2)  While downloading acknowledged the restricted drivers notiification
3)  Authenicate as root
4)  Kernel crash

Chromium browser package was broken after a dist-upgrade.  Running Synaptic 
located and finished the download of Chromium.  However when I logged into KDE 
(since that   is  where the majority of the upgrades were) I encounter this 
 error.
Could be just taht the problem didn't "hit" KDE at  first.

The following code fro within the Ubuntu 12.10 VM (or Linux Mint 14 for
that matter) is:

echo "blacklist floppy" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-floppy.conf
sudo rmmod floppy
sudo update-initramfs -u

This immediately (don't need a reboot)removes the bogus floppy icon from
the launcher and also /dev/fd0.  You may also sudo rm -fr /media/floppy*
if you wish.
