[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 304514] Re: [i830] Fonts smear after a while of use
Font smear shows up pretty quickly running GtkPerf from Synaptic. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 304514] Re: [i830] Fonts smear after a while of use
Andrew, Sure is an issue on IBM Thinkpad R31 i830, updated to rc4 etc. Run GtkPerf a couple of times and text is essentially black blotches and unreadable. Let me give the 2.7.0 driver a try. It's using 2.6.3 driver now. Jaunty's running well otherwise, however I do get an occasional hang for all I know might be related to whatever is spraying random pixels onto the fonts. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 304514] Re: [i830] Fonts smear after a while of use
Andrew, Installed 2.7.0 driver as reported by Xorg.0.log. I was able to run GtkPerf three times O.K., fonts O.K. Then I startedl firefox and over half the fonts in this message are big black blotches. For what it is worth, GtkPerf was about 2% faster with 2.7.0 than 2.6.3 however it doesn't mean buch since to do any meaningful work at all I've got to boot up Intrepid. Nice having dual boot. Tried taking screenshot but couldn't read the window. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 304514] Re: [i830] Fonts smear after a while of use (Hardy->Intrepid regression)
Bugzilla 21415 may well be the same problem. Some comments there said that turning swap off helped. This Thinkpad R31 has 512 mb and is not very happy with swap off, however it does run. The font smear or corruption (extra bits) is slower in appearing. I'll attach Xorg.0.log with swap off and font corruptions accumulating. . On this Thinkpad the trouble appeared about the time the driver was updated so Option "NoAccel" was not necessary. The driver in use is 2.7.0. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 828219] Re: Oneiric 16 August screen freezes, mouse freezes, no keyboard response
Unity-2D seems to run and run and run. The bug sure would seem to be Compiz Unity-3D trying some code that hangs solid on ATI Radeon Xpress 200. Any way to get a useful dump of that? Now another problem is CD Live, since it comes up in Unity-3D with no boot choice for Unity-2D. Plus with CD Live running in memory, when it hangs solid any evidence gets lost. Maybe I could try to log in from another pc on our net? What should I try to get? Logging in as a command line terminal, ubuntu-bug is strictly limited to Xorg running perfectly to send the report to Launchpad. Launchpad bug shooters have told me in the past that sending them the report as a file is useless. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Bios update is in 1404247 - if it screws up I've got a dead computer. 1410 and before run just fine. November and before 1504 ran fine. Win7 just fine. (Well, pretty slow it's Microsoft) 1504 December and on to now pretty bad. I have to "set wallpaper" multiple times. At the moment, Wily much improved - maybe half the time boots to good wallpaper just fine, the other half needs one "set wallpaper". Seems to be sensitive to xserver. Thanks for looking at the bug. I switch between Mily looking for bugs, and LTS when I can't get something done with Mily because I can't read the screen. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Kernel: linux-image-3.17.0-031700-generic_3.17.0-031700.201410060605_amd64.deb works fine installed into Wily. I think it's one of the last Utopic kernels So my drill is, update or install latest Wily, verify screen display is all screwed up, Then install a kernel that will work. I'm not a developer so I've got no way to find what changed (lots!) that would affect screen display. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1404247 Title: Vivid Wallpaper hashed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1404247/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Comment #36, this is a desk top so the display is hooked to the VGA port. I think there's only one display port on this Lenovo M58p. Interesting, boot with Wily kernel, Background Wallpaper hashed Settings Appearance Wallpapers thumbnails hashed Files Pictures displays same jpg fine command line Gsettings fails screen all brown does not display the desired jpg gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.background picture-uri 'file:home/jerry/Pictures/Shark_Island.jpg' Reboot with Utopic kernel Background Wallpaper still hashed Settings Appearance Wallpapers thumbnails fine Wallpaper displays just like Files Pictures gsettings still fails: brown screen instead of the desired jpg with Utopic kernel, Settings Appearance Wallpaper works fine. How come with Wily kernel Files Pictures jpg's display fine but Settings Appearance Wallpapers is hashed? What's the difference in the code to display with Files vs. Settings Appearance? Even in Settings Appearance, the little monitor picture is O.K. but the thumbnails are all hashed? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Jan 4 vivid 64 .iso still same problem, wallpaper vertical bars and hashed. Rebooted latest update vivid. Monitor is 1920x1080., vertical bar background. Internet windows and terminal windows fine. Tried 1360x768. Wallpaper Vertical bars. Tried 1280x720. Vertical bars. Tried 1024x768. Wallpaper O.K. but figure is stretched horizontally, i.e. fat because resolution geometry 4:3 doesn't fit screen 16:9. Switched back to 1360x768, Wallpaper now O.K. ??? Conclusion, something screwed up in the calculations for varying resolution from 1920x768 (tiny print) to legible 1360x768. Only calculation that's reliable is 1024x768, which is 4:3 does not look good on this 16:9 screen besides being too coarse. What code does the calculations for choice of pixels for varying resolutions? lightdm? Xorg? Unity? Sure would help if Bug #1405867 were fixed so that selecting different wallpapers actually changed the wallpaper instead of having to reboot to get different wallpaper. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1404247] Re: Vivid Wallpaper hashed
Testing vervid I do updates most days and installs every couple weeks. Typically there are a whole pile of packages (!) so us users don't install package by package so we can't tell which caused the trouble. I reported the bug on Dec. 19 and the bug persists on every update and every couple weeks a new .iso install still has the bug example this one zsync'd a couple days ago. Now of course 14.04 and 14.10 and earlier 15.04's do not have the bug. Neither does Win7. The closest I can get to the bug is: Boot Wallpaper hashed. Drop down windows O.K. File > Pictures > right click on desired jpg - I've tried a number, both mine and the ubuntu wallpapers Set as Wallpaper After one or two or three tries the wallpaper is correct, no hash. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160521] Re: Selected 1600x900 gets 900x1600 rotated 90 degrees
What I did was install raring amd64 iso with defaults as it is in daily build. I didn't do any changes, just installed, booted, then brought up displays to set the correct resolution for the monitor which is 1600x900, wide, with all text running horizontal wide. raring i386 iso install is fine. I'll take a look at why the default daily build may be setting rotation differently than it used to. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160521] Re: Selected 1600x900 gets 900x1600 rotated 90 degrees
Problem still exists on brand new amd64 raring. Live boot of .iso any resolutions higher than 1152 the systems settings displays only allows counterclockwise and clockwise. There is no option for normal shown. After install, same thing. The systems settings gui does not have normal option for any resolution past 1152. As in comments above (thank you): xrandr --output VGA1 --rotate normal works. Also tried setting 1152 in normal, then did systems settings displays set to 1600x900 and the normal option stayed in the drop down, and did work. Note this is an Acer Aspire 1 netbook running amd64 just fine, it's laptop screen is 1024x600 has no problem running external monitor at 1600x900 once "normal" rotation is set. This display settings deficiency exists on both 12.04 and 13.04. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1160521 Title: Selected 1600x900 gets 900x1600 rotated 90 degrees To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1160521/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1160521] Re: Selected 1600x900 gets 900x1600 rotated 90 degrees
Setup: Plug the 1600x900 HP monitor into the Aspire D255E VGA socket Boot the raring amd64 .iso (the raring i386 .iso works fine, defaults to normal rotation) Systems Settings Displays select mirror displays off select laptop display off select monitor display to 1600x900 notice that the rotation only gives two choices, counterclockwise and clockwise select apply the display is sideways get rotation to normal either by using xrandr or by selecting 1024x768 which looks a little silly on the big screen do the install boot, same thing on the systems settings displays i.e. mirror displays off etc. last install, yesterday, set to 1024 x 768 normal rotation and did apply then set to 1600x900 and the normal rotation stayed there then did apply. On the live, why does the rotation selection "normal" not appear as a choice with the higher resolutions - on ubuntu amd64? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1507255] Re: Garbled graphics in Wily with Intel GMA4500 chip
Starting in November 2014 Ubuntu X windows screwed up with VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) making Wallpaper badly hashed. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1507255 Then a couple months later even Ubuntu text badly garbled, illegible. Workarond was: /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" EndSection So in every install since Nov. 2014 I've been making that change. As of March 2016, that change screws up X windows and can't get desktop. Voila, not needed, Xwindows now running fine. That took Ubuntu a year and a half to fix.
