Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
I found 8.10 to have a stable ati enviroment. Been a slippery downhill slope from their for ati users = Sent from my mobile, so apologies if it seems short and to the point. On Oct 25, 2009 12:40 AM, "Zega" wrote: Hey guys. I'm going to be just a little bit off topic, but it seems that this is the only place where this critical issue is being debated. I'm disappointed not to find any reviews (along with suggestions) of this issue on any tech site. I've discovered Ubuntu right when Jaunty came out, and to my (un)luck, i have a Toshiba laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 2600 HD. So i have the same problems as you guys. I applied the backfill patch, but soon got fed up with the still-sluggish environment, and the difficulty in doing routine tasks that require more than just a bit of video power (tabs, IDEs, videos etc) , that on Windows were not a problem. So i decided to put Ubuntu for a nap until it was properly fixed. I had it as a second booter, but mainly used Windows and reguraly checked for updates on this issue.. Now, after a very nightmareish night of trying to install Visual Studio, that ended up tearing down the whole syhen stem (i'm not a beginner but this is ridiculous), i've decided to leave leave windows behind and make the best out of a linuxbased OS. The problem is, i really really wish this issue would go away. I know i can simply disable desktop effects, but that doesn't mean that i have full videocad support, and the system will still lag when i need it the most. That's why i invested in a better laptop after all. So what should i do? Is this problem persistent throughout other linux distros? Is Debian or Fedora or another one free of this bug? Or can i successfully go back prior to Jaunty, to an older version, and not have problems with all the new apps? (i'm scared by the thought of constantly having dozens of New Updates that i'm not allowed to touch) I need alternatives, and i apologise if it's off topic, but i really did not find what i was looking for anywhere else. -- [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled https://bugs.la... -- [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351186 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460297] [NEW] [i855GM] Xorg freeze during installation and live CD
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Can't install or run live CD of Ubuntu Karmic RC. During installation X freezes at 2nd or 3rd step. During live CD session system hangs after few seconds/minutes, after I have clicked on something. I managed to disable desktop effects and it still freezes. I assume it's X crashing because it's almost identical (possibly duplicate) to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/447892. However I can't even install the system from Desktop CD. Jaunty would crash frequently too, even after workarounds from forum (newer kernel, Xorg swat/edgers etc.). It didn't crash so quickly though, anyway still using Hardy. Mouse pointer still working after freeze, keyboard locked (no Alt+F1 or CapsLock), SysReq+Alt+K closes X but can't restart it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460315] [NEW] [i915][Karmic-RC] gdm crashes in a loop after fresh install
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Just installed Karmic from RC desktop CD. Install goes fine, the live CD boots and X works with no issues in the install process. Once the install is finished, we go for first reboot. All seems normal until GDM tries to load. At this point in time, I get the mouse cursor and sometimes de loading icon, and the screen looses signal and the same thing starts over again in an infinie loop. At a guess, I'd say xorg crashes when launched by GDM. Immediate consequence is that I can not finish the install of Karmic on this machine (that's using ubuntu since years) so it's critical. If I trigger it just before gdm tries to load, I can get into a terminal. I've tried successfully to run 'startx', there Gnome loads up. All attempts to restart GDM result into the same infinite loop. Since the i915 module doesn't seem to be correctly loaded, I tried Insmod like this : insmod -f /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko. Returns error "-1 Unknown symbol in module". modprobe i915 returns a Fatal error : "Error inserting i915 (/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko): No such device. No, that's not the same issue here. Running from the live CD, it freezes right after desktop shows, even before I can move the mouse. Grungekid, I'm sure you can get some help at http://ubuntuforums.org. At bugs.launchpad.net we focus on improving ubuntu by getting rid of bugs, and this particular bug report is completely unrelated to your problem. That being said, you seem to have a valid bug and we would appreciate if you would report it. However at this time, we need to know that this is still a problem in the latest development version. If you install the release candidate now (or the final version soon), you can report the problem to the package xserver-xorg-video-ati. See https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=no-screens for a few bug reports for similar problems. Make sure you attach the files /var/log/Xorg.0.log, /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if it exists), and the output of the two commands `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397617] Re: brightness no more working on karmic (KMS)
Brightness keys (Fn + arrow up/down) are still NOT working on my Samsung NC10 despite latest daily updates from Update Manager and using latest Samsung BIOS version 04CA / MICOM version 11CA. (Brightness keys work while in BIOS (F2 key while power on), but you do not want to reboot the computer to adjust display brightness.) Using the nomodeset parameter in GRUB forces the brightness keys to work (didn’t work some weeks ago when I tried that for the first time). But I really liked Kernel-based mode setting, so it would be slightly disappointing to use nomodeset to turn it off. Of course, non-functional brightness settings are a bigger hassle than screen flickering, so I am forced to nomodeset. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI
I've made some tests, here are the results: test#1) I've booted up my most current Karmic with default options (ro splash in grub.conf) and then I switched to tty1 and stopped the gdm with "sudo stop gdm" command. After that I ran "sudo pm-suspend" command. My notebook went to spleep, but it couldn't wake up at all. Just a blank screen appeared and I couldn't switch to another tty. The LED of the caps lock key was blinking. test#2) I've booted up the same system with "ro text" options in the grub.conf. I didn't do anything special, just took a look at the output of the "lsmod | grep ati" command. I realised, that ati_agp is loaded. After that, I ran the "sudo pm-suspend" command. The notebook went to sleep, and surprising, it was waken up successfully when I pressed the power key. :-) After it waked up, I started the Gnome with "startx". When the Gnome was started, I switched to tty1 and stopped it with "sudo stop gdm" command. I ran "sudo pm-suspend" and my computer went to sleep. But after that, it couldn't wake up, I had only a black screen and a blinking caps lock led, such as in test#1. :-( I hope this informations could help to fix this bug.
