however, didn't find anything which helped. I also did not find any
convincing error in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, except that according to
this log

[20.929] (WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering disabled

When I did, however,
[myu...@myhost ~]$ glxinfo |grep -i direct
direct rendering: Yes
[myu...@myhost ~]$

I then gave the old kernel (2.6.33.6-147.2.4.fc13.x86_64) a try and -
unexpectedly - compiz workes fine with the new libraries when using the
old kernel.

This is how I start the two kernels:

Note that I do not use the "nomodeset" flag.

The graphics driver is radeon:

Has somebody had a similar problem? How did you solve the problem with
the new kernel?

Re: X won't start - segmentations fault

2011-03-14 Thread fedora
HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) is part of udev. You find its config
files in /etc/udev/rules.d/
The corresponding HAL config file is /etc/udev/rules.d/90-hal.rules and
here (Fedora 13) looks like

[myuser@myws /etc/udev/rules.d]$ cat 90-hal.rules
# pass all events to the HAL daemon
RUN+="socket:@/org/freedesktop/hal/udev_event"
[myuser@myws /etc/udev/rules.d]$

Re: ssha passwords

2011-04-12 Thread fedora
At this site, we are using LDAP authentication exclusively. In the LDAP
DIT whe have all kinds of hased passwords including crypt, ssh, ssha. In
front of the password hash of the userPassword attribute we indicate the
type of hash used:

{crypt}/ey2ykUvpobl
{SHA}QwdAWqb3+JCy34khUkrR81af/B
{SSHA}yVvZPg6Pz9WOjEUoLIv2XRpJAQRhzu

We can auttenticate a user via pam, and the mail-message store
authenticates mail users using the same userPassword attribute.

The primary hash is indicated in the LDAP config:
  olcPasswordHash: {SSHA}
Thus, when we use the LDAP tools (ldapadd, ldapmodify) to add/change
passwords, the hash type is indicated automatically in the userPassword
attribute as explained above.

Re: ssha passwords

If i remember correctly, modifying passwords in the LDAP DIT via the
normal password utility should be possible at least since the
introduction of sssd.
As we do not go this way, i can't tell you how to configure it.

Re: Fedora 14: GDM, sssd and LDAP authentication

Hi

The following sssd.conf and pam.d/gdm and pam.d/gdm-password work here
on fedora 13.
With quite a bit of debuggind i found out that for sssd you have to
specify all bases in the sssd.conf.
i have not been able to make sssd run with TLS.

[r...@myws ~]# cat /etc/sssd/sssd.conf

# SSSD will not start if you don't configure any domain.
# Add new domains condifgurations as [domain/] sections.
# Then add the list of domains (in the order you want them to be
# queried in the 'domains" attribute above and uncomment it

filter_users = root
reconnection_retries = 3

# The EntryCacheTimeout indicates the number of seconds to retain before
# an entry in cache is considered stale and must block to refresh.
# The EntryCacheNoWaitRefreshTimeout indicates the number of seconds to
# wait before updating the cache out-of-band. (NSS requests will still
# be returned from cache until the full EntryCacheTimeout). Setting this
# value to 0 turns this feature off (default)
# entry_cache_timeout = 600

Re: kickstart partitioning error

2010-11-24 Thread fedora
You do not re-create the physical volume using "--onpart=sda3 --noformat"
Could it possibly be that on partition sda3 there exists a physical
volume from a previous installation, which is of different name, and
which is not removed by this installation?

Re: program crashes on SIGSEGV, how debug it?

2010-12-08 Thread fedora
Hi Franta
try to run it under strace

strace /path/to/your_failing_program

of, in case it is a server:

strace -p PID-of-your-failing-program

strace logs all system calls in the error log.

Re: program crashes on SIGSEGV, how debug it?

2010-12-08 Thread fedora
After writing something beginning with
write(3, "CONF: reserving 8256Kb at 0x1000"..., 71) = 71

and then reading /etc/localtime

your program requested more memory:

munmap(0xb641, 4096)

and crashed. doesn't this give you a clue?

Multihoming confusion

2010-01-31 Thread fedora
Hi every

I am changing the ISP from aaa.bbb.243.160/27 to ccc.ddd.206.128/27.
In order to provide seamless service to our customers I made the hosts
concerned multihomed, i.e. I added them a logical interface on the new
subnet. I did not introduce a additional NIC into the hosts.
Then, I changed the default route on the hosts to the new network.

e.g in one host concerned you will see

Hi HW

thank you very much, that helps.
I was before on a page describing this advanced routing, however, the main
title there was "Load Sharing and Performance increase", which is not,
what I sought. So I let it off.

The downside of this, we don't want to backup all of the OS tree, but

Do you need exactly NetworkManager? If you only have static connections
you may use network.service instead of NetworkManager.service

systemctl stop NetworkManager

systemctl enable network

not sure, as i am not using f20.

so check /etc/ssh/sshd_config, look for line

   DenyUsers root

and/or

   PermitRootLogin no

to allow root, remove 'root' from "DenyUsers" and/or change
"PermitRootLogin"
to 'yes'.

restart sshd with

   /etc/init.d/sshd restart

Hi Patrick
I lately bought a Samsung CLX 3305. This is a color laser printer,

My CLX 3305, however, is not on the LAN but on USB at a workstation. And
it is not a fast machine, that not. But from the functionality point of
view: with the Samsung Driver: no problem.

if your main concern is FTP access to the web, then i would recommend an
FTP server, which allows virtual user-ids, such as pure-ftpd. Then,
you could open a new virtual user-id for each project, each web, and
communicate it to all participants of the project or web.

I have not had sound working since the original kernel for F20 (3.11.x).

What motherboard do you have? Maybe it is specific board that has a
problem.

Look at the thread for:

Sound not working on 3.12.x and 3.13.x kernels for Fedora 20

to see what others have said. The 3.14.x kernel has no sound either.

I have other motherboards that do not have a problem with sound.

What kind of virtualization technology are you using? What kind of
networking setup do you have (bridged, NAT-ed, host-only). Does your
laptop connect with network using wireless or Ethernet card? Why aren't
you using Network Manager for managing your network? What do you mean by
"systemctl restart network fails" (could you post here some log messages?)

Mateusz Marzantowicz

I do Virtualization using VirtualBox.
The VMs are from WindowsXP, Windows7, Fedora Linux, Solaris, FreeBSD,
OpenBSD, you name it.
But I never hibernate nor suspend the Host system, while a VM is
running, I always do a Save-the-machine-State on all VMs before I
hibernate or suspend the Host.
And when I wake up the Host, usually the VMs come up when waked up
whithout problems.

If the interfaces are up and running, they are working immediately.
This is not DNS, where you have to wait for the end of the

Hi Robert
I never had problems using this type of installation (F21 and F22):

using an KS installation for a minimal server install to avoid the
troubles with the disk partitionning.

That installs about 800 and odds packages.

after that:
dnf groupinstall Xfce

which installs some more than 1000 Packages.

Then you have an System with Xfce Desktop with no Gnome add-ons or such.

And all this remains set if I reboot.

But I am not able to establish a connection under kdeconnect.
Neither device sees the other.
Also "sudo nmap -sT -O localhost" on the laptop does not show

If I run "sudo systemctl stop firewalld"

It seems that these firewalld commands
to not open the specified ports, as I would expect.

Could some firewalld expert please elucidate.

Incidentall, I tried the alternative firewall service some time ago,
and that seemed to open the ports OK.

I remember that way back in the past I always had to change at least one

This is probably a dumb question, but did you make sure there weren't any
gnome-related dot files left, such as .gnome3 or something similar? Also,
check under .config if you haven't. I don't really think this is the issue,
but it can't hurt to be sure.

Yes, I did. Also under ~/.local.
I finished with find's of "-iname '*gnome*'" and "-iname '*gconf*'".

One further test, created a new user and it could not login into
gnome either.

Re: Is hibernation broken?

2016-09-22 Thread fedora

Hi listers
I also noticed that hibernation in Fedora 24 does not work much more
than in previous versions of fedora.
I use hibernation because I want to be able to boot from the other disk
on the PC next time I power it on, and this is not possible when using
suspend. I have been using the resume=UUID=abcdefgh kernel parameter
since fedora 12.
Here, hibernation usually fails when going down, that is, the PC goes
down but does not power off. So, I have to fully reboot (with file
system check included) and try hibernation again. This usually happens
when you are in a hurry...

I am very unhappy with the present situation.

Hi
mDNS manages only the .local domain (or its replacement if you configure

My understanding is mDNS is meant to be used when there is no local name
server. If you have a DNS server it would probably be best to disable
mDNS so you're not adding unneeded complexity. I dont know specifically
how it's meant to fail over to DNS if mDNS fails to resolve a name. I
imagine the host you're trying to reach would just ignore the mDNS

DNS server that is configured on the device. It is supposed to be able
to coexist with traditional DNS but that defeats the purpose of mDNS to
be honest.

Re: F24 to F25 upgrade: Gnome: Can only login as root

2016-11-22 Thread fedora
I had this same problem after a fresh install of Fedora (don't remember
the release).

As root:
useradd -u youruserUID -D /your/home/directory youruser
passwd youruser
newpasswd
newpasswd

Re: startx doesn't work in Fedora 25

2016-12-21 Thread fedora

Hi Rick
it's probably worth a try:

mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.orig
startx

I had a mess lately with X on a different Linux distro, but when I moved
away xorg.conf, X came back in old splendor.

Just updated from F25 to F25. No longer have a working KDE

console. startx just errored out and returned after X11 died.

I cobbled together a simple .xinitrc and am running a very
painful fvwm.

Am I missing something simple? Do I just need to use a different
command to start the desktop in F25?

kind regards,

Re: Hibernation locks the system instead of hibernating

Hi Sudir

have you tried to debug with

Hi back,

After a lot of Google search it seems to hibernate using swap file I
need both the resume flag and resume_offset flag. After setting these my
system seems to go into hibernation but doesn't recover. It just boots
into a new session. Also systemctl hybrid-sleep is working as far as I
can tell.

Hi,

I am setting up a new Dell Precision 5510. It has 16gb of RAM. I
chose to create a swapfile of 24gb (1.5 times is recommended by RHEL
7 docs).

The swap is on, resume flag has been set in /etc/default/grub, and
secure boot if off. That's my understanding of the common bug entry.

When I hibernate my system it simply locks the system. No
hibernation is done. I gave Kubuntu a try to see if there is a
problem with hibernation and it works fine on Kubuntu.

If you guys have any ideas I would really appreciate it.

Re: No NetworkManager, no IN

try
systemctl start network.service

or the appropriate in your fedora version.

All was well until I starting a yum update (2 days ago), which advised

couple of other things which I don't recall (sorry I'm not good at
recalling some details). I think that was what led me to inadvertently
deleted the NetworkManager stuff.

Underr f16 my PC doesn't now communicate with the router. They are
physically connected with an ethernet cable.
(I can access the IN using a live CD {I did so with Xubuntu 10.04.2 live CD}.)

In a terminal as root I get:-
[root@OfficeDT boot]# man NetworkManager
No manual entry for NetworkManager
[root@OfficeDT boot]# NetworkManager
bash: NetworkManager: command not found...

yum list installed, included:-

ModemManager.i686 0.5.3.96-1.fc16 @updates

ORBit2.i686 2.14.19-2.fc15
@anaconda-InstallationRepo-201105131946.i686/15

with no other NetworkManager packages

Attempts to ping the router give:-
[root@OfficeDT Desktop]# ping 192.168.1.1
connect: Network is unreachable

This pings successfully from a lap top.

I was thinking of getting the appropriate NetworkManager rpm file and
simply install it. I had a look around online but not quite getting
it. Maybe I'm being too simplistic!

Any help?

TIA,
Joe

Are there any suggestions as to what the cause might be?

The only processes that I can identify from ps before and after are

any way to identify what the kworkers are assigned to? (The problem has

Logout-login cures the problem.

Thanks.

Hello!

In the GDM/KDM menu there's an option to restart X. Also you
can restart X with
*Ctrl+Alt+Backspace*. Try choosing it (or typing it) and after this
log in your user as usual. Tell us if it works.

Have you VirtualBox(es) or somthing equivalent running?

If so:
I lost the keyboard with VirtualBox sometimes, and the following action
cured it:

- Go into your VirtualBox Application.
- Right-Hand Down from the USB selector select the keyboard.
- The keyboard will then be irresponsive from your Main System, it will,
however, be responsive in your VirtualBox application.

- Again Right-Hand Down from the USB selector deselect the keyboard
- Now the keybord should be responsive from both the Main System and
from the VirtualBox application.
