Installing arbitrary .deb files on a system can lead to a broken system
and is not recommended for this reason, as you discovered. You should
stick to installing software from the software center only. Anything
else risks the stability of the system, and you'll be at the whim of
whomever is giving you instructions to do something else.

I understand that power users typically do install from other sources,
and recommend others do so. You've just discovered why, in general, this
is a bad idea :(

A level of sanity checking does get done automatically, but only
_against the Ubuntu release the .deb was released for_. As far as I can
tell you grabbed a .deb from a future release and tried to install it
into a previous release. That's the part that is not supported and no
sanity checking is done for that.

What specific version? 18.x is not a valid version string. 18.04 or 18.10?

Doing things as root is dangerous, yes. You can't blame a package for ...

... ignoring information you admit you read.

Did you mean 18.04.1?

that's how you install packages.

Doing *unsupported* things as root is doubly dangerous.

If you did indeed mean 18.04.1 above, then you are installing a package not
intended for your distribution by-hand.

In any case, I did exactly what you claim to have, and installed kitty and
kitty-terminfo from the debs built for 18.10 on 18.04 and no packages were
removed.
