Really cool, but probably not really performant. Some people do multimedia
work, and this sort of thing would kill their audio & video recording
throughput.

That's a variation on Raskin's First Law of Interaction: "A computer

Someday, perhaps, they'll be nicer.

There is something to be said for your proposal, if we keep in mind
the "do no harm" approach, but then you would need to do that for all
such commands. That is a long and slippery slope to head down.

Yes, that's probably unworkable without a long-term effort between
Linux and Unix distributors, on something they probably wouldn't
consider important.

Perhaps when a user launches a terminal for the first time, a dialog
pops up that says something along the lines of:

Commands entered within a Terminal screen may not work as you
expect. Sometimes a command will overwrite files without warning
you. If you are unsure, use the 'man' command to find out.

Even better would be to print a similar message (it probably needs
rewording a bit) in the terminal itself when it is launched. Then it
would be more likely to be read, and it wouldn't require an extra click
to dismiss.

Perhaps you could start by investigating whether a Free driver that
works for other Lexmark printers
 could be
extended to cover the X6170 too. Either way, the OpenPrinting site is
probably the best place to get involved with driver development.

Good luck!

Re: Introduction and Lexmark Printer Driver

2007-05-18 Thread Till Kamppeter
Also welcome to the list.

As I already told on the IRC I am manager of the OpenPrinting project
and I also do printing stuff for Ubuntu.

Unfortunately, I have never done anything with the Lexmark Linux DDK, as
I do not have a Lexmark inkjet nor did I have to package the DDK for a
distro.

The reason why it is not in distros is that it contains closed-source
parts. HPLIP made it into all the distros quickly because HP decided to
release the whole thing as free software. So setting up HP printers
usually just works under Linux.

I appreciate your work on getting actual drivers with the Lexmark Linux
DDK. This will make many user's printers work. See all these posts of
users crying for a driver on the Lexmark forum on OpenPrinting (you
should post calls for testing there as soon as you have some code).

I will also look into whether your driver could be added to multiverse
in Ubuntu (but this probably needs permission from someone from Lexmark).

Can you post a link to the current Lexmark Linux DDK site? Thanks.

ReadyBoost Technology for Ubuntu and Linux

2007-05-18 Thread Chris Jones
I am rather impressed with the ReadyBoost technology that has been
implemented into Windows Vista. And providing you get an appropriate and
compatible memory stick to make good use of the technology, it actually
works.

Are there currently any plans to develop a similar technology for Linux?
Or to be more specific, Ubuntu?

If I have another partition on my Ubuntu drive which is in reiserfs
format, how do I read the reiserfs partition contents within Ubuntu?
