[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-17 Thread darkkhaine
I also have this bug with ubuntu 12.10 64 bits, mint edition, and an ati
r5770. This bug usually happens after a long period of idle, i never had
this freeze while doing cpu intensive applications for example. The
freeze is a complete lockdown, no mouse or keyboard, and the screen
freezes at once, no black screen. Also, when i was listening to music,
the music keeps on playing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2013-02-17 Thread bloozguy
MY PROBLEM IS SOLVED: (#697)

My freezes were complete. No mouse. No keyboard. No activity. No ping. Only
way out was a hard boot.
The freezes happened within an hour or two, sometimes less.

I loaded a fresh copy of the new 12.04.2 I guess the quantal kernel this has
"fixed" things.
I have been up and running for at least 12 hours now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1066464] Re: Xserver Crash in 12.10

2013-02-17 Thread Johannes Thoma
Hi, I've seem to have the same problem here: Graphics card is:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS]
661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter

Setting NoAccel to on works around the issue, but videos are very slow
and flash isn't working (including youtube), I managed to create a core
file, would that help? I don't have the debug-enabled binaries for X so
I can't analyze the bug yet. Pinning the sis-driver to precise didn't
work because xorg-video-abi-11 is required for that.

I agree that the hardware is rather old (around 12 years or so) but it
worked with older Ubuntu releases.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 950587] Re: Update to bug #944626

2013-02-17 Thread Mark S
Thanks Chris. To get such comprehensive help is a real boon for someone
like me who's not very knowledgeable about such matters.

I copied and pasted into a terminal the commands you kindly posted, and
didn't notice any errors being thrown, but when I checked with Synaptic,
xserver-xorg-video-intel is showing as version 2.15.901. I thought it
should be higher, or am I missing something?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-02-17 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Nick Andrik, would you please queue up the new driver that works
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx into
the Proposed repository for fglrx-installer-updates? You may want to
connect with Alberto Malone on this one.

Marking Triaged as not assigned to anyone, and nothing queued up in
Proposed. Marking Status High as this has a moderate impact on a large
portion of Ubuntu users. By moderate it is ment that as in while it is
initially angst inducing to not be able to use Quantal with fglrx-
installer/fglrx-installer-updates, one could still use FI/FIU in
Precise.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-02-17 Thread Nick Andrik
I think the intel driver is out of this bug and should be marked as
invalid.

The solution relies in the fglrx driver. I have tried the 13.2beta3
driver and it solves the problem.
If we don't want to go for this version, a Suse user on the
corresponding attached bug, reported that also 13.1 is ok.

I have already packaged the 13.2beta3 version here:
https://launchpad.net/~andrikos/+archive/xserver/

Should I also prepare an official branch to propose for merging to
quantal-proposed?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 950587] Re: Update to bug #944626

2013-02-17 Thread Chris Wilson
No, there is a slightly more complex procedure to rebuild the actual deb
package for -intel so that it is listed correctly by synaptic. This
simply replaces the intel_drv.so used by the Xserver, and will be
overwritten the next time the package is updated. (I prefer this for
users as I see this as only a temporary hack that should be fixed in the
long term with an updated .deb.)

To verify the driver was installed correctly, 'grep -C2 intel_drv.so
/var/log/Xorg.0.log'. That should say 2.21.2 rather than 2.15.901.

2013-02-17 Thread Chris Wilson
That confirms that pageflipping is the direct cause of the hangs. Very
recently suspicion has been raised that the gen4 pageflipping irq
handling may be racy - which would help explain why all the reports of
this hang I've seen so far have been gen4.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1001550] [NEW] LibreOffice Calc causes high CPU usage in Xorg when displaying "marching ants"

2013-02-17 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

To reproduce (on my system):

1. Run LibreOffice calc (I had imported a CSV with 3 columns and about 300 rows)
2. Select any cell
3. Press Ctrl+C to copy
4. "marching ants" selection appears

At this point, Xorg is now using 100% CPU on one of my processors.
Clearing the selection (by typing in another cell) clears the "marching
ants" selection, at which time CPU usage returns to normal.

This survives a restart of the application, or a reboot. Same issue will
occur.

Running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64-bit on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61, 4GB RAM,
NVIDIA Quadro 140M running the proprietary nvidia driver. All drivers,
software, BIOS, etc. are at latest versions.

2013-02-17 Thread Nukeador
Same problem here, Ubuntu 12.10 64b, macbook pro 6,2, nvidia GT330M

I've tested nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates and the two nvidia-
experimental drivers.

Same problem, blank screen+full system freeze.

I've tried both solutions described here with no success:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/235760/unity-does-not-appear-after-
installing-proprietary-nvidia-drivers-gpu-has-falle

I've increase fans speed to see if this coudl be a heat problem.

I use the GeForce 6200 Nvidia card on two Ubuntu computers (12.10 and

machines for viewing HDTV. Your output seems to indicate that although
nvidia-current is installed it's not activated.

I have re-installed the nvidia-current driver after trying the open
source driver and it again is super slow. glxgears gives about 3 fps.
I can watch video fine as well.

What does glxgears give you?

X.org fails to start with Segmentation Fault if EXA acceleration is

It works fine with XAA in both 16 and 24 bit modes.

The hardware is Lemote Fuloong2F (Loongson2 little-endian MIPS CPU).
So it is possible the bug can be MIPS-specific.

According to a comment in
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=9611, SiS driver EXA
support was broken at some point. Is it still not supposed to be
working?

Can't believe this has been reported 2 years ago and there isn't even a

dropping things out and not so good in creating working things.

So, this is to confirm: the bug is still there, wild and furious.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1126002] Re: Ubuntu 12.10 Nvidia (Geforce G210m) Fail

2013-02-17 Thread j b guldmand
Here is a little update on how i disabled intel card and fixed the bug
(wtith x / nvidia-settings) ...

This should be done from a terminal without a gui running so either do it via
1) recovery mode > terminal as root or 2) logout > alt+ctrl+f1
..if a sudo command isnt accepted run it as root with gksu (or gksudo)

1)Changed (downgrade) kernel to supported version (i do it using grub since my
linux-headers-3.7.0.7-generic is not supported by nvidia drivers yet)
2)Remove all existing nvidia drivers // using sudo apt-get purge
3)Disable Intel gfx in bios (on my asus ul30vt its done by changing IDE
CONFIGURATION to "compatible")
4)Install nvidia driver (i chose nvidia-current-updates, but any driver will do)
5)sudo update-alternatives –config gl_conf
6)sudo ldconfig
7)sudo update-initramfs -u
8)Configure your xorg.conf
9)sudo nvidia-xconfig
10)Reboot

And ubuntu will boot up with nvidia gfx running, showing a "NVIDIA
SPLASH SCREEN" just after userlogin!

So Dave Lentz, it could be done without bumblebee, although I must say it was a
bit harder than just reinstalling bumblebee.
The check i mentioned, was something like this:
("I'm not really sure what hardware check you're referring to and why it would
check the laptop vendor.")
//I do this by memory so it may not be 100% correct

enable: nvidia-current-updates
...
INFO: enable nvidia-current-updates

Imo it should be an option to disable the intel card totally via a
terminal command, to force the accept of the nvidia-xconfig since
everything works perfect the second the intelcard hardware isnt detected
by the system

:)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1128315] Re: I don't Know

2013-02-17 Thread Edward Donovan
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

2013-02-17 Thread celiapgt
Hi, I'm not that techie as you are. But try hard.

I experienced the same crash when clicking on working area in Inkscape.
After I read what you had reported about a possible connection between
the touchpad and this bug, I disabled the touchpad-indicator that
freezes my touchpad. Then I started Inkscape, and no crash of Xorg.

I also have a laptop (Toshiba Satellite C845).

12 hours isn't long enough to declare this bug solved, i have gone 4-5
days on one of the 3.8 kernels without a freeze and i thought it was
solved but then it happens.

I'd say if you go a couple of weeks without a freeze then maybe it's
solved,keep us posted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1068404] Re: Low graphics mode in muxless hybrid ATI/Intel GPU systems after fglrx upgrade

2013-02-17 Thread Nick Andrik
** Description changed:

  [Impact]

   * Hybrid systems with ATI/intel GPUs using fglrx get a segmentation
fault in X when using 12.10. In stock 12.04.1 these systems were working
  fine.

   * This bug represents a severe regression from precise to quantal,
  since is crashing on startup

-  * The proposed patch reverts the following upstream commit which has
"hidden" some global symbols of the intel driver:
-
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel/commit/?id=05dcc5f1699ba90fc14c50882e8d4be89bc4a4f9
+  * The proposed patch updates the driver to version 13.2beta3 of
+ upstream which seems to resolve this issue

  [Test Case]

   * Get an hybrid ATI/intel system.
Install quantal: The system should boot fine
Install the proprietary fglrx package and reboot: The X server crashes on
startup

  [Regression Potential]

-  * Although upstream has stated that reverting this patch should be safe
enough (mainly Comment 7):
- it seems that it can cause X server to crash if radeon/intel system is used
(without fglrx). This is a regression for the default configuration so the
proposed patch is not suitable for SRU
+  * This solution does not need any change on the intel driver (as a previous
workaround needed).
+ * No regressions have been reported so far using this most recent fglrx
upstream, from the people affected by this bug

  ==

After installing the latest fglrx-updates package on Ubuntu 12.10
(fglrx-updates_9.000-0ubuntu3_amd64) I have the same issue that was
present before AMD fixed switchable graphics on PowerXpress 4.0 cards
(such as my HD 6470M coupled with the intel HD Graphics 3000 of my intel
Core i5-2430M). The X server has a segmentation fault and the low
  graphics mode is activated.

WORKAROUND: Follow carefully the instructions here:
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI#WORKAROUND

As per Nick Andrik, this is a version regression of xserver-xorg-video-
intel from 2.20.2 (working and in below mentioned PPA) and 2.20.3. The
  regression commit is http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
  intel/commit/?id=05dcc5f1699ba90fc14c50882e8d4be89bc4a4f9 .
+
+ Upstream fglrx has published a new version (> 13.1 ) of the driver which
+ seems to solve this issue. No need to revert the commit in the Intel
+ driver any more.

  ATTENTION:
  1. If you choose the integrated GPU (via Catalyst or via amdconfig --px-igpu)
and your X server crashes on startup, then your are probably affected by this
bug:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1088220

  2. If your system includes an old ATI GPU card (Radeon HD 2x00 3x00 4x00)
which is not supported any more by fglrx drivers, then probably you suffer from
this bug:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer/+bug/1058040
  Subscribe and comment there please.

If the X server loads (so you see no low graphics mode window) but you get no
menu bars, window decorations, etc, then press Ctrl+Shift+T to open a terminal,
write in there:
  unity --replace &
and post a comment with the result.

screenshot of xorg background corruption, plymouth corruption is similar but
moving around

When booting linux with 3.2, 3.5.5 or 3.6 and drm-next (other versions
untested) the initial framebuffer shows small pieces of horizontal
corruption on plymouth and Xorg. This lasts until Xorg completes
loading. If you get lucky and the lockup recovery is succesful Xorg
works normally afterwards, but the background image is still corrupted
until it is changed.

I might add that the screen corruption is permanent and doesn't recover
at all in my case (Bug 60981). Also, it flickers all over the screen
when moving the mouse, playing a video etc. (see the video linked in Bug
60981).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1128801] [NEW] Adding second graphics card causes infinite reboot loop for Ubuntu, but Windows boots.

2013-02-17 Thread Alexander Dorokhine
Public bug reported:

I have a motherboard which is able to use both the integrated graphics
card and a dedicated graphics card at the same time.

The integrated graphics card is an RS880 [Radeon HD 4200] with two
outputs, powered by the foss radeon driver. To this I am trying to add a
PCI-Express NVidia Quadro FX (I think it's a Quadro FX 3450).

Windows 7 boots fine on this configuration and is able to use both cards
concurrently (one monitor attached to each card). However, Ubuntu enters
an infinite reboot loop with this configuration. The Live USB has the
same problem. I was able to boot it into recovery mode, but was not able
to start X from this configuration (lightdm hangs with a black screen,
and 'startx' says my user account is not authorized).

When I configured my BIOS to use only the Quadro FX without the
integrated card, Ubuntu booted fine using the nouveau driver.
