[Bug 305227] [NEW] screen goes black after a while with intel integrated graphics 945
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg After using the computer for anything between 15 minutes and a week the screen goes black and does not recover from it. Switching to another console (alt+F5) works and you can restart the x-server from there but it still only produces black output. Alt+F7 after alt+f5 also results in total blackness. It's a mini mac running Ubuntu 8.10. Previous version of Ubuntu was stable and never had this problem. lspci says this is my video card: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: macmini minimac xorg -- screen goes black after a while with intel integrated graphics 945 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/305227 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm John Squibb's observation. I upgraded from 8.04.3 to 9.04 two days ago and I have seen this behavior several times since then. [Bug 422102] [NEW] "Clear playlist" function in anyremote's amarok.cfg doesn't work
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: anyremote In the config file /usr/share/anyremote/cfg-data/Server-mode/amarok.cfg (for Amarok 1.4/KDE3, from package anyremote-4.17-1ubuntu1, Ubuntu 9.04) there's a definition for a menu entry which is supposed to clear the playlist, but doesn't. The specified DCOP command works correctly when I run it on the command line, but there seems to be a syntax error in the config file (line 146): Clear playlist=Exec(dcop amarok playlist clearPlaylist); After comparing this with other definitions, I changed this to Clear playlist($$)=Exec(dcop amarok playlist clearPlaylist); and voila, clearing the playlist works. [Bug 434511] [NEW] ALC861 : Mic does not work after installation
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: alsa-base Hi! I'm currently trying to get the mic to work an a friend's Toshiba A100. First I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and tried to record using audacity and the audio-recorder but had no luck. Then I upgraded to 9.10 (Alpha 6) but that didn't help. Within karmic, audio-recorder even crashes on exit and sound playback is a little bit choppy and strange noises occur when switching between windows or minimizing/maximizing them. However, playback works while recording does not. The weirdest thing about this bug is that is does NOT occur when using the live system! I tried both 9.04 and 9.10 A6 live CD and succeeded to record and playback my own voice using an external mic (there is no builtin mic). But after the installation the mic stops working! Because of that, I believe that it's a configuration issue rather than a bug within the driver. I commented out all options within alsa-base.conf (hoping to reproduce the settings from within the live session) but it did not help. Does anybody have some suggestions? [Bug 391114] Re: [karmic]snd_hda_intel: audio moves to polling mode and starts repeating (Toshiba A100-259/ATI IXP SB4x0 HD/ALC861)
I've filed a bug report today with a similar problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/434511 Although playback works for me most of the time (sometimes I had only background buzz and no sound at all), the mic only works when I'm recording from within a live session (using the 9.04 and 9.10 CDs). [Bug 391114] Re: [karmic]snd_hda_intel: audio moves to polling mode and starts repeating (Toshiba A100-259/ATI IXP SB4x0 HD/ALC861)
Since about an hour I have a new problem: no sound at all! It happened before I had the chance to change any options. Now I've appended "model=toshiba" (as suggested elsewhere) but it didn't help. However, I noticed that alsamixer doesn't show a control for the "Master" device (only PCM, Mic and Beep). And it also doesn't show any "Capture" devices (this is independent of the "model" option) although they seem to exist: a...@andicompi:~$ cat /proc/asound/devices 2:: timer 3:: sequencer 4: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback 5: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture 6: [ 0- 6]: digital audio playback 7: [ 0- 6]: digital audio capture 8: [ 0] : control a...@andicompi:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB HDA ATI SB at 0xd000 irq 16 And I also noticed two devices called "Caller1" and "Off-hook" that remind me of a modem. There is indeed a modem built into this laptop and "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0" shows this: Codec: LSI Si3054 Address: 0 Function Id: 0x2 Vendor Id: 0x11c13026 Subsystem Id: 0x11790001 Revision Id: 0x100700 Modem Function Group: 0x1 The ALC861 is in "codec#3". @Daniel : I also have that "switching to single_cmd" error in my dmesg now. Is there an option to choose the codec slot or interrupt? I searched the ALSA documentation but found only the "index" and "probe_mask" options that seem to be related to this problem. If you'd tell me which options I should try I would post my results! Currently, my alsa-base.conf looks like this: # Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0 options bt87x index=-2 options cx88_alsa index=-2 options saa7134-alsa index=-2 options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2 options snd-intel8x0m index=-2 options snd-via82xx-modem index=-2 options snd-usb-audio index=-2 options snd-usb-us122l index=-2 options snd-usb-usx2y index=-2 options snd-usb-caiaq index=-2 # Ubuntu #62691, enable MPU for snd-cmipci options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388 # Keep snd-pcsp from being loaded as first soundcard options snd-pcsp index=-2 # Power down HDA controllers after 10 idle seconds options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba -- [karmic]snd_hda_intel: audio moves to polling mode and starts repeating (Toshiba A100-259/ATI IXP SB4x0 HD/ALC861) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/391114 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 391114] Re: [karmic]snd_hda_intel: audio moves to polling mode and starts repeating (Toshiba A100-259/ATI IXP SB4x0 HD/ALC861)
I found a great guide on the HDA codec: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/docs/HD-Audio.html#_codec_probing_problem After reading it I realised that I experienced a "Codec-Probing Problem": the modem was asigned to the first codec slot while the "real" codec was assigned to the fourth slot. Therefore, I added "probe_mask=8" as an option and now I have sound! Furthermore, the devices in alsa- mixer are correct now: I have a capture device and can select Mic or CD as Input-Source. However, one problem remains: recording doesn't work! When recording with audacity, the time-slider doesn't move forward but is constantly flickering. And when using GNOME's sound recorder, recording stops immediately after starting it and the app crashes on exit each time. PA's "volume meter" for recording doesn't show anything either. I'm running out of ideas right now... One note: I had to remove the "model=toshiba" option. When it's enabled, the devices are also messed up within alsa-mixer (although in a different way than without probe_mask=8) and sound doesn't work! I hope that the "probe_mask" option will help you too! To check if you have a codec-probing problem, look at "/proc/asound/card0/codec* and see if the modem has a lower slot than the soundcard. [Bug 434511] Re: ALC861 : Mic does not work after installation
After talking to people in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source /alsa-driver/+bug/391114 and doing some search I've got some news on this. The option "probe_mask=8" fixed the problem with the crackling sound and the timeout errors from above, at least it seems so... Furthermore, alsa-mixer shows all devices correctly (capture devices were missing before). At the first glance, everything seems correct now... However, one problem remains: recording STILL doesn't work! When recording with audacity, the time-slider doesn't move forward but is constantly flickering. And when using GNOME's sound recorder, recording stops immediately after starting it and the app crashes on exit each time. PA's "volume meter" for recording doesn't show anything either. [Bug 354620] Re: Recording from microphone stutters when pulseaudio is running
Looks that the problem still exists. I have a Toshiba A100 with an ALC861 and recording only works during live session (with Jaunty and Karmic) but not after installation. And because audio settings have completely changed in Karmic, the workaround described above cannot be applied. Can PulseAudio even be uninstalled as easy as in Jaunty? It seems to be deeply integrated in Karmic... However, I've already filed a bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/434511 -- Recording from microphone stutters when pulseaudio is running https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/354620 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

When reading this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/354620 and this https://bugs.launchpad.net/netbook-remix/+bug/320032 it seems that the problem may be related to PulseAudio. Is PA indeed not active during a live session? I would test that, but I don't want to completely uninstall PA but deactivate it. Unfortunately, the audio settings in karmic are completely different and I found no way to change everything to ALSA. [Bug 27441] Re: Prevent extended periods of thrashing
This happens to me quite frequently. When it does, it starts in the morning at about 7 am, and I have no idea at all what's causing it. I don't have any cronjobs scheduled for that time. It started years ago, some time after I switched to using hard disk encryption. I've never seen the problem before that. Load goes up to 4 or 5, but when checking with "top", there is not one single process in the list which uses more than a few percent of CPU time. Most of the times "top" itself is the biggest CPU user. There has never been anything remotely interesting in the log files. The effects are like those of a fork bomb: In the beginning I can still issue some commands, but pretty soon the machine becomes completely unresponsive. It keeps answering to pings and all the routing seems to work, but I don't even get to SSH login any more. Sometimes the machine recovers after 30-60 minutes. When I need to use it, I have to power it off with the power switch. Any way, afterwards it works normally again, with no trace left of what had just happened. This phenomenon has persisted through several reinstalls of the OS, so I'm pretty sure it's not due to some rootkit infection. Also doesn't seem directly related to any HDD, since this has happened with various system drives I've had over the years. -- Prevent extended periods of thrashing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/27441 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 580006] [NEW] Headphone jack sense missing on Realtek ALC269
Public bug reported: It seems as though the channel for enabling/disabling headphone jack sense is missing for this card (looked for it in alsamixer and kmix, found nothing). There are separate channels "Headphone" and "Speaker". Both work as intended, I can change the volume and mute both channels independently and get the expected results. I'm just missing the functionality that the internal speaker is automatically disabled when a headphone is plugged in (and re-enabled when it's NOT plugged in). There's a mute button on the chassis (produces no key events with xev) which mutes the internal speakers, but not the headphone channel. When using this button to mute, the mixer doesn't show that the speaker is muted, though. The machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 (with the latest BIOS installed, 1.35-1.19). alsamixer reports the card as "HDA Intel", chip "Intel G45 DEVCTG". /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 says "Codec: Realtek ALC269". lspci says: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) I compared the contents of /proc/asound/card*/codec#* with and without a headphone plugged in: je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > no-headphone je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > headphone je...@tp:~$ diff -U 2 no-headphone headphone --- no-headphone2010-05-13 16:42:07.715206723 +0200 +++ headphone 2010-05-13 16:42:15.643206222 +0200 @@ -225,6 +225,6 @@ Node 0x20 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf00040: Mono Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=33 - Processing Coefficient: 0x227 - Coefficient Index: 0x0f + Processing Coefficient: 0xa100 + Coefficient Index: 0x10 Node 0x21 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono Node 0x22 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono These values are the only differences, but they seem to change all the time, no matter whether a headphone is plugged in or not: je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > no-headphone1 je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > no-headphone2 je...@tp:~$ diff -U 2 no-headphone1 no-headphone2 --- no-headphone1 2010-05-13 16:39:28.836209887 +0200 +++ no-headphone2 2010-05-13 16:39:31.360207130 +0200 @@ -225,6 +225,6 @@ Node 0x20 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf00040: Mono Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=33 - Processing Coefficient: 0x480 - Coefficient Index: 0x0d + Processing Coefficient: 0xb000 + Coefficient Index: 0x0e Node 0x21 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono Node 0x22 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: alsa-utils 1.0.22-0ubuntu5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Thu May 13 16:24:23 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100427.1) ProcEnviron: LC_TIME=de_AT.UTF-8 LANGUAGE= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: alsa-utils ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 lucid -- Headphone jack sense missing on Realtek ALC269 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/580006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 580006] Re: Headphone jack sense missing on Realtek ALC269
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: It seems as though the channel for enabling/disabling headphone jack sense is missing for this card (looked for it in alsamixer and kmix, found nothing). There are separate channels "Headphone" and "Speaker". Both work as intended, I can change the volume and mute both channels independently and get the expected results. I'm just missing the functionality that the internal speaker is automatically disabled when a headphone is plugged in (and re-enabled when it's NOT plugged in). There's a mute button on the chassis (produces no key events with xev) which mutes the internal speakers, but not the headphone channel. When using this button to mute, the mixer doesn't show that the speaker is muted, though. The machine is a Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 (with the latest BIOS installed, 1.35-1.19). alsamixer reports the card as "HDA Intel", chip "Intel G45 DEVCTG". /proc/asound/card0/codec#0 says "Codec: Realtek ALC269". lspci says: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) I compared the contents of /proc/asound/card*/codec#* with and without a headphone plugged in: je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > no-headphone je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > headphone je...@tp:~$ diff -U 2 no-headphone headphone --- no-headphone2010-05-13 16:42:07.715206723 +0200 +++ headphone 2010-05-13 16:42:15.643206222 +0200 @@ -225,6 +225,6 @@ Node 0x20 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf00040: Mono Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=33 - Processing Coefficient: 0x227 - Coefficient Index: 0x0f + Processing Coefficient: 0xa100 + Coefficient Index: 0x10 Node 0x21 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono Node 0x22 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono These values are the only differences, but they seem to change all the time, no matter whether a headphone is plugged in or not: je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > no-headphone1 je...@tp:~$ cat /proc/asound/card*/codec#* > no-headphone2 je...@tp:~$ diff -U 2 no-headphone1 no-headphone2 --- no-headphone1 2010-05-13 16:39:28.836209887 +0200 +++ no-headphone2 2010-05-13 16:39:31.360207130 +0200 @@ -225,6 +225,6 @@ Node 0x20 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf00040: Mono Processing caps: benign=0, ncoeff=33 - Processing Coefficient: 0x480 - Coefficient Index: 0x0d + Processing Coefficient: 0xb000 + Coefficient Index: 0x0e Node 0x21 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono Node 0x22 [Vendor Defined Widget] wcaps 0xf0: Mono ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: alsa-utils 1.0.22-0ubuntu5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Thu May 13 16:24:23 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100427.1) ProcEnviron: LC_TIME=de_AT.UTF-8 LANGUAGE= LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: alsa-utils + --- + AlsaVersion: Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.21. + Architecture: i386 + ArecordDevices: + List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices + card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC269 Analog [ALC269 Analog] +Subdevices: 1/1 +Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 + AudioDevicesInUse: + USERPID ACCESS COMMAND + /dev/snd/controlC0: jensi 1693 F knotify4 + jensi 1729 F pulseaudio + jensi 1759 F kmix + Card0.Amixer.info: + Card hw:0 'Intel'/'HDA Intel at 0xf2a0 irq 22' +Mixer name : 'Intel G45 DEVCTG' +Components : 'HDA:10ec0269,17aa212c,0014 HDA:80862802,80860101,0010' +Controls : 18 +Simple ctrls : 10 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + HibernationDevice: RESUME=UUID=788a0e69-d97d-4313-8a3d-a7f3891ac886 + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100427.1) + MachineType: LENOVO 28477MG + Package: linux (not installed) + ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.32-22-generic root=/dev/mapper/hostname-root ro quiet splash + ProcEnviron: + LC_TIME=de_AT.UTF-8 + LANGUAGE= + LANG=en_US.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.33-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 + Regression: No + RelatedPackageVersions: linux-firmware 1.34 + Reproducible: Yes + Tags: lucid needs-upstream-testing + Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic i686 + UserGroups: adm admin audio cdrom dialout dip fax floppy fuse lpadmin netdev plugdev sambashare tape video + dmi.bios.date: 04/30/2010 + dmi.bios.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.bios.version: 6JET77WW (1.35 ) + dmi.board.name: 28477MG + dmi.board.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.board.version: Not Available + dmi.chassis.asset.tag: No Asset Information + dmi.chassis.type: 10 + dmi.chassis.vendor: LENOVO + dmi.chassis.version: Not Available + dmi.modalias
