Configure dual screens
I've tested it but it always failed on X. It even crashed once, and reported it. I also sent the package to a couple of friends for extra tests. I'll keep my eyes on this app, as I really need a way to use an external TFT, and SVideo TV-Out on my laptop. Keep up the good work. Re: Configure dual screens
yeah ... same for me ! But as Sebastian said, it is still in early development stage ! So let's keep an eye on it until some improvments are done. -- Mehdi Dogguy http://dogguy.org GNU/Linux user #371248 -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
too much space around text
Hello! I am using GNU/Linux for several years now and like it very much. One issue I always disliked is the extensive space, windows managers require on the screen to display text. Because of this menus and windows become too big thus the screen looks crowded and confusing. It is the same with KDE and GNOME. For example, the GNOME panel on top of my screen is 24 pixel high. The entry "System" (which has upper case letters as well as a "y" which goes below the line) is 12 pixel high. This is 100% additional space over and below the text together. (Cp. attachment panel_menu_orig.png) For my opinion 2 pixel for example would be enough and result in a cleaner and thus virtually "bigger" screen because about 25% more information would fit on it. (Cp. attachment panel_menu_shrinked.png). This phenomenon is present whenever text is displayed. For instance the list mode in Nautilus could display much more entry without the wasted space. For example the file browser of OpenOffice.org displays four files/folders at once by default which makes it very uncomfortable to browse through a file system with more than ten files (Cp. attachment filebrowser2.png). MS Windows does this job better and therefore looks cleaner. Why not GNOME and KDE?! Also I could not manage to customize the space consumption in KDE or GNOME. Is there any possibility to change this behaviour? If so, why it is not changed by default?! Cheers, Markus PS: I am not speaking about the font size itself which is ok for me. -- Ubuntu-devel-discuss mailing list Ubuntu-devel-discuss@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel-discuss
Open Port Indicator?
I note on the sounder ML that someone (apparently) enabled Remote Desktop and forgot about it, and someone else attempted to gain access to their computer while they were using it: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/sounder/2007-March/010122.html Now, what concerns me is that once you enable Remote Desktop there is no Notification Area icon indicating that its active and so it can easily be forgotten about. Considering the problem further, this is not just a problem of Remote Desktop, but rather, how would the average user know if some program they installed was listening on ports? (I suppose if they went to Network Tools and port scanned their IP that would work, but that's not 'at a glance' :) Is there a program that makes a Notification Area icon to indicate if there are non-stealthed ports? This would be helpful as it would not be invoked during average usage and so would be a clear indicator that something was different. I've always thought that the option of just giving any user access without authentication is broken and should be removed. Something like what happened to this user was bound to happen sooner or later and I can't think up a use case that justifies its presence. IMHO that's a perfectly normal use case, so it should be possible to log in without local user intervention and removing that ability would be a mistake. In theory remote desktop should be no less secure that ssh. Both allow remote connection, both require password authentication and both can be encrypted. One allows command line access, the other graphical access. A notification area icon or applet indicating the current connections made is a nice idea though. Fwd: Seahorse and gnupg 2
Hello, I just want to forward this to Ubuntu. It's a script that makes it possible to load the .gnupg files in a storage media for use with Seahorse. So for example. students, office workers just have to save their .gnupg directory in a USB disk to use Seahorse. It's haven't been done yet*, and this is really interesting! * other than the autorun.sh in GVM -- Forwarded message -- From: William L. Thomson Jr. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Date: Mar 15, 2007 3:50 AM Subject: Re: Seahorse and gnupg 2 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] With the cooperative effort of several Gentoo developers. A gnupg-2 wrapper script has been created. We are using it in the place of gpg binary. We were symlinksing gpg -> gpg2 but now the wrapper script replaces gpg, so Seahorse and etc can call it. Here is a link to the script. Basically drop it in, and Seahorse works perfectly with gnugp-2. At least so far, hiccups or problems might be in the near future. But at the present moment, seems to be smooth sailing. http://dev.gentoo.org/~betelgeuse/gpg-wrapper -- William L.
