[Bug 241062] [NEW] eog's initial window height too small
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: eog Since hardy, opening an arbitrary image file with eog (Eye of GNOME) may bring up an initial window with an unsufficiant height. As long as an image is smaller than eog's default window size, everything is fine and eog displays the image centered in its window. But if an image is higher that eog's default window size, eog seems to miscalculate an appropriate height for its window to show the image completely in its original size. Even if there is enough screen space, eog opens a window that is too low so the image inside is scaled down to e.g. 98%. At work, I often have to preview image files containing pixel graphics. It is important that they are shown unscaled. In feisty and gutsy, I used eog for this task because it started very fast and showed the images accurately. Unfortunately, starting with hardy, using eog makes things unconvenient. Each time I open eog, I have to manually drag the window bigger to see the image unscaled. When eog starts, its initial window should at least be wide and high enough to show the selected image unscaled if possible. ** Affects: eog (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- eog's initial window height too small https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241062 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 241062] Re: eog's initial window height too small
I think the two bugs point out different issues. My problem is that eog shows the initial image in a slightly too low window so that it is scaled down a bit. Which is not necessary since there is enough screen space available for the window to show up big enough for the image to be shown unscaled and complete. So it's rather about eog's initial window sizing than its scaling behaviour. -- eog's initial window height too small https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/241062 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 205773] Re: Nautilus tries to copy a dragged file into Network on hover and freezes
I encounter the temporary Nautilus freeze, too, when dragging files over the "Network" item in the "Places" sidebar panel. I observed this issue a bit and hope my results can help to clarify things a bit. First, it does not matter how many or what kind of files you drag. It also does not matter whether you drag them from or to the Nautilus window. The mentioned freeze may occur when you start an arbitrary drag- action and hover the items over the "Network" item in Nautilus' "Places" sidebar panel. What happens after the freeze depends on your reaction: If you are patient enough and keep the mouse button pressed all the time during the freeze until Nautilus wakes up again, you can continue the drag-action normally and drop the items at the desired location without any problems. But if you release the mouse button during the freeze, X will post a MOUSE_UP event to the event queue. When Nautilus wakes up after its freeze, it will interprete that event as an intended drop. So it will try to copy the dragged items to "Network" which is where the mouse pointer was when the freeze began. However, copying to "Network" is an unsupported action and will fail with the mentioned error message. This is what I think may cause that freeze: Applications usually analyze the data that is being dragged over them to signal if they would accept the data to be dropped here. This is shown to the user as a symbol next to mouse cursor which can, for example, be a forbidden sign. Since hardy, Nautilus uses gvfs instead of gnome-vfs. gvfs mounts its backends lazily when they are needed. I think there may be a problem with the implemenation of Nautilus' "Network" item. If it is uninitialized, it may take a while to scan the network for nodes. If the user drags any data over the "Network" item, Nautilus asks the "Network" item if the data would be accepted here for drop. If "Network" is uninitialized, it will initialize at this very moment, scanning the network and causing the temporary freeze. -- Nautilus tries to copy a dragged file into Network on hover and freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/205773 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can confirm this issue with Hardy Heron (8.04) - German Version. It seems to be Nautilus-related indeed and can be reproduced easily: · Configure Nautilus to ask on emptying the Trash. · Move some files to Thrash. · Restart Nautilus, e.g. using the command ``pkill nautilus'' on the shell. · Go to Trash and click "Empty Trash". [Bug 150373] Re: creating a 7zip gives error in Gutsy Beta
Unfortunately, I do still encounter this bug in Ubuntu Gutsy with either p7zip or p7zip-full installed. The output in my case is logically the same as shown in the initial bug description. file-roller first creates the archive and adds the files and then tries to do this update that produces the message-box with the text "System error: E_NOTIMPL". The archive file, however, is complete. Reinstalling file-roller or the p7-related packages does not solve this problem. It may have something to do with the number of files to be added to an archive. Some of directories ALWAYS produce this message-box when compressed to 7z using file-roller, others NEVER produce this message- box. I wonder if either file-roller or 7z work in a different way for few or many files. Anyway, this message-box never appeared when I was using Feisty. -- creating a 7zip gives error in Gutsy Beta https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150373 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Unfortunately, the folder that reliably leads to this error message contains business data so I cannot attach it here, but I am still trying to find/setup a folder with arbitrary data that leads to this error message, too. It seems to have something to do with the number of files and the directory structure of the folder to be compressed. I am using file- roller in conjunction with 7z to archive folders that contain Java projects. Java projects naturally do have a deep nested directory strucure with many short files. One folder contains ~1500 files, another one contains ~2500 files. Both result in that error message when compressed. A folder with just 1000 text files and no subdirs, on the other hand, works fine. -- creating a 7zip gives error in Gutsy Beta https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150373 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 150373] Re: creating a 7zip gives error in Gutsy Beta
Okay, I have finally managed to create a test case. The attached 7z-archive contains a folder called "files" with three sub- folders called "folder-1", "folder-2" and "folder-3". Each of those folders contain 1500 short text files. That is a total of 4500 text files. To produce the mentioned message box, please make sure that either "p7zip" or "p7zip-full" is installed. Then, download the attached 7z- archive to any folder, e.g. the desktop, and uncompress it using the context-menu and the respective "extract here" menu item. This will result in the folder "files" to be created on the desktop. Next, use the context-menu and the respective "create archive" menu item on that folder to compress it again. Choose a different name and ".7z" for the archive's type. The expected but irritating message box should appear after archive creation. ** Attachment added: "The mentioned 7z-archive containing many files" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/10172334/files.7z -- creating a 7zip gives error in Gutsy Beta https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/150373 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: openoffice.org OpenOffice.org 2.4.0 in Ubuntu/hardy takes very much more time to load OSD spreadsheet files than OpenOffice.org 2.3.0 in Ubuntu/gutsy did. I work with simple tables. Not much data, basic formatting, no macros. Files that used to load almost instantly with Ubuntu/gutsy now need 5-6 seconds to load with Ubuntu/hardy. The application startup time for OpenOffice.org itself is fine on both versions. It is only the time for loading the files that differs dramatically. One thing that might be interesting: As a test, I uninstalled the Ubuntu/hardy-provided version of OpenOffice.org and installed the current 2.4.0 from OpenOffice.org directly using their DEBs. [Bug 562802] Re: xorg use cpu 100% sometime with firefox
Since this problem affects me, too, I did some test. Maybe the results can help to track down the problem. I am running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (32 Bit) on an AMD 64x2 4800 CPU with an NVidia 8800 GTS GPU on a 1920x1080 display. I am currently using the 195.xxx drivers from the repos but I also tested with vesa, nouveau and even the new nvidia-256.xxx -- only to realize that the selected driver doesn't seem to have an effect on this specific bug. The problem is that Firefox makes Xorg use 100% CPU when initially displaying or when scrolling certain pages. On some pages this leads to heavy delays and scrolling turns out to be very jumpy. The effect is most noticable when grabbing the vertical scrollbar and quickly dragging it up and down. It's not clear what exactly triggers the problem. There are long pages that scroll smoothly and short pages that stutter (even this one). But I found one page that reliably stutters on my configuration so I used that one for my following tests: http://blog.thesilentnumber.me/2010/04/ubuntu-1004-post-install-guide- what-to.html Before Lucid, I was using Interpid which came with Firefox 3.0.x (IIRC) where I didn't have the problem. So I downloaded Firefox 3.0.19 from mozilla.org and gave it a try on Lucid. When fully loaded, the above page "flies" with Firefox 3.0.19. Though it's quite long and contains many images, scrolling is fast and smooth. Next, I tried with Firefox 3.5.19. Here the problem began: Scrolling stutters on the above page and makes Xorg take 100% CPU. For fun, I also tried the current snapshot of Firefox 3.7 aka Minefield and amazingly: The problem has gone again! Minefield does not fly as fast as 3.0.19 but it did not stutter as 3.5.19 and 3.6.3 did. The GPS Babel faq recommends adding following to/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist: # stop garmin_gps serial from loading for USB garmin devices blacklist garmin_gps However in Ubuntu 12.04, there is not blacklist file, it's been replaced by blacklist.conf and that already contains the lines: # most apps now use garmin usb driver directly (Ubuntu: #114565) blacklist garmin_gps Based on the GPS Babel faq, I also created a file /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules with contents: SYSFS{idVendor}=="091e", SYSFS{idProduct}=="0003", MODE="666" This had no effect. I had these problems earlier with the 12.04-beta2 after compiling qlandkartegt myself. By placing the following text in /etc/udev/rules.d/51-garmin.rules, I can now download waypoints and tracks from Qlandkartegt: SUBSYSTEM=="usb", ATTR{idVendor}=="091e", ATTR{idProduct}=="0003", MODE="0660", GROUP="plugdev" See Herbert's post at http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?thread_name=20120501195315.6be61fc8%40max&forum_name =qlandkartegt-users I found some differences on my system. I don't have a /var/log/daemon.log file. Running "sudo udevadm control --reload-rules" did not work for me, a restart was required. I tried to replicate the steps above but gebabbel is not present on my computer although gpsbabel is. The main thing for me is that I can use Qlandkartegt normally again under Ubuntu 12.04 (cf. duplicate bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/991327). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/991652 Title: Must run gpsbabel (gebabbel) as root to access Garmin usb: To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gpsbabel/+bug/991652/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1357725] [NEW] printer set to print 16 pages per side by default
Public bug reported: I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04.01. When I tried to print something for the first time, the result was tiny. After searching the web, I found that the problem was that the printer setting in Print Manager was set to 16 pages per side. The printer is an "EPSON-Epson-Stylus-Office-BX535WD". The setting can be found by opening "Print Manager", right-clicking the printer and selecting "Properties", the n selecting the fifth option "Print queue options" (I have a Dutch language system, I'm guessing at the correct translations). Here "pages per side was set to 16, for this printer driver at least. This problem has been reported in 2011 as Question #159185, "When I print from office, the text is real small and in the upper lefthand corner of the page, how do I enlarge it to normal page size?". This solution was not reported there, and is not related to LibreOffice but to a printer setting. I hope this is sufficiently clear and can help Ubuntu to avoid this problem in the future. This problem was reported in 2010 but there are earlier reports dating back to 2008. I'm fairly sure the problem still occurs but there seems little point in putting any effort in it now. [Bug 577340] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI, with or without KMS
I still can't resume after suspending using Ubuntu 12.04 beta-1 with updates installed. But my computer doesn't (always) freeze on resume. Yesterday, I could see the login screen flashing by repeatedly with noise in between (couldn't log in of course). On a second attempt, numbers kept scrolling by at high speed, one of the system logs I assume. No disk activity the second time. The first time, the login screen pauzed and disk activity ceased briefly if I pressed Ctrl-Alt-F1 to Ctrl-Alt-F7 (could have been coincidence though, the screen pauze didn't always work).
