[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399613] [NEW] Can't enable 'zaphod mode' with intel X server

2009-07-15 Thread Wade Bowmer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

The intel X server driver no longer supports separate X screens on
multiple outputs (so called "Zaphod Mode"). This is a regression error
as previous versions of the driver supported this.

What can we do to convince upstream (i.e. Intel) to add this back again?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398026] Re: [GM45] Default 60Hz display mode drives LVDS incorrectly

2009-07-15 Thread Oded Arbel
I also am not seeing corruption issues with the kernel update (I checked
before and after and the kernel update indeed seems to be the reason).

The screen still changes refresh rate when going into and out of
docking, but now all modes look fine.

Steve, I've forwarded the bug upstream to

they're going to want to have a bit more info.

I am still not 100% sure this is actually an X bug, or something in
gnome, but we'll assume it's X for now. I would have thought one of the
recent -intel changes for EDID handling would have already fixed it, but
I guess not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398183] Re: intel driver seems to have lost tv output quirk

2009-07-15 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Andreas,

Actually... does the TV1 output cause any significant problems for you?

It is not a-typical for the driver to support outputs that the video
chip supports but that the chassis is not wired up for. So long as the
phantom output doesn't cause bugs, it is probably not something we need
to worry about. This likely changed in the code revisions accompanying
moving the mode setting code into the kernel.

still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at

system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this

I built the git HEAD last night and ran some tests:
* without "Virtual" in xorg.conf everything seems to work fine (no change)
* with "Virtual" in xorg.conf I tested two cases:
** Virtual 2960 1065 -- gdm would not start, and it seamed stuck in a loop
trying to start the x server
** Virtual 2048 1065 -- gdm would start, but the image on the screen was
destroyed (thin lines from the images dispersed over the screen), BUT the mouse
pointer was displayed correctly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392531] Re: [R580] Black screen with artefacts after boot

2009-07-15 Thread Markus
I downloaded the newest (14.07.2009) Karmic iso with kernel 2.6.30-8 but
I still get a black screen when booting from the CD. After I installed
with save graphics mode and removed xorg.conf I again get a black screen
with a garbled mouse pointer.

After doing a dist-upgrade (kernel 2.6.31-2) I tested with the options
  Option "DRI" "off"
  Option "NoAccel" "true"
  Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
but they had the same effect as above.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 360724] Re: [RV516] Kubuntu: Corrupted mouse cursor after moving between screens

2009-07-15 Thread Jean-Paul
This isn't an Ubuntu-specific issue: I use Kubuntu 9.04 with kde 4.3rc2
installed from the backports, and it doesn't happen there.
However, at work I use a Debian squeeze machine with kde 4.2.2, and there it
happens quite often, which is incredibly annoying. So maybe it would be a good
idea to explicitly work with upstream on this one?

I did just find a workaround (for kde4):
start krandrtray, and set the refreshrates of your monitors to 75 Hz.
There'll probably be an equivalent thing for gnome.

  --- Comment #7 From Keith Packard 2009-07-11 09:33:45 PST ---
I've pushed driver fixes for this to master in patch:

d655a3ff423e69c19a5dc07140cbf3caaa32cb86 Remove NoAccel support.

There's an associated fix necessary in the kernel to bump the framebuffer limit
from 2048 to 4096 for KMS which should land shortly.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21190#c11
  --- Comment #11 From Gordon Jin 2009-07-14 19:09:47 PST ---
I've seen the kernel fix in drm-intel-next:
drm/i915: Allow frame buffers up to 4096x4096 on 915/945 class hardware

And verified 945GM works with the fixes for both KMS and UMS.

In xf86-video-intel it should be fixed.
But xorg-edgers does not have the fix in repository.

I'm too lame still to compile my own kernel, so would here be some good
soul to update kernel in xorg-edgers? :)

BTW, to make it clear:

You did not hear from me again, because I do not have the machine any
more. I have a small IT company and I sometimes sell Linux machines to
customers.

I usually can't easily do tests after giving them out of my hands.

So, not hearing from me does not mean the bug is fixed for me.
In this special case, IIRC i just made a workaround by using the slow
VESA driver, which was good enough in that case.

2009-07-15 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Chris and Oded, it's good that the corruption is gone, but the frequency
should not change sporadically as at least Oded is reporting. Unless
told otherwise, the driver should choose the frequency of the preferred
EDID mode, and as far as I can see this is 50 Hz for Chris and 60 Hz for
Oded. It would be nice if you could help troubleshooting this even
though the corruption caused by the wrong frequency is gone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392410] Re: [MIR] UNR packages

2009-07-15 Thread David Planella
Just for the record, as talked on IRC, I contacted upstream about
contributing changes to provide gettext support:

1) Code changes

• Add gettext support in the code
• Replace the string ID's in the code by the English strings
• Wrap all those strings in _() so they can be extracted by xgettext

2) Migration changes

• Write a script to do a one-time extraction of the existing
translations in the xml files under the data/resources directory and put
them into separate gettext .po files. With this we would ensure that the
existing translations are used.

Something to have into account are their contribution guidelines ->

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392410] Re: [MIR] UNR packages

2009-07-15 Thread Kyle Nitzsche
There are a couple other aspects to i18nizing fbreader.
 * On launch, fbreader displays an e-book that is fbreader's help/introduction.
This is in English even if the user has switched the user interface to another
language. This could be translated and code could be written to display the
version that's the best match with the current locale.
 * The UI interface contains widgets for setting the language. This
could/should be removed and be replaced with normal automatic locale detection.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399746] [NEW] DRI fails to initialize when KMS is enabled with radeon driver

2009-07-15 Thread Alex Wauck
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-radeon

When booting with radeon.modeset=1, KMS works, but X refuses to use DRI due to
a version mismatch:
[dri] radeon.o kernel module version is 2.0.0 but version 1.17.0 or newer is
needed.

When not using KMS, DRI (not DRI2) initializes correctly.

It looks like the kernel module supports DRI2, and from what I have
heard, there was at least some DRI2 support for radeon GPUs under
development in November, so it ought to be here by now. I have not
tested with the xorg-edgers PPA.

At the very least, the error message should be changed so that it does
not claim that 2.0.0<1.17.0.

I am running Kubuntu 9.10 installed from Alpha 2, up to date as of July
15.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398183] Re: intel driver seems to have lost tv output quirk

2009-07-15 Thread Andreas Schildbach
Hello Bryce,

acually it does not cause any significant problems right now.

However, back then when the TVout quirks were collected and implemented,
it was the general consensus to not present the user any outputs that
are not existing.

That said, if it was decided to drop the TVout quirks altogether I
respect that decision and would withdraw this bugreport. If the quirks
are still there and just my hardware dropped from that list, I'd regard
this as a bug and would like to have my hardware re-added.

** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-intel (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 357908] Re: [i965] X freezes every ~24hr while scrolling in firefox (EXA/UXA)

2009-07-15 Thread Dave Neary
I am running 9.04 but I don't understand from this bug whether I should
still be experiencing this bug or not. I can confirm that I am
experiencing it, though. I got an X update a few weeks ago for which I
had high hopes, but I still get freezes when scrolling in X (with
Javascript usually, like say Twitter).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399782] [NEW] [karmic] High CPU use on Acer Aspire 4530

2009-07-15 Thread Asif Youssuff
Public bug reported:

High CPU use on Acer Aspire 4530 -- this causes the computer to overheat
and eventually turn off.

I saw the master Xorg high CPU thread, but didn't see much in the way of
how to find what was causing the high CPU, and I hadn't seen this
behavior previously, so I'm reporting it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399829] [NEW] display corruption when moving desktop windows

2009-07-15 Thread Alex Pearson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Running Ubuntu Karmic Koala Alpha 2,

Latest from ubuntu-x-swat as of 15 Jul -
including xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.7.99.901+git20090702.74227141-0ubuntu1
(karmic)

Running on HP nx7400 laptop, intel 945 chipset

Having installed these latest updates, have seen a new bug - on graphic
movement like moving a desktop window around, the display will flicker
and appear corrupt. Corruption stops when movement stops.

On the native laptop panel resolution of 1680x1050, several refresh
rates are shown of 60Hz, 70Hz, 75Hz and 85Hz. This corruption does not
appear at all at 85Hz refresh, but appears at all other refresh
frequencies.

I tried installing the latest drivers from the xorg-edgers repository as
of 14th Jul, but this driver only provided me with a 1680x1050 60Hz
option which always corrupts display on movement, so I have returned to
the ubuntu-x-swat repository for now, but having to run at 85Hz.

2009-07-15 Thread Martin von Gagern
Starting with Jaunty, people seeing this "Error activating XKB

their home directory. Error messages from xkbcomp will end up there, and
others might as well. Maybe the information from these files can be used
to differentiate the huge number of bugs duped here, and identify the
actual causes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363672] Re: Kubuntu Jaunty 64 bits hangups often with nvidia-glx-180

2009-07-15 Thread trelayne
[SYSTEM: Ubuntu Jaunty 32-bit, 4GB RAM, nVidia Quadro FX 770M -- 512MB ]

Hi again all,

after some research I'm wondering whether I might be dealing with two problems,
both fixable by tampering with /proc/mtrr :

(1) the way main memory is allocated to my graphics card:

 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 (Intel specific, but may
apply for other
 manufacturers)

Look at the MTRR stuff specifically. A technique for fixing /proc/mtrr
settings
is found here (i.e. using "write-combining"):

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+bug/314928

(2) following material above, I found that the memory reported by lspci is
different
from what I see in /proc/mtrr (256MB versus 512MB). Could this be related
to my problems?

2009-07-15 Thread what-a-strange-man

I've tried everything in this post, and a thousand others to no avail.
I believe I can confirm that this issue relates to the display.
I am writing this on my laptop using an additional display,
while my inbuilt TFT display just shows purple and white splotches.

Unfortunate I can't try the switch to uxa rendering, when I do so I can't login.
Can we get onto this one it's a real problem. :(

2009-07-15 Thread Axos
I installed 185.18.14 (using the link provided by Bryce Harrington
above) and have observed scrolling problems in the OpenOffice Word
Processor when "Visual Effects" are set to "Normal" (the default
setting). Setting "Visual Effects" to "None" works around the problem.

I wrote a small Python script to generate a test text file to load in
OpenOffice (redirect the script's stdout to something like "lines.txt"
and then open the file in the OpenOffice Word Processor):

from __future__ import print_function
for i in range(1000):
for j in range(6):
print('line', i, end='\t')
print()

After loading that text file in OpenOffice, I paged through the file
using the PgDn key on the keyboard. When the window was drawn
incorrectly, I captured it with gnome-screenshot. I am attaching some
examples.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399559] Re: ATI Radeon Mobility KMS modeset=1 22% slower than vesa

2009-07-15 Thread jerrylamos
Attached is spreadsheet giving results from Radeon Mobility 7500 GtkPerf from
Jaunty, Vesa, default (no modeset), radeon.modeset=1.

The modeset=1 was re-run with yesterday's updates. Modeset=1 was 24%
slower than Vesa. Will try today's updates when time permits. Since
I'm just a user (customer) seems to me Vesa would be better to use than
the driver with "accelerations".

Today's karmic update might be 2.6.31-3 however boot hangs after samba
on the i845 ThinkCentre so I'm not sure the update is ready yet.

Subsequent attachments will be lspci -vvnn, Xorg.0.log, dmesg.

Thanks, Jerry

I could reproduce it with Karmic. Attached are Xorg.0.log and a
screenshot.

The procedure was: boot karmic, disable laptop minotor with gnome-
display-properties and enable 1600x1200 on VGA connected monitor. I also
tried to boot with montor unplugged and plug it in. Unsurprisingly both
yielded the same result.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378668] Re: Cursor in terminal behaves badly with special characters present

2009-07-15 Thread Rolf Leggewie
I can also confirm this for the current gnome-terminal from Karmic.
This makes me suspect it is not a bug in either of the two but in a
commonly used library (vte?).

My first hunch was that this may be a problem in vte, even more so after
going through the dependencies of gnome-terminal and xfce4-terminal.
But after reading through the vte bug tracker and confirming that this
problem also exists in xterm which does not use libvte, I came to the
conclusion it must be somewhere else.

I'll add gnome-terminal and xterm as being affected now although I don't
think the bug itself is in either of those packages.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393623] Re: Can't play multimedia video (i.e., *.ogg, *.flv, *.wmv) when external monitor is connected

2009-07-15 Thread Shannon VanWagner
Bryce,

I've tried booting to Karmic Alpha and am able to run a .wma video
(after installing ubuntu-restricted-extras of course) but only when my
two displays are set to "mirrored".

So as soon as I try to "extend" my desktop onto the second monitor by
unchecking 'mirror displays' in System>Preferences>Display, the tool informs me
that config files have to change and I have to logout/back in.
The problem now is that once I logout, the screen goes black, and the login
screen never reappears (but there is the Ubuntu theme sounds).

So when this happened, I tried switching to run level 3 and then running
the apport-collect command, which then connects me to
launchpad via the lynx web browser (which I installed previously) only
to find out that this process does not appear to work with Lynx.

I even tried copying in my older xorg.conf file and using the startx
command to try to get video, and nothing... the screen is backlit-black.

So I've attached a few files from the /var/log dir and the xorg.conf
file for your perusal.

Needless to say, since I was never able to log back in with non-mirrored
screens, I was not able to test to see if the videos work.

Any suggestions?

Thanks a lot!

This is not a bug with the package, but rather with you NFS setup.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399829] Re: [i945GM] display corruption when moving desktop windows

2009-07-15 Thread Alex Pearson
Wow - such comprehensive log file info on #36 - I will know how to
do it for next time! :)

Just to confirm on my nx7400 HP machine, the 1360x768 resolution also
works fine and is flicker free, and 1440x900 resolution does exhibit
flicker, just as you have described in the duplicate report.
