Hi
I need some advice here regarding partitioning my home system.

My home system is a triple boot system: Windows 2K, Fedora 20 and
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I have three disks, one devoted to each operating system.
The first disk has two partitions, one for the OS (win2k), the rest
for data to be shared while on the other OSs including my personal
directory

The second disk has like 4 partitions (Fedora /, /boot, /home, /swap)
The third disk has only three partitions (Ubuntu /, /boot, /swap)

My plan is to get one SSD to keep the OS (both Fedora and Ubuntu).
Instead of keeping Win2k on a drive that I rarely use (just for some
games), I plan to virtualize the disk under VirtualBox.

Given that both Fedora 20 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS use grub2, my idea for
partitioning is
1. One largish /boot partition, about 1 GB, to hold both the Fedora
and Ubuntu boot images.
2. Separate / partitions, one for Fedora, the other for Ubuntu, about
25 to 30G each
3. Keep a /home subdirectory on each of the partitions on (2), but
link a "My Data" subdirectory to the filesystem under
/home/myusername/ through fstab. "My Data" would come from another HDD
(like 1 TB aprox). The idea is to keep the /home/myusername
subdirectories apart and not let them mix because Fedora and Ubuntu
save diferent data on the home directories, then have a subdirectory
with my real data common to both systems.

Is this setup workable? Is there a better solution? I'd rather not
have to buy two SSDs
because the OS take just about 50G and I still have a lot of free
space in that partition

How about continue using your existing HDDs and install Fedora
as the host OS and then install Ubuntu and windows

as guests in VirtualBox? mostly a thought...:-)

I have never used usenet and I have only used Thunderbird and untill
recently windows phone email client and i already think Windows Phone

using Sylpheed on Fedora the other day, well see how that goes.

Sorry for the late reply. I'm sure you probably already have it
figured, this is what i did.
I logged into my Fedora desktop as regular
user; opened a Terminal; logged in as root using su -; typed
dconf-editor- on dconf-editor's left pane, I just followed
org -> gnome-> settings-daemon->  plugins  -> xsettings  submenu, then
on dconf-editor's right window - I added {'Gtk/ShellsShowsAppMenu': <0>}
next to overrides entry and that restored preferences within gedit, etc.

Hello,

I was wondering if my fedora system later in time will have
any repercussions, if I only apply the security updates and not
the entire updates from the catalog, by using the "yum --security

Thanks for the reply. That is what I was thinking. I'm going though
yum's manpage and noticed that option, I really don't feel comfortable
about starting using that option; don't want to start having bugs

Everything I've seen regarding doing reinstalling of OS, requires
having access to the box, with fresh media.

This is really intended to allow me to detect if the "base/master"
system has been hacked, and then to immeadiately switch to the minimal
OS/system, which would then invoke a netinstall for the hacked
system/OS to have a clean system.

Please excuse me for late to the party(discussion)

I'm not understanding, Are you saying if you suspect your main
install is compromise you can simply reboot into the second
OS installed on the same computer? if that is case, my opinion
is, the second os can also be compromise and forensics analysis of the
whole
system would need to be done, for example, reconstructing a

Re: AV (RCA) Cable in Fedora and Linux??

2012-04-08 Thread Edward M

On 04/08/2012 12:29 AM, Manuel Escudero wrote:

So here's the thing:

Few days ago, I bought a projector, and this projector has two entrances:

1) Mini USB

2) AV IN

The mini USB only lets you connect an USB Drive via an adapter and
read the data
from it, you can't use it to connect your PC to the projector via USB
cable, the projector
doesn't recognize that connection as a usb device itself, The AV
Connection uses

a female RCA Cable like this one:

http://50.30.33.54/gaolinimages/images/desc/61/20101105/A0366000JE/InsetImage/Practical-1m-35-Audio-to-3-RCA-Female-Cable_2.jpg

(The small black one goes to the projector and the other three females
are free)

So what I tried basically was to connect that cable to the projector
and then used this one:

http://www.pcwizkid.co.uk/images/usb%20to%203rca.jpg

To connect it to the computer via USB, in theory Fedora should
recognize the projector as
a second "monitor" and then the projector should show the image of the
computer in the "AV IN" option right?

but it doesn't happen :S

When I conect the projector to the computer via AV IN => USB neither
the projector
recognizes the computer or the computer the projector, did a test with
a lsusb to confirm...

Am I doing something wrong? does I need a hardware converter or a
program in order to this to work?
Because once I conected my Fedora Laptop to another projector Via VGA
cable and the same thing

happened, with Windows/Mac computers everything worked flawlessly.

Can anyone help??

  Have you tried?:
  xrandr --output VGA

Actually moral of the story is: in order to receive help a clear

Need more info: UEFI Secure Boot in Fedora

2012-05-31 Thread Edward M

Hi,

I fully dont understand the approach that may be taken as workaround to
USFI Secure Boot for Fedora:

The last option wasn't hugely attractive, but is probably the least
worst. Microsoft will be offering signing services through their sysdev
portal .
It's not entirely free (there's a one-off $99 fee to gain access),
but it's cheaper than any realistic alternative would have been. It
ensures compatibility
with as wide a range of hardware as possible and it avoids Fedora
having any special privileges over other Linux distributions.
If there are better options then we haven't found them. So, in all
probability, this is the approach we'll take. Our first stage bootloader
will be signed with a Microsoft key.

will I need to pay $99 to use linux, etc. what about other distros?
I know will be speculating at this point but wondering what could be the
reprecussions if this method is taken?

Why sign it at all. Also if the boot loader was signed it wouldn't be
allowed to load anything else unsigned at OS level or allow users to
install device drivers which might then take privileged control of the
system. So goodbye Nvidia driver for example. It also takes you into the
question at that point of whether a signed kernel with no key violates

The most recent state of affairs appears to be that for x86 (but *not*
at the last checkj ARM) devices it's a requirement of the windows 8 logo
and "secure" boot that it can be disabled just as things like the TC can.

Then i should be not be concerned.

What is needed then is to make sure its well documented and standardised
how people turn it off. This isn't just a Linux thing, its an old windows
thing, its a DOS thing, its a BSD thing, etc

As an end user the most effective thing anyone can do faced with a board
that has secure boot and it's not immediately obvious how to disable it
is to email and phone the suppliers tech support and pursue them
repeatedly until they give an answer. That will generally speaking exceed
their profit margin on the board by quite a bit so will make them very
keen to document it clearly for future users.

Alan

it does for /etc/bash_completion.d/).

Has something changed drastically? How do I make my wrappers complete
using standard completion functions?

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

PS: When I use a custom completion function (with none of the standard
ones inside) it works as expected.

Did you apply new released updates for fedora 17 ? I think there
were 218 new updates.
I was having numerous problems after i upgraded from 16 to 17 but
those problems were fixed once the updates were applied.

And i remembered seeing bash on the new updates list.

Yup, they are wrong. They left forgot to mention the Brief

Appears at the moment Garrett is toying with the idea but it has
not been officially approved by redhat
However it has been memtioned that on x86 systens, users will be
able to turn off the secure boot feature, hopefully
