I'm getting something similar on 11.10 with default repos:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357471] Re: touchpad does not work

Someone just added the CVE link to this bug. Was it a mistake? That CVE
is for a buffer overrun security flaw in the Owl/BarnOwl instant
messaging client.

This bug still affects me after several re-installs of Jaunty final.
Using a usb mouse to get around it.
