[ubuntu-uk] Delete menu item in Quantal ...

2012-07-11 Thread Barry Drake
Hi there 12.04 and previous had a preferences menu item in
Nautilus. Among other things, this allows the setting of a delete menu
item as well as the 'move to trash' item. In 12.10 Quantal, this seems
to have disappeared. Anyone know if this should be reported as a bug?

Regards,Barry.

Yes, it's just been spotted this morning. As it's a java applet the simple
answer is to increase the security settings in your browser or not to let
Java applets run without permission. There are very few around these days
anyway. I have to run a few for remote consoles but they tend to download
rather than run and I manually start them from javaws.

A simple use of Java to achieve this, can be fixed by using NoScript
or other script blocking apps.

That or disabling Java. The only thing it's good for nowadays is
Minecraft and Cisco's ASDM.

You are right, Edit > Preferences appears to be missing in Nautilus in
Quantal. I will search for a bug report. In the meantime, however,
if you hit Alt to bring up the HUD and type preferences then it finds
it, but as a top level item rather than under Edit. Not sure what
that means. The "Include a Delete command that bypasses the Rubbish
Bin" option is on the Behaviour tab as before.

How do I check in Firefox that I have java disabled? I found links
that said to disable the java plugin in Tools > Addons > Plugins, but
I don't see a java plugin there.

@Barry: I could not find a relevant bug so have reported it [1].
Could you attach yourself and mark it confirmed?

Are you using unity-2d by any chance. I am but I would not expect
that to be part of the problem.

Is the HUD working ok for you in Nautilus on Quantal? For me it
hardly finds anything. I feel another bug report coming on.

This is the first time I've actually made the HUD do anything useful at
all! I've logged on and confirmed the bug. Thanks. I have to admit
that in 12.04, I wasn't finding the HUD very helpful at all. OTOH the
dash seems to find everything, and I especially like the filter menu in
the apps lens.

If I want to permanently delete a file in Nautilus, I just highlight it and
press Shift-Delete (same as in that other OS). Very wisely, it asks for
confirmation before it does delete it. I assume that this will work in
Quantal just as it does in Precise.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Malware targeting Linux.......

2012-07-11 Thread Ivan Wright
Blackhole exploit has been doing the rounds long enough, and my Ubuntu
system got infected last November back when Adobe Flash was vulnerable.
I found with Wireshark that my computer was beaconing out to a Polish IP
address, fortunately I had a full disk backup from a few days before so I
just flattened my system and restored the backup.

The majority of these Java exploits cause massive resource usage on the
browser and cause it to damn near crash. So they put a simple message on
the screen like "Please wait while page loads"
After its done exploiting your system they dump you back on Google, so you
think nothing is wrong and carry on as normal.
If you've ever seen that your computer may have been infected.

My job is a Network Security Analyst and I monitor a very large network.
This year I've seen Blackhole migrate from Adult sites to pretty much
run-of-the-mill sites such as: Holiday, Car, Shopping, Wordpress, and
Family history websites.
Its no surprise these malware/viruses would progress further as exploit
paths get patched.

I don't like running NoScript as it turns your faithful Linux system into
an annoying little brat like Windows - always asking you questions instead
of just getting on with the job.

My preference is to use OpenDNS and do Top Level Domain (TLD) blocking.
I've set mine to block:
.info - Information
.cc – Cocos Islands
.cn - China
.vn - Vietnam
.cm - Cameroon
.in - India
.ru - Russia
.am - Armenia
.tk – Tokelau
.pl - Poland
.co.be – .co sub-domain in Belgium
.co.tv - .co sub-domain in Tuvalu
That small list ends up blocking the vast majority of malicious websites.

Heres a video I did showing how to setup OpenDNS in Ubuntu:
