how did you manage to achieve that? if im scrolling in playlist it still
seeks through the track. i installed precise daily-live 3 days before
release.

but not everything is matroska

installing gstreamer -vaapi from ubuntu repos breaks thumbnail generation in 
nautilus
furthermore acceleration does not work in totem - cpu usage is as high as with 
software rendering.

mplayer-vaapi works perfectly on the same system.

gst-launch-0.10 -v filesrc location=~/test.mkv ! matroskademux ! vaapidecode ! 
vaapisink
makes it possible to use vaapi via commandline

i did not find a way to use vaapi for mpeg4 part 2 video streams.

and i wasnt able to find proper values for gstreamer-properties that fix
thumbnails and acceleration in totem.

id like to share debug information. just tell me what you need.

well it gets better. h.264 avc still does not work but mpeg4 part2 does.
although it takes 5 times more cpu cycles to play the video compared to
normal rendering.

hesres my desktop file. just put it into ~./config/autostart. it should
be disabled by default and there schould be a switch in empathy to
enable the desktop file. ofc you can enable it via startup applications

lightdm 1.0.6-0ubuntu1.2

someday lightdm didnt work anymore. and at login the desktop hang for 30 secs.
completly removing and reinstalling does not fix the problem cause 
/var/lib/lightdm got wrong permissons on reinstall.
thats the first thing to fix.

gdd works fine. ill test dan upload logs soon.

video-sink=vaapisink  works again for mkvs and h.264

but the same line does not work for avi mpeg4 part2 (xvid)
and i dont know what to put as videosink in gstreamer-properties to use it as 
default for totem

i have installed openjdk 7 and icedtea-7 plugin. icedtea-netx is requiered for 
icedtea-7 plugin and 
icedtea-netx requieres opnejdk 6 jre and libraries although openjdk 7 is 
installed.

i cant remove openjdk6 without removing oenjdk 7 web browser support

are you referring to root share or usershare? root shares work properly
and they are meant to be done by fiddling with smb.conf

user share via nautilus does not work properly

private shares with password (its automatically your login password)
work.

public (guest) shares in the home directory dont work because samba
cannot cd into /home because /home defaul permissons are to strict for
"nobody" which is the guest/public samba user.

i had a long talk with the maintainer of nautilus-share. there are
several possible fixes.

1. set homedirectoy permissons for  "eveyone else" properly
2. add force user = owner of the /home/'your username' directoy to smb.con and 
map to guest = bad password

Via nautilus is usershare. Via smb.conf is root share. Try to set permissions 
of home to 755  and  make a share /home/public
If you make a public share samba uses nobody/other as user to change to that 
directory. Its the last digit of dir permissions that is used. You can see that 
if you run samba with debug level.
 But the best way is to use the smb.config edits from above the you can share 
folders in /home and external ext4 drive like i do.
