Wrong analogy. The ebook was published by someone (or some company)
and there is no mention about it being freely redistributable.
FOSS is about sharing but not something which is not owned by you or
when you don't have license for sharing.

[ubuntu-in] adding user problem

2007-03-11 Thread Pramod Tantri

Hey guys i'm kind off getting hold of Ubuntu now..

I had a question.. while installing Linux i used user name other than "root"
. Now when I try to add user i'm unable to do so. If i try SU command on
terminal it asks me for the password and I just have one user on the system,
it doesn't accept that password.

Can someone help me..? or can you tell me where I need to look for more
info..?

thank you in advace.

You don't need to be. But there's one good thing you
can do. Post the solution with the problem too. It may
be of some help to someone like you, in the near
future ;)

[ubuntu-in] Introduction

2007-03-11 Thread June Bug

Hi folks, my name's June (aka Sneha). I jus added myself to the Indian Ubuntu
list.. I've been on the Linuxchix list for over a year now. I've used SUSE
9.3/10.1, Fedore core1 and 5 along with Ubuntu 5.10 and 6.1. I personally like
Ubuntu a lot cause of its interface and user friendliness. I've been using
Ubuntu for about 7-8 months in and out now.

As for the academic front, I am a second year BA (English literature) student.
I hope I can contribute in some way or the other to the Ubuntu community since
I admire and appreciate Linux and Open source a lot. :)

Thanks and cheers!
June :)

yep true

Just that while the discussions on the ebook were on it struck me that
this was one question i had been wantin to ask - to clarify

FOSS yes but the question still is about the proprietory stuff - the
difference i guess is that a. the proprietory drivers, etc are not
licensed as open source - even if they are freely distributable

[whereas in the case of the book it is not freely distributable (and nor
is it open source)]

thanks

Yup, you got it right this time. :)
Just that in the case of proprietary h/w driver stuff u only need them
if you 'purchase' the hardware. So here comes the difference between the
vendors which support Linux(with proprietary drivers) and those which
support Open Source.

Re: [ubuntu-in] adding user problem

2007-03-11 Thread shashi hv
Hi,
You should give user name other than root only otherwise you will
not be able to log on. But for me if i do SU and i gave same password
as i entered while installing linux, it gave the root privilages. ANd
then i opened the 'users and groups' utility from the menu. There i
changed the root password and then i changed the properties as well
from the last tab for root. After that you have to go to log on
peroperties, there you have check the box for administrator logging
in.
This is a quite a long method. I donot know any methods. I figured
out on my own. I was able to log in as root and do all other things.

Regards,
shashi
