[Ubuntu-manual] Saucy Salamander
Hi, my name is Craig, and I have been obsessed with Ubuntu and GNU/Linux for about a year and a half. In that time, I've spent most of my free hours testing development releases of Ubuntu. Though running test-cases and fixing an occasional bug or two can be rather stimulating, I want to commit myself this cycle to having a very active role in the Ubuntu Manual. Though the Ubuntu Manual is always amazing, I think that it also suffers from lack of contributors at times. I'd like to assist in authoring and editing for this current cycle. When will work begin on the manual for the current cycle, and what areas of documentation need the most work? I am willing to assist in any way possible. I have read the documentation at www.ubuntu-manual.org; I am familiar with bzr and launchpad, so I'm interested in when work should start for the saucy manual. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-manual Post to : ubuntu-manual@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-manual More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Very nice. Hope to hear from you soon. Craig On 04/29/2013 02:53 AM, Hannie Dumoleyn wrote: Hello Craig, Welcome to the Ubuntu Manual Project! We are always in need of new authors and editors, so we are very glad you want to become a contributor. Patrick has already answered your email, but here is some additional information. Ideally, we want each chapter to have at least one author and one editor. Huge chapters, like the Ubuntu Desktop and Working with Ubuntu are divided into sections which each should have an author/editor pair too. On this spreadsheet (1) you can see how it works. Now as for Saucy, we will start as soon as possible; you will be informed through this mailing list. Welcome aboard. The fact that you had to ask what a simple phrase meant sort of proves why it shouldn't be written in that way. On 05/28/2013 07:41 PM, Patrick Dickey wrote: It's easy to miss. The author probably thought it sounded right (which being an idiom aside, it did). The editor probably didn't think anything of it, because they understood what was meant. And the proof-readers probably thought the same thing. In other words, while it should have been avoided, it's a "no harm, no foul" type of thing. And this also serves to show that even if it's missed most of the way through, it will get caught eventually (most likely in the translation phase). Have a great day.:) Patrick. When someone is trying to get help using Ubuntu, language barriers shouldn't be a source of difficulty for readers. I entirely agree with Kevin and Craig's remarks. It is exactly what I had in mind in my reply to Hannie (which should have gone to the list - apologies for that). There is even several distinct forms of English to consider. It is possible for me, as a UK English speaker, to use idioms that sound odd to US English speakers, even if they do understand them. So our aim should be always to use plain, straightforward English that can be understood by native and non-native English speakers. I have made a few edits along these lines, but I have to confess to missing the expression that Hannie queried. I do not think that idioms can always be completely avoided by a native speaker, as one does not always know when they are using words that aren't clear and correct English, but simple phrases and expressions from our culture. However, if anything, it shows the importance of good editors. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-manual Post to : ubuntu-manual@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-manual More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
