I found the dvd+rw-format man page quite readable (unlike some others)
and helpful in explaining the difference between DVD-RW and DVD+RW
media with respect to blanking/formatting:

To blank a DVD-RW and put in the incremental sequential mode, run:
dvd+rw-format -blank=full /dev/dvd
...

-force[=full]
Perform formatting even if the medium is formatted already. This is not
recommended for BD-RE and DVD+RW media, since they need to be
formatted only once. Use -format=full to perform full (lengthy) reformat
in case of DVD-RAM ...

...

Note that DVD+RW re-formatting procedure does not substitute for
blanking. If you want to nullify the media, e.g. for privacy reasons, do
it explicitly with 'growisofs -Z /dev/dvd=/dev/zero'.

pvcreate

Hello,

Using fdisk I create a partition of 59Go (/dev/sdxy)
Then I do a pvcreate /dev/sdxy)
pvdisplay says:
/dev/sdb7" is a new physical volume of "38.00 GiB"

This probably results from a previous partitioning.

How can I clear this glitch?

Red Hat is big contributor to Gnome so Fedora is a Gnome-centered distro.
It supports other DEs but the default assumption is that you're using
Gnome. This is evident from a lot of the documentation as well the
packaging structure as you point out. That said, there's no problem using
another DE and a lot of us do so. We just put up with some the Gnome
components being more or less ever-present as long as they doesn't get in
the way. And of course having them means you can use Gnome-based apps such
as Evolution without having to put up with the weird desktop GUI.

It would be interesting to find out just what percentage of active users
are on each of the main DEs, but I can't think of a reliable way of doing
that i.e. one not subject to selection bias.

Consider giving more details first. It is confusing that you refer
to /dev/sdxy and /dev/sdb7.

Show the output of

  parted /dev/sdb p
  fdisk -l /dev/sdb
  pvs

Perhaps there will be some interesting details in there.

Fedora 21 server gnome install not starting

Hello Folks

I know there's many questions about 'no graphical environment on
server', but I've install gnome and enabled it.

After booting the display hangs following:
[ OK ] Started GNOME Display Manager
And, perhaps a few following such as starting virtualisation demon,
waiting for plymouth to quit

Following a server install I ran the following successfully:
# yum groupinstall gnome --skip-broken
# systemctl set-default graphical.target

This this is what systemctl says:
]# systemctl status -l gdm.service
● gdm.service - GNOME Display Manager

Any pointers would be very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

I don't know why no one else has mentioned this already. In my opinion
it is much easier to install a minimal set, and then build your desktop
as needed rather than install the default, and get rid of Gnome.

I'm an XFCE user (with lightdm as login manager), and everytime I did a
fresh install, I used the minimal image. You can even do a network
install. During that I simply select the gui packages I need (some
subset of XFCE for me). This way I have a very small set of gnome
packages.

  $ rpm -qa gnome\* | wc -l
  18

I know 18 is not a very accurate count, but it is more or less there.
Since you are using i3, I bet you can get the list to be even shorter!
Often people say disk space is cheap, why bother? I have a tiny 20 gig
/ on my laptop, so it does matter to me. On my desktop, I don't care.

Hope this helps,

Hi Morgan,

I'm asking out of personal curiosity, so please don't take this as a
criticism. If you wanted a GNOME desktop, why did you install Fedora
Server instead of Fedora Workstation?

A few years ago I read and article about the exact problem you are
talking about. Long rebuild times with larger HDDs.

Two things they pointed out is that with the amount of data on the
drives, there is also an issue with the write errors being within the
amount of data during the rebuild process.

Of course the cloud providers want you to use their services and you can
see that with all the recent articles about the death of backups due to
clouds.

I got rid of my raid arrays after I lost a drive and lost part of the
data on a rebuild. Still needed to use a different backup for recovery.

Some articles I have read are pointing out that people are looking for
reliable file systems with error correction built in and then using
normal backup techniques.

This is the same option that I am looking at for the future.

Hey Martin,

It appears that yum may have some "hidden" groups.

One really great reason to install Fedora server is that logging, using
rsyslog, works out of the box.

After learning this (this list, last week), I will be avoiding any desktop
type installers, preferring the server image for workstation and laptop
installs.

If you're concerned about rebuild times, go with more small drives and
move to raid6.

Another option is considering two 6TB drives in a raid1, per GB the
6TB Red drives are lower priced than the 2TB Reds. Of course, raid1
makes it more expensive in any case, but at reduced complexity.

And yet another option is GlusterFS either with multiple bricks on a
single node, or multiple nodes. These can even be done with ARM
boards. So you could have a volume that's for things you wan "3
copies" or, and have it automatically keep two local copies with one
async offsite copy; another volume that's more disposable, e.g. maybe
just one copy for VM images, and those would never get copied offsite.

CentOS 7's installer has Backup Client and Backup Server options as
Add-Ons, I haven't looked into what that is, but might be an idea
worth exploring.

Sure, it's fine, no complaints. I'd probably opt for XFS due to its
long standing optimizations for both hardware and software RAID,
parallel IO, etc. And piles of NAS, SANs, and even DVRs using XFS. It
has a huge install base for this use case.

lwn.net has recent reviews of Rockstor, EasyNAS, OpenMediaVault,
FreeNAS (BSD ZFS based).

Oh yeah, several things you need to check if you're using mdadm created RAID.

md/stripe_cache_size in sysfs defaults to 256, it needs to be higher,
probably 1024 but do some reading to get more specific advice. Low
values cause slow performance in general, but in particular rebuilds.

These too may be too low by default, in particular max.
/proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_max
/proc/sys/dev/raid/speed_limit_min

A pernicious problem that's totally non-obvious and comes up on
linux-raid@ list all the time. Mismatching SCT ERC and SCSI command
timer. The former needs to be shorter than the latter. Both are per
drive, not per array.

smartctl -l scterc
cat /sys/block/sdX/device/timeout

And don't forget period scrubs:
echo check > /sys/block/mdX/md/sync_action
cat /sys/block/mdX/mismatch_cnt

Btrfs isn't the default in Fedora 21 and isn't expected to be until
Fedora 23 or 24.

The Btrfs raid56 code has been in the kernel for a while, but only
since kernel-3.19 is btrfs replace, scrub, and self-heal possible. I'd
say it's now a good deal closer to stable than experimental, but
raid56 is still a gray area. I can't suggest enough having more than
one backup, but that's emphasized more if the primary one is on Btrfs.

pidgin video chat

2015-03-08 Thread Amadeus W.M.
Does anyone know how to do video chat in pidgin? I can't figure it out
for the life of me. I click on a contact name and the chat window opens.
Then, under Conversation -> Media I have 3 options: Audio call / Video
call / Audio and video call. But all are inactive (grayed out) and so
they can't be selected. Does this mean that pidgin has been compiled in
Fedora without audio/video support?

I am, however able to configure the Voice/Video Settings by going to
Tools -> Plugins -> Voice/Video Settings, then click on the "Configure
Plugin" button. So pidgin does see my camera and microphone. But what
else do I need to be able to actually use them?

I've searched the web for this, of course, and I couldn't find a
definitive answer. All information is outdated, or for other
distributions, or simply vague. For instance:

https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/vv

or the user guide (which is really a FAQ):

https://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Using%20Pidgin

Do I need to recompile pidgin with some non-free codecs enabled?

Thanks for any help!

I too would love to know the answer to this! I've been just using
another machine running Ubuntu (so that I can use Skpye occasionally!)
But I'd rather use Pidgin on my "F"-Box!...LoL!
