[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1184451] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 random screen freeze while Normal OS activites
Can confirm this affects me on newly clean installed Ubuntu 13.10. Unity, Gnome Shell, it doesn't matter. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 994048] [NEW] xdiagnose adds an unusual item to the dash / applications menu
Public bug reported: xdiagnose is installed by default in Ubuntu 12.04, and its .desktop file adds it to the Accessories section of any applications menu. This is not an application we can expect a user to open out of interest, figure out and happily use: it has a focus on Bugs and Workarounds, and all of its checkboxes do serious things. Instead, it clutters the dash and makes Ubuntu harder to explore. I'm assuming xdiagnose is a dependency of ubuntu-desktop for a good reason, so this is just a request to please add NoDisplay=true to xdiagnose.desktop. This will hide it from the dash, and people will be able to open it directly by using the xdiagnose command. ** Affects: xdiagnose (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xdiagnose in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/994048 Title: xdiagnose adds an unusual item to the dash / applications menu To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xdiagnose/+bug/994048/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1636095] [NEW] SNA acceleration causes black background and window issues on secondary display
Public bug reported: After upgrading my laptop to Ubuntu 16.10, I noticed that the secondary monitor I use at work was showing a black background instead of the background shown on my primary display. Also if windows were dragged to the secondary display I would see weird artifacts such as multiple stacked copies of the window being dragged. I believe that this is an SNA issue on multi-monitor setups. I managed to get the old correct behaviour back by switching the accelaration method to UXA by means of Xorg configuration file. My workaround involves putting: Section "Device" Identifier "Intel Graphics" Driver "intel" Option "AccelMethod" "uxa" EndSection inside a file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf The information needed to assemble this file was found on the Arch Linux Wiki. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 129041] Re: xterm icon available by default
This really has nothing to do with xterm, except that the fix needs to be in the xterm package. Ubuntu is meant to be easy to understand, and it's really important that new users can explore all of the applications they are getting out of the box without running into a brick wall or feeling lost. That is getting difficult with the signal to noise ratio in the applications menu: scattered alongside the applications we want people to discover and enjoy we have every settings panel, a bunch of different admin tools, xdiagnose, and three terminal applications: gnome-terminal, xterm and uxterm. This isn't about xterm being bad: it's about xterm and ubuntu-desktop being an odd fit. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xterm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/129041 Title: xterm icon available by default To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/129041/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554783] [NEW] Graphics Card Fan Suddenly Stopped While Using Computer
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati While I was using my computer, doing perfectly normal things, such as reading news articles in Firefox, my graphics card's fan suddenly completely stopped, causing the GPU to overheat. At first I thought that the fan was slowing down because there wasn't anything particularly GPU intensive going on, and system load was below normal, however, like 10 minutes after, the screen turned completely black, and the computer locked up. This almost certainly because the GPU overheated. The first thing I did was tried Alt-SysRq-K to reboot the X server. That did nothing, so I tried Alt-SysRq-REISUB, and the system did NOT reboot. I'm assuming there may have been a kernel panic. Therefore, I held in the power button on my computer until it turned off. Shortly after that, I hit the power button again to turn the computer back on, but immediately after pressing the power button, the system fans started spinning at maximum speed for a split second and the system immediately shut off. No BIOS POST information was displayed on the screen or anything. So, I assumed the system shut off because it overheated and it was trying to protect the hardware. I let it sit for a couple of minutes, and then I managed to get it to turn on. Something worth noting here is that the GPU fan worked perfectly fine after a full system reboot, making me believe this is some sort of driver problem. The first time I tried to boot it, Ubuntu froze before being able to load the splash screen, so I assumed it may either be because the GPU was still overheated and not working properly, or some file system corruption. I tried Alt-SysRq-B to reboot it, but surprisingly that did nothing, so I turned it off with the power button again. I then booted into recovery mode, and thankfully, I managed to get to the recovery options. I then proceeded to run the options "dpkg, clean, and resume", but when it finished loading services, I was in a text mode login instead of GDM, so I rebooted using Alt-SysRq-REISUB. I then booted Ubuntu with the normal boot method, and after running a quick fsck, I was able to login and post this bug report on the same computer. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 437862] Re: device key_bitmask has changed
I have also had the same symptoms, I stop receiving keyboard events in X after a VT switch, and I get the same errors in Xorg log. I started getting this bug when upgrading to karmic from jaunty, however, the live cd environment or a clean install in a separate partition isn't able to reproduce the bug. The bug seems to depend on when gdm starts. For instance, if I let gdm start automatically like normal, then I will have the keyboard disabled in X on a VT switch. Logging out and logging back in will workaround the problem, and then I can do as much VT switching as I want without losing the keyboard. I can also completely avoid the bug by delaying gdm to start at rc.local, for instance by adding "initctl emit startdm" to my /etc/rc.local script and adding to "and startdm" to the "start on" upstart condition in /etc/init/gdm.conf. The bug also only seems to affect my keyboard when plugged in as a PS/2 keyboard. I have a PS/2 to USB adaptor that lets me plug in the keyboard into a usb slot, and then I will not get this issue anymore. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710762] Re: Middle mouse button no longer works
Okay, this was indeed an intentional upstream change in xf86-input- evdev. The changelog happens to carry some reasoning, too: commit 21a2ac818e75ef918d320ce1e88b6263e68e598d Author: Peter Hutterer Date: Fri May 28 09:47:17 2010 +1000 Disable middle mouse button emulation by default. The AUTO feature was the default, MB emulation was on until a middle mouse button was pressed. MB emulation however results in a delay of the first press, causing minor annoyances to the users and being generally confusing when the behaviour before a button press is different to after a button pres. Disable the feature by default instead. There's not a lot of two-button mice around anymore though and the inability to detect two-button mice makes for non-deterministic detection of when the emulation should be on. Middle button emulation can be enabled with a configuration snippet: Section "InputClass" Identifier "middle button emulation" MatchIsPointer "on" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "on" EndSection So, this is a little different than I thought. (And it even teaches me something I didn't know: it's hard to detect if a mouse only has two buttons!). We should keep an eye on what other distros do with this change. If Fedora, Debian, etc. choose to revert it, we should probably consider doing the same. Otherwise, it's effectively the new standard. Another thing to keep in mind is two-button mouses / middle clicking in general / left+right to middle click are kind of power-user features, so we can expect power-users to be happy configuring these things. I think this should definitely go in the release notes :) ** Also affects: ubuntu-release-notes Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/710762 Title: Middle mouse button no longer works ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2022824] Re: [amdgpu] random blue/pink frames in the desktop
It seems like the random blue/pink frames issue might be caused by your GPU's power state or a driver problem. Since the issue doesn’t happen during fullscreen games or with two monitors (when your VRAM clock is boosted), try forcing your GPU to run at a higher power state all the time. You can do this by enabling the "performance" power profile in the AMD GPU settings using a tool like `CoreCtrl` or by adding the kernel parameter `amdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0x` to unlock full GPU features. After making this change, reboot your system. If the issue persists, try updating to the latest Mesa drivers or switch to the `amdgpu-pro` drivers.
