I haven't bought a handset on contract for more than 5 years now. I have a SIM-only contract with 3, and got my last few handsets from amazon or eBay. There are about a dozen others in my office who do the same. But then we are gadget geeks! I've now got a Nexus 4 and a nice loyalty contract from T-Mobile that I will convert to a SIM only deal next time it comes around, which will certainly work out cheaper than an 18-month contract with phone. Downside with the Nexus is that it's a sealed unit so if the battery starts to go it may shorten its life but there are a lot of interesting phone projects coming along, not least the Edge or whatever gets made, that will make combined contracts less essential. s/ -- Twitter: @sfgreenwood "TBA are particularly glib" -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] phonebloks
Just came across this new phone project: their website is currently offline but this is their promo video: http://youtu.be/oDAw7vW7H0c The obvious question was whether the platform would be open to the OS, and if so, it strikes me as something that Canonical could get behind. s/ -- Twitter: @sfgreenwood "TBA are particularly glib" -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

I get my handsets from Three. They come with about 1 app and once Android is rooted you can remove it or put a custom ROM on. I also benefit from quick, easy replacement of the handset should something go wrong, rather than dealing directly with the manufacturer. Just my 2 pence. And, me too. Step 1: Buy handset for cash. Step 2: Replace crappy default OS with CyanogenMod or whatever I like at the time. Why would I accept a device, at any price, that's crippled to work with one network and loaded with crapware I can't delete? Those are valid points. Although I think many of us have not experienced this "quick, easy replacement" program with other providers. :) I don't buy my handset from the manufacturer, although I'm aware that some people buy Google handsets directly from them. I usually use eBay or Amazon for my handsets.
