[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1070677] Re: Xorg fails to start because of Radeon Issue [(EE) RADEON(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version]

2013-04-14 Thread Josep Pujadas-Jubany
Thanks!

With your recommendation I had the following idea:

Ctl+Alt+F1

login

sudo start ligthdm

Ctl+Alt+F1

logout

Ctl+Alt+F7

It works. I did'nt need to modify grub. And the trick is only necessary
when xorg fails at startup.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033263] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nvidia drivers

2013-04-14 Thread Hein
If it's an old card installing version 173 from Nvidia may help to stabilize
your system. Performance is not great though, but it helps with my 12.10
version. Hope 13.04 will be better.

Subject: [Bug 1033263] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nvidia drivers

I can confirm this on 12.04 LTS and also on 12.10 with a very fresh
install of ubuntu.

Its absolutely regardless which nvidia driver i activate (current,
current-updates, experimental) the desktop freezes randomly with ativated
nvidia driver.
Sometimes the system freezes complete, desktop, mouse and keyboard are stocked.
Sometimes only the keyboard and desktop freezes. and i can move the cursor but
are not able to make the dekstop response do any kind of mouse interacting.

If i change back to NV driver the system runs stable.

Also this only happens the very first boot on the day. If i restart my system i
can run it for hours without any problem.
For now i have deactivated the nvidia drivers, hopefully someone can fix this.

I also can confirm (but im not sure) that this must have to do with
unity as im running a dualboot system with 12.04 LTS and Ubuntu Studio
12.10. On Ubuntu Studio which uses XFCE the system runs stable with the
latest nvidia driver activated.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1134492] Re: xserver-xorg-lts-quantal breaks Kubuntu

2013-04-14 Thread Malte S. Stretz
No, I can't test it because I upgraded by now.

I reopened the bug because I think the official wiki page
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/LTSEnablementStack should get a big fat
warning that the recommended command can completely brick your
(K)Ubuntu. I also ran into bug 1168859 which rendered my touchpad
useless. (That might be due to the alternative apt solver though).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1166916] [NEW] temperature overheating of cpu and radeon in 12.10 and above

2013-04-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

13.04 Ubuntustudio 64 bit

under moderate load temperature is around 81c

under high load (playing video inside a virtualbox) temperature hit
94c at which point I turned it off

I have tested this with all 3 of the radeon drivers, with no significant
difference.

The radeon temp is always about 2-3 degrees hotter than the rest, so
suspect that is souce of problem.

10.10 does not have this problem at all
12.04 runs 5-10 degrees hotter on average than does 10.10

but starting with 12.10 the temperature gets unusably hot

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168900] [NEW] Xorg crashes after suspension with Mesa 9.1.1-0ubunt0.3

2013-04-14 Thread Carla Sella
Public bug reported:

Using Mesa from ubuntu-x-swat/x-staging PPA Xorg crashes everytime I suspend my
PC.
This is my hardware: http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/CarlaSella/lshw.
When I suspend my PC, after pressing the power button to resume from suspention
I get a black screen an PC is stuck, can only reboot.
I tried two time, the first time:
- suspended
- pushed power button
- got a black screen with only a white mouse pointer, could move the mouse
pointer
- I could go to terminal pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 and return to the black screen
with CTRL+ALT+F7
- aftere like 3/4 minutes got lighdm logon screen
- logged on
- got a black screen, this time could not go to terminal with CTRL+ALT+F1 had
to reboot pressing CTRL+ALT+CANC
- after rebbot I saw a crash file in /var/crash and reported the but with
apport, but it was automatically reported and go no bug number in retrun to
tell you.

The second time:
- suspended
- pushed power button
- saw Ubuntu orange backgruound with unlock screen, tried to enter my password,
but was unable, it was as if the keyboard di not work
- after a while I was presented with lightdm logon
- logged on but got a black screen with mouse pointer but could not do anything
but reboot pressing power button
- after reboot a crash was automatically reported, have no bug number.
The strange thing is that I have only one crash file in /var/crash even if Xorg
crashed twice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1166916] Re: temperature overheating of cpu and radeon in 12.10 and above

2013-04-14 Thread codeslinger
very curious... per irc with Kaj...

on 12.04 64 bit UbuntuStudio

installed 3.8.0-18-generic kernel which was backported for testing purposes.
see: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/r-lts-backport

over-all result is that this kernel is running about 6 degress hotter
than 12.04 with the stock 3.2.0-39-lowlatency kernel

contrast this with 13.04 running the 3.8.0-17-generic kernel, which is
about 15 degrees hotter at 100% load and 20 degrees hotter at idle...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1166916] Re: temperature overheating of cpu and radeon in 12.10 and above

2013-04-14 Thread codeslinger
P.S. it was not a totally apples to apples comparision because in the
process of installing the kernel I ended up switching the video driver
from the amd to the xorg. but the results should be pretty close given
that in previous tests on 12.10 I so no significant difference in
temperature between the different drivers.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168900] Re: Xorg crashes after suspension with Mesa 9.1.1-0ubunt0.3

2013-04-14 Thread Carla Sella
** Description changed:

- Using Mesa from ubuntu-x-swat/x-staging PPA Xorg crashes everytime I suspend
my PC.
+ While using Mesa from ubuntu-x-swat/x-staging PPA Xorg crashes everytime I
suspend my PC.
  This is my hardware: http://wiki.ubuntu-it.org/CarlaSella/lshw.
When I suspend my PC, after pressing the power button to resume from
suspention I get a black screen an PC is stuck, can only reboot.

  - saw Ubuntu orange backgruound with unlock screen, tried to enter my
password, but was unable, it was as if the keyboard di not work
  - after a while I was presented with lightdm logon
  - logged on but got a black screen with mouse pointer but could not do
anything but reboot pressing power button
  - after reboot a crash was automatically reported, have no bug number.
The strange thing is that I have only one crash file in /var/crash even if
Xorg crashed twice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1168967] [NEW] no video after upgrading kernel, mesa, libc, and several other packages

2013-04-14 Thread Greg Ward
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1) on 2013-03-31, shutdown laptop for a 2-week vacation
2) on 2013-04-13, return from vacation, boot laptop, and apply pending updates
with update-manager
3) reboot laptop

Expected result: Ubuntu boots just as it did before the update (it
worked fine on 2013-03-31, and then again on 2013-04-13 before the
update)

Actual result: no video (black screen) -- no splash screen, no kernel
log messages (which are normally suppressed anyways), no login screen,
nothing. Just blackness.

This is a Lenovo ThinkPad T500, which is slightly unusual in that it has
two video chipsets, one nVIDIA and one ATI. I'm quite sure I disabled
the nVIDIA chipset in the BIOS for the obvious reason that nVIDIA +
Linux = pain. (But I did this when I bought the laptop in Sep 2012, and
have not checked the BIOS settings recently. Will do that soon.)

If I boot into recovery mode, things are a bit different. For starters,
I get the traditional kernel boot logs that are normally suppressed by
Ubuntu, but they're all in 80x25 text mode (I'm used to seeing a high-
res text console, presumably at the screen's native resolution). Then I
get the "Recovery Menu". The "root" option works as expected, i.e. I get
a root shell in 80x25 text mode. If I select "failsafeX", at least X
starts with a warning dialog: "The system is running in low-graphics
mode". That's as far as I get; the failsafeX mode appears to have
several unrelated bugs, which I'll report separately.

(I just grep'ed for "status: installed" in /var/lib/dpkg.log.)

I don't think the kernel is at fault: I've tried booting into recovery
mode with 3.5.0-26 (which was running before the update) and 3.5.0-21
(the oldest kernel still on this machine, from Dec 2012) and got the
exact same behaviour.

I don't think mesa is at fault: I dug up the 9.0 packages (shipped with
12.10 release), downgraded to them, and still have the same behaviour.
(The actual upgrade from was mesa 9.0.2 to 9.0.3, but I couldn't find
the 9.0.2 packages on archive.ubuntu.com.)

I haven't tried downgrading any of the other upgraded packages. If
anyone can suggest likely candidates to downgrade first, I'm all ears.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-04-14 Thread christian aichert
People...

I am tired of all this 12.04 problems...
It freezes all times long.
My PC is working very slowly.
I tried for weeks to solve the prolem.

At least I thought maybe better with Windos...

I remembered how great the performance was with Ubuntu 10.04...and than I
simply installed
it again...

kicking out this stily looking but very unpractible 12.04 with such a
kind of problems that I think ubuntu should kick it out and go back to
10.04...

Now I am writing this with my system running well, fast, all grafik
aplications work well and with NO FREEZE absolutly...!!

People :
