[ubuntu-uk] Live flash disk image installing extra packages
Hi If I boot a live session using a flash disk, and install software, for future use, if I then install from that flash disk will it install the additional software i have installed at the same time, I amn asking as my local youth centre has really locked down internet and I want to try and install ubuntu / lubuntu along with some extra stuff such as ruby, python, python-pygame, scratch etc, from a live session type install without having to worry about installing after wards through a filtered connection as this will fail (tried it it blocks stuff) so boot live session - install and job done all additional stuff installed. just then a case of reboot and put things were they are needed. Or should i be using ubuntu / lubuntu studio for this, ? Once you install onto a USB key it's just like running off a hard disk, just slower. Easiest way to do it is have two USB keys. One containing the Live installer and a blank one. Boot to the Live key and install onto the blank one. Once done you have a full system on a stick. Works a treat. Just be sure during the install that you put grub on the right device (i.e. not the Live stick and not the internal hard disk). You can then boot off the new stick and install whatever you want. You could then duplicate that stick as many times as you need for however many computers you have. > Or should i be using ubuntu / lubuntu studio for this, ? > No. Cheers, - -- Alan Pope Engineering Manager Canonical - Product Strategy +44 (0) 7973 620 164 alan.p...@canonical.com http://ubuntu.com/ -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.11 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iQEcBAEBAgAGBQJPtRuhAAoJEMx6UFtfvV4wweoH/RpOko2QXBlNBLhbfFHys20N nOWK7KlMWT6Tx+01qH4BC62YcQ6mbUMWgy2J2NAeR+VzpSHqz5O/cuufjLdWYk7+ Vz5AV9Gw+6zNUJlDsICIIU4T6qRPKwFw74159hz/up+VD19/S64INHOWXpBz4fIF okKSAMuTcDY8k+e02bMVAi5WZnhXiq4ecWPPQJM65A2JaXjt/3wDvanEPKBmpUZR J4TyNx8xw9xdr+64cJYRCw32hiIP/2/dgaNdmSScMsakB8zYywHJRIOIg8a8ayn+ NopTi6dgNA3MGtDmotbZH5Gm1+Vqije27eamNz/OBwfT7hgmMMT3s6snJArDb4U= =RiVF -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] apt on cd
Hi Am i right in thinking the idea behind aptoncd is to create a local (say on cd or usb stick) apt repository ? that I can then point a netbook at and have it install from there (use software sources to point at the cd or usb stick) where the deb files etc are. or perhaps copy the contents of the usb stick to the actual netbook and install that way ? thanks Paul -- -- http://www.zleap.net http://www.ubuntu.com skype : psutton111 http://www.linkedin.com/pub/paul-sutton/36/595/911 -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Had a play looks great(if a bit slow) I just went from 10.04 to 12.04 using command line "do-upgrade -d " or something similar. i did not know i had to wait until july for LTS to LTS upgrade. I had some windows pop up during installation with empty rectangles instead of text pop up I guessed i was accepting and it continued to install ok. It now has 12.04 it seems to have defaulted to unity 2d just fine (no graphics card). It's a bit slower (the laptop is dual core but only <512ram) but i hope the owner will not mind. Upgrade took less than 3hrs. I hope to show off new OS some time this weekend in a cafe. I'm sure all will go well! I just have to manage not to drop coffee.-- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] Quantal ....
Im looking forward to 12.10, sadly like every other .04 release I've used 12.04 has been a flop. Pity because during development it was absolutely fine, but post release its been crashing daily and I've had to fix quite a few little things that came out of the box working in 11.10. Adding the x-updates PPA really improved things, but I've hit that point in thinking I might aswell go back to 11.10 where things worked instead of having to fix another problem in 12.04.
