[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 997075] Re: XOrg uses 100% CPU after upgrade to 12.04 and freezes computer

2012-07-20 Thread Stuart Bleeden
I have the same issue. I think it has to do with the Nvidia 8 series, because I
have a Nvidia 8800 GTX.
I tried the proprietary driver packages, didnt help. I then tried to manually
install the latest driver via Nvidia's website. Again, didnt help.
I have only tested it using XFCE, but I suspect the same under Unity. I really
am only affected when doing anything requiring any "special effects" such as
from Cairo-dock and switching workspaces. I also have compositioning enabled
to allow a proper transparency on my conky.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 997075] Re: XOrg uses 100% CPU after upgrade to 12.04 and freezes computer

2012-07-20 Thread edvar
I haven't used Unity for months because of that. My fix so far is using
Gnome Shell with a couple of useful extensions and a different theme. I
got used to it and haven't had any crash since. It's unfortunate because
I really liked Unity but now I'm a Gnome 3 convert... Haven't looked
back

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 926917] Re: Mouse wheel tilt not works

2012-07-20 Thread vkulkov
I am confirming this regression on my Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64 with MS
Wireless Laser Mouse 5000, evdev version 2.7.0-0ubuntu1.2. The left and
right mouse tilts cause up/down scroll, firing 4/5 according to xev
instead of 6/7. The mouse wheel tilt is therefore not usable anymore in
the newest Ubuntu LTS. It's quite annoying.

xserver-xorg-input-evdev 2.3.2-6ubuntu3.1 that is part of my Ubuntu
10.10 installation does not have this problem on the same hardware.

I would be happy to downgrade to 2.6.0 that appears to work fine according to
the previous reports here. However, I can't get 2.6.0 for Precise since it was
published for Oneiric only:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-evdev/1:2.6.0-1ubuntu13

Hmmm, Interesting.

Mean while Dell is promoting Ubuntu:

"Linux comes to ultrabooks: Dell to preload OS on XPS 13
The open-source operating system is going to land this fall on one of Dell's
best ultrabook offerings."

http://news.cnet.com/8301-1001_3-57476335-92/linux-comes-to-ultrabooks-

May be Dell users can get better Ubuntu support from Dell?!!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1024750] Re: Calibre crashes the window manager on start-up

2012-07-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
No; it's not an X crash. "X error" messages are due to the client (or
window manager) making improper X calls.

You can use the xtrace utility to study the communication between the
client and server to diagnose where it's making the wrong call.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 962892] Re: [snb-m-gt2] Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __assert_fail_base() unless clear compiz/unity settings

2012-07-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
libdrm intel_bufmgr_gem.c has:

if (IS_GEN2(bufmgr_gem->pci_device))
bufmgr_gem->gen = 2;
else if (IS_GEN3(bufmgr_gem->pci_device))
bufmgr_gem->gen = 3;
else if (IS_GEN4(bufmgr_gem->pci_device))
bufmgr_gem->gen = 4;
else if (IS_GEN5(bufmgr_gem->pci_device))
bufmgr_gem->gen = 5;
else if (IS_GEN6(bufmgr_gem->pci_device))
bufmgr_gem->gen = 6;
else if (IS_GEN7(bufmgr_gem->pci_device))
bufmgr_gem->gen = 7;
else
assert(0);

The crash is occurring because it's hitting that final assert. However,
the intel graphics video card is a GEN6, and -intel is loaded on the
system. However, there is a second (unused?) video card on the system.
Presumably the code that retrieves the pci device id is getting the id
for the wrong card?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-20 Thread weimin
Hi, everyone. I am here to provide a solution. this solution may work,
may not work. I am not a pro bug dealer, and I tried to trace the
freeze, but no outcome. just make me more furious about my new pc.

I have inter i7 core, 12 processors, each one 1200 MHz. Geforce 210 1GB DDR3.
now the system is ubuntu 11.10, and kernel 3.3.0.

I have tried many method to stabilize the freeze, which has no reactions on
keyboard and mouse. so I have to reboot from hard disk every time. Also, I had
dual system, with Windows 7 alongside. And I had the feeling that it was so
related to the driver conflicts with graphic itself. Because the freeze
happened every time when I try to browse. And it was very worse when I use
YouTube. if some one had experienced the same, you could try the following.

Replace Firefox by Chrome.

I have used it for one day with 20 webpage working at the same time, no
freeze

There's your problem. The kernel is loading the nouveau kernel driver,
but X is using intel.

Did you attempt to use vga switcharoo to turn on your nvidia card? If
you did, undo that.

Otherwise, you need to blacklist nouveau.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 962892] Re: [snb-m-gt2 + GF106] Xorg crashed with SIGABRT in __assert_fail_base() unless clear compiz/unity settings

2012-07-20 Thread Bryce Harrington
I've updated the description with some troubleshooting steps.

Looking at some of the dupes, people are hitting this same assertion but
with different system configurations. I would suggest everyone follow
the troubleshooting steps first.

If toggling in BIOS does it, then there's not much we can do on the
software side, at least for Precise.

However, if blacklisting the incorrect kernel driver solves it and makes
Intel graphics stop crashing, that may be of interest to the kernel
team. Undupe your bug report and update it with your findings, and
we'll go from there.

** Description changed:

+ [Problem]
+ An assertion is hit in drm_intel_bufmgr_gem_init. We've had about thirty bug
reports with this error. X crashes with this stack trace:
+
+  __GI___assert_fail (assertion=0xb6f2df80 "0", file=0xb6f2e5ac
"../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c", line=2783, function=0xb6f2ebb7
"drm_intel_bufmgr_gem_init") at assert.c:103
+  drm_intel_bufmgr_gem_init (fd=-1, batch_size=16384) at
../../intel/intel_bufmgr_gem.c:2783
+  intel_init_bufmgr (intel=0xb85cfe08) at ../../src/intel_driver.c:409
+
+ The assertion appears to be catching a condition where the pci id does
+ not match any known intel chip generation. Yet (in most cases),
+ Xorg.0.log shows the system is indeed running on INTEL.
+
+ However, the system has two video cards. Either it's a hybrid (such as
+ in this case), or it has an add-in card.
+
+ [Troubleshooting]
+ 1. Run `lspci -vn | grep VGA` and verify that it shows two video cards.
+
+ 2. Look in your /var/log/Xorg.0.log for mentions of which X driver is
+ being loaded. The lines look like this:
+
+   [16.675] (II) RADEON(0): blah blah
+
+ 3. Run `dmesg | grep drm`. The messages will talk about whatever kernel
+ driver it is loading up.
+
+ 4. If dmesg mentions anything about "nvidia" or "fglrx", you have the
+ proprietary video driver installed, and probably should uninstall and
+ purge it first.
+
+ 5. If it is discussing "nouveau" or "radeon", then the kernel is trying
+ to load the wrong driver. Do any one of the following:
+
+a) For hybrid graphics: In BIOS look for a setting to disable the
+ second video card and use it.
+
+b) Blacklist nouveau and/or radeon in your
+ /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

The stack trace here doesn't give us sufficient info to figure this bug
out.

What we need to know is exact steps to reproduce the issue on our end.
Can you (or anyone on dupes) identify steps that reliably reproduce the
crash?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 889212] Re: LibreOffice window resize corruption

2012-07-20 Thread Nathan Hawks
Fully solved for Debian 6 Squeeze - There is now a libreoffice-gtk
package. Installing it, and restarting libreoffice, fixed the behavior.
By the way, I too am using Xfce.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1027290] [NEW] cannot configure display on boot

2012-07-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I configured nvidia for twinview (2560x1024) and on rebooting got the message
"could not apply the stored configuration for monitors" with a long list of
possible
settings, and then just one of the two monitors works. Reconfiguring nvidia
again
results in two identical screens.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 948053] Re: nvidia-96 and nvidia-173 uninstallable on Precise

2012-07-20 Thread Dave Stroud
I pined down nvidia on the 96 driver. They have no desire to do
anything to update or maintain this driver, nor or they interested in
allowing any one else to fix it. Is it possible that the open source
driver could be made to work.I have tried the latest mageia release with
same kerrneol as 12.04 . It shows my card as a nv11 which is what
12.04 shows as an open sorce. driver. It works great. Just a question.
thanks

tried searching for that bug with the same title, the bug number, and

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1021035] Re: black screen after waking up the screen

2012-07-20 Thread Amos Blanton
Same issue.
Tried to use ubuntu-bug to collect my system info to post on this thread. But
when I searched for a similar issue, this one would not come up. I had to make
a duplicate and then mark it as such. Apologies if that's not best way to do
things.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1027325

I should stress that this is an intermittent bug. I haven't been able to
determine factors to consistently reproduce, but it happens to me about
every other day, with an average of about 12 wake / sleep cycles per
day.
