[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1549455] Re: Unity 8 doesn't load on Intel Pineview graphics [qtubuntu: ASSERT: "eglDestroyContext(mEglDisplay, mEglContext) == EGL_TRUE"]

2016-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I finally got hold of a Pineview system. Seems Mir things mostly work,
except for unity8-dash crashing continuously:

Loading module: 'libubuntu_application_api_desktop_mirclient.so.3.0.0'
file:///usr/share/unity8//Dash/Dash.qml:39: ReferenceError: window is not
defined
file:///usr/share/unity8//Dash/GenericScopeView.qml:629: TypeError: Cannot read
property 'activeFiltersCount' of null
file:///usr/share/unity8//Dash/GenericScopeView.qml:628: TypeError: Cannot read
property 'filters' of null
file:///usr/share/unity8//Dash/Dash.qml:265: ReferenceError: scopeStyle is not
defined
ASSERT: "eglDestroyContext(mEglDisplay, mEglContext) == EGL_TRUE" in file
../../../src/ubuntumirclient/glcontext.cpp, line 71

Other findings:
mir-demos like mir_proving_server are super-fast, super-smooth (_except_ for
eglplasma which is super-slow).
unity-system-compositor starts obviously.
unity8 starts very slowly and the mouse is unusably slow and jerky.
unity8-dash crashes and restarts infinitely (see also bug 1578469) per the
above log.

** Summary changed:

- Unity 8 doesn't load on Intel Pineview graphics [qtubuntu: ASSERT:
"eglDestroyContext(mEglDisplay, mEglContext) == EGL_TRUE"]
+ Unity8-dash doesn't load on Intel Pineview graphics [qtubuntu: ASSERT:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1549455] Re: Unity8-dash doesn't load on Intel Pineview graphics [qtubuntu: ASSERT: "eglDestroyContext(mEglDisplay, mEglContext) == EGL_TRUE"]

2016-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Relative to Unity7 on the Pineview system:

mir_proving_server is much faster than Unity7 (perfect 60FPS compositing
and egltriangle up to 1000FPS).

Unity8 is much slower than Unity7 (only a couple of FPS at most and
sometimes less than 1).

Seems like (similar to mir_demo_client_eglplasma) some advanced shaders
cause the performance to fall off a cliff. It's not obvious where the
edge of the cliff is though, because everything keeps working, just much
slower.

We probably need a shader/GL debugging expert to look into it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026046] Re: Missing support for thumb resting on bottom of clickpad

2016-05-09 Thread James Robb
This didn't seem to be a problem with the driver that came with Ubuntu
15.04, but now that I have upgraded to 16.04, this is definitely a
problem again.

I however, did find a patch located here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=100632

After applying it, the touchpad is MUCH more usable. The laptop I am
using it on is a Dell Inspirson 15 7537.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1549455] Re: Unity8-dash on Intel Pineview graphics crashes and restarts continuously [qtubuntu: ASSERT: "eglDestroyContext(mEglDisplay, mEglContext) == EGL_TRUE"]

2016-05-09 Thread Loïc Molinari
Not related to the assertion but I got a Netbook with such a chip and it
was easily falling back to slow GPU/driver pathes. I remember for
instance transcendental functions in pixel shaders (sin, cos, etc)
taking ~1 sec to complete. So we could be hitting such an issue. Last
time I checked QtQuick didn't use trigo though (except in visualisation
debug modes).

an update to your computer's buggy, insecure, and outdated BIOS is
available (A0CN37WW). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything?

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

Also, you don't have to create a new bug report.

Once the BIOS is updated, if the problem is still reproducible:
1) Please provide the output of the following terminal command (not perform an
apport-collect):
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
2) Please make a comment specifically advising on if there was an improvement
or not.
3) Please mark this report Status New.

If it's not reproducible, please mark this as Invalid.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1568604] Re: Mouse cursor lost when unlocking with Intel graphics

2016-05-09 Thread Scott Garman
In some A/B testing I've done, changing the AccelMethod to uxa has some
unwelcome side effects, including making some browser-based video
unusable. For my test case I would just go to the home page of
bluejeans.com (a videoconferencing site) with Firefox, and my browser
would immediately lock up with the full-page video they display. After
removing the uxa setting and restarting my desktop session, it runs
smoothly. Just FYI.

Yes, I did upgrade directly to 16.04, from 14.04. In 14.04 I did not have
any issues.

related. PC has two drives, sda is spinning disks (corporate Windows

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1577074] Re: AMDGPU driver problems on "Carrizo" APU

2016-05-09 Thread jakedp
I have the same Carrizo (A10-8700P)chip and also in a HP Pavilion. This
is also a bug that effects Fedora 23 and it seems the radeon driver on
Mageia 5. I have noticed it also on Ubuntu 15.10 and Ubuntu Mate 15.10.
It effects Korora 23 the least. It is maddening that when you buy a
laptop with a AMD processor you have been waiting for you are thrown to
the curb.0

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1577074] Re: AMDGPU driver problems on "Carrizo" APU

2016-05-09 Thread nukedathlonman
I was using the closed fglrx (a.k.a. Crimson 15.12) on Kubuntu 15.10
(the latest updates from the regular repository - not the ones form the
various PPA's) and that worked fine for me. For 16.04 Wily, the kernel
packages from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v4.6-rc6-wily have newer open source AMDgpu kernel drivers
and those seem to work fine on the A10-8700P. Give that Kernel (or the
newer RC7 one) a shot.

Just a note for Jakedp (it's another unrelated bug and really doesn't
apply to this bug - so this can be ignored so far as the AMDgpu bug
report) - If we have the same laptop (and I believe we do), you'll also
have the same Realtek RTL8723BE Wireless adapter - there's another bug
that might affect you regarding that driver's antenna selection... The
fix is projected to be included in the Kernel 4.7 by the developer. I
was hoping it might have got backported into the 4.6 release candidates
- but it hasn't.

2016-05-09 Thread jakedp
I have the broadcom wireless which is the bane of my existence. Linux Mint
17.3 is having no issues. So far it is certain versions of radeon and the
amdgpu of 4.3-4.5. It is good to know that it seems to be fixed. Hopefully
the fixes will be backported into the LTS kernel. Forgot to mention this
problem is happening on Win10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1577074] Re: AMDGPU driver problems on "Carrizo" APU

2016-05-09 Thread nukedathlonman
I'm sure it will - the kernel in every release receives periodic
updates. But 4.6 is only a "candidate release" - a technical preview if
you will while bugs and such are fully baked out of the pie for final
release. You'll see one of the 4.5 kernels first - hopefully with a
fix, but it's also possible that a fix might not get backported. We
know there was a change, but what the change hasn't been pin pointed
exactly - makes it a bit harder for the Dev/packager to backport a fix
since the exact issue with the driver wasn't pinned down. Then again, I
suppose they could just backport the whole driver from 4.6g, but that
might lead into other bug's or issues... I'm sure they'll try to figure
it out.

Aside - I don't have random black screens on the Windows 10 side. I do
have (multiple) other AMD graphics drivers problems on that side
though... But let's not continue this discussion - this is supposed to
be a bug report and I'm sure the packagers/maintainers/Dev's would
rather see discussions relevant to the filed bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1575301] Re: GPU Hang [i915 / drm] crashes whole session; triggered by LibreOffice dialog boxes (regression)

2016-05-09 Thread Cameron Graham
Encountering this problem after upgrading from 15.04 to 16.04, via
15.10. Have installed the oibaf nvidia driver with opengl 4.1 support
previously after initial upgrade to 16.04, but have since removed it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1549455] Re: Unity8-dash on Intel Pineview graphics crashes and restarts continuously [qtubuntu: ASSERT: "eglDestroyContext(mEglDisplay, mEglContext) == EGL_TRUE"]

2016-05-09 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Loïc:

Our findings appear to be identical. Basic rendering on Pineview
(including shaders) is fast and smooth till I used trig functions in
shaders (mir_demo_client_eglplasma).

I doubt Unity/Ubuntu toolkit uses much trig, but it probably hits some
similarly expensive functions.

Expensive functions aren't the problem with the dash though. The dash
never starts so that may be non-existent functions instead.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1575301] Re: GPU Hang [i915 / drm] crashes whole session; triggered by LibreOffice dialog boxes (regression)

2016-05-09 Thread Bill Eaton
I can confirm this on a fresh install of Lubuntu 16.04 on a relatively
new laptop. This bug effectively renders the laptop useless.

Libreoffice crashes X regularly (!) and hence is not usable. When I look
at /var/log/syslog the culprit is always something like:

May 9 20:55:54 kermit kernel: [ 46.807723] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode
7:0:0x85fffdfc, in Xorg [812], reason: Ring hung, action: reset
May 9 20:55:54 kermit kernel: [ 46.809807] drm/i915: Resetting chip after
gpu hang

This seems to be a well known problem with the i915 driver. I've tried
some of the fixes that people suggest (adding various i915 options to
grub like i915.enable_rc6=0 i915.semaphores=0 i915.modeset=1
i915.use_mmio_flip=1 i915.enable_ppgtt=1). But so fare nothing works.
