Re: [ubuntu-uk] contents ubuntu-uk Digest.(Problem}
Dear Ubuntu UK; I have lost my most fantastic distro of Ubuntu that I have ever put together. Over 150 working apps. Everysingle thing up to date and I was running Ubuntu 8.04 and the overall size of my lost Ubuntu OS. was 42.3gb so as you can imagine I am quite upset and all that I did was upgrade my distro on my desktop using every single one of the many instructions that I have on upgrading. This has happened to me over ten times on as many machines and I simply now will not upgrade any system as every singe time I do the full re-haul it goes pear shaped so now I am starting from scratch using Kubuntu 8.04 and I am simply not going to upgrade radically ever again. Many thanks, Peter Lawrence Boyd -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Scrambled screen
Hi Greg, To try and address your original problem: Do you get any errors displayed when your screen scrambles? Try dropping to a terminal by pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 Log in Type in tail -n50 /var/log/Xorg.0.log Look for any lines that start (EE) These lines and the ones directly before and after should give enough information to diagnose what the issue is. Alternatively, an easier way might be to start up using the live CD, mount the file system of your hard drive and open the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log You can probably then copy and paste the log to this list. [ubuntu-uk] Question about System Monitor
Ubuntu 9.04 in a WUBI install on a Toshiba L40 Satellite with 2GB RAM and duo core T2330 1.6GHz processors. If I launch System Monitor, the CPU %age on the Processes tab (viewing All Processes) is nothing LIKE as high as the CPU %age shown on the Resources tab. The Resources tab shows both CPUs constantly round the 50% mark - even when the Processes tab only shows about 10% of CPU being used. Why is this, or is there something basic I have missed? -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/

Upgrading on release day is sometimes a bit hit and miss, and a lot of people will recommend waiting a few weeks. If you could let us know what problems you encountered, or indeed, file a detailed bug report, then it will help the distro improve. You may also be interested in this https://wiki.ubuntu.com/AufsBasedUpgrades which should be coming in properly in the next (or next +1) release. The Aufs based upgrades allows you to do a "test" upgrade, and if you experience problems, roll back to your previous install. The other thing that might be worth considering is sticking to the LTS releases. While you won't get the new shiny so fast (release every 18 months?) these releases are far more stable and tend to have considerably less problems. If you do experience upgrade problems again, don't simply reinstall, ask on here for help with problems or drop onto IRC and nip into #ubuntu or #ubuntu-uk and ask for assistance, people there are usually more than willing to give up their time to help. Not helpful in mending the problems you had in the past I know, but hopefully we can help in the future. -Matt Daubney signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
[ubuntu-uk] Laptop webcam for Jaunty
Can anyone recommend/suggest a webcam that can be clipped to the top of my laptop that will work out of the box on Jaunty? I'd want to use it with Skype. LTS release is every two years, in April (x.04). Although 6.06 was delayed because of stability issues. All seems sorted now - thanks for the help. I am so tired I can't remember what I did to fix it, but yesterday evening the wireless popped up and I now have a wonderfully efficient Jaunty Laptop!! *cue fireworks* :-) Thanks Sean -- ubuntu-uk@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-uk https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UKTeam/
Re: [ubuntu-uk] Installing Ubuntu using wubi on Vista Home machine.....
I managed to install the virtualbox on my laptop. I have got it to work, and its updated ok. The only thing is at the moment, the size of the window is really small, only about the size of a netbook. I have tried everything to get it bigger, and nothing is working. Is there a way to increase the size? Even if you go full screen, it only shows the small window. Plus, what I have on the wubi install, is there any way I can transfer it ver to the VirtualBox, so that I dont loose anything? Or have to install all the repositories again. John. John. [ubuntu-uk] Installing Font
Open Office 3.1 on Ubuntu 9.04 Does anyone know how I can install the MS Font Monotype Corsiva? It doesn't seem to have been installed using the MS Core Fonts installer, and my wife, whose company laptop has this font as default sends me docs that don't /quite/ render properly because of this. I vaguely recall having to do something on Virtualbox, but my Windows 7 now auto-scales to fit the window/screen.
