[Bug 217196] Re: Totem-gstreamer produces artifacts during playback

2008-07-04 Thread Tim Fuchs
This is fixed in intrepid by the way, but I stillt have the problem on
my notebook with hardy.

There are also other issues like async playback and occasional crashes.

Maybe the gestreamer plugins should be updated in hardy.

[Bug 303264] Re: German translation error in .desktop file

2008-11-30 Thread Tim Fuchs
I'm sorry but your translation is still wrong.

It still says Website, which is obviously falls because the menu entry
doesn't open the website but the program itself.

I filed an upstream bug about this, let's hear from the official devs,
the main dev is german so he will probably know what to do.

I filed an upstreamer bug about this:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=562753

My suggestion for translation is "Cheese Webcam-Studio"

[Bug 294032] Re: Nautilus crashes when mounting an ISO using "mount archive"

2009-01-29 Thread Tim Fuchs
I made a backtrace for this two weeks ago but as I expected the bug
report got closed a s a duplicate:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/316747

That's a big flaw of Launchpad because when you submit a bug through
apport you can either open a new bug or subscribe to an existing one.
When you do the latter, you lose alle the submitted data. If you do the
former your bug will be closed as a duplicate (except if the bug didn't
exist before but that's rarely the case in my experience).

Then there is a third bug report here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/259343

which has been marked as fixed because Jaunty doesn't have the bug
anymore. I nominated the bug for Intrepid but I have no idea whether
this will get accepted or even who has the power to decide.

All in all the whole process is not very transparent and complicated.
I tried my best to report the bug and provide information but I don't excpect
this to get fixed before Jaunty gets released (this is based on my experience
with previous Ubuntu version and other bugs). Then I will upgrade my Ubuntu
install and this bug will be gone, but there will be other regressions and the
whole game starts from the beginning.

Sorry for the little rant at the and but as much as I like Ubuntu, bug
fixing in released versions is definitely none of the projects
qualities.

[Bug 344228] Re: Deleting an image that's used as a desktop wallpaper removed it as a wallpaper without notice

2009-06-24 Thread Tim Fuchs
In my opinion, this is not a real bug.

If you delete an image, it can no longer be opened. That's true for
every file.

As the original poster stated, his wallpaper changed immediately. So he
can restore the file from trash and learned his lesson, no harm done.

But on the other hand I can kind of understand the usability
implications of this.

If this is supposed to get solved, then I suggest the following
solution:

The thumbnail viewer when changing the background will show the files in
/usr/share/backgrounds and ~/.local/share/backgrounds

If a new wallpaper gets chosen it is copied to the user folder, the
button "Remove" in the wallpaper dialog gets replace with a "Delete"
button

This is pretty much the same behaviour as the theme chooser btw.

The implementation however doesn't seem trivial to implement, so I am
not sure if this is really a papercut

[Bug 144348] Re: Does not remember window position

2009-06-25 Thread Tim Fuchs
I am using the current version in karmic 2.27.3 and the bug is still
present for me in the following form:

I always keep my contact list in the upper right corner. When I minimize
empathy to the tray and restore it the contact list is still at the
right site but it moved a bit down. When I do this a few times the
contact list is in the lower right corner.

This isn't really a severe bug but it's still very annoying. In the case
that empathy will be the default for karmic I am adding this to the
hundred paper cuts.

[Bug 344228] Re: Deleting an image that's used as a desktop wallpaper removed it as a wallpaper without notice

2009-06-29 Thread Tim Fuchs
Copying only one image to some predefined location is a bad solution
IMO, and here's why:

when a user opens the wallpaper configuration, there are two buttons at
the bottom, Add and Remove. When he now adds an image, what should
happen in your opinion? Should the old wallpaper be overwritten or
should there be a dialog asking so? Maybe the user wants to keep the old
wallpaper.

This is even worse than the current situation, because right now, the
user must explicitly delete the wallpaper himself.

The hard link seems also impractical, so I still stand by my proposed
solution a few posts up.

[Bug 281539] [NEW] Display doesn't refresh properly

2008-10-10 Thread Tim Fuchs
Public bug reported:

I am experiencing a weird bug on my laptop where the screen, or usually party
of the screen don't update.

It's hard to explain but basically when I do something that changes part
of the screen (or rather should change) the area in question keeps
displaying the old content. When I move with the mouse over the area in
question some small parts get updated, like a link or a button that I
hover. When I click inside the window or move it the display updates and
everything is fine.

This happens with all software but especially with firefox.

I am using the closed Nvidia driver, but i also use that one and the
same software on my desktop PC, which works fine.

I have a Dell XPS M1330, nvidia 8400gs, core 2 duo

The issue is known as these links show:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=118088
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=943951

I attached a screenshot to show how my System Monitor looks like when I

[Bug 333418] Re: Flashplayer locks up when (preferences) menu is opened

2009-03-04 Thread Tim Fuchs
When I reported the bug I used Intrepid, now I upgraded to Jaunty.

I am using Ubuntu 32 bit

Reinstalling the Plugin didn't change anything.

Btw, which one is the 'official' package now?
At first the flash package was called "flashplugin-nonfree", then it was
changed to "adobe-flashplugin" in intrepid and now in Jaunty both exist and
"flashplugin-nonfree" has a higher version number.

It's very hard to do a good bug report on this because of the closed
source nature of flash.

[Bug 333418] [NEW] Flashplayer locks up when (preferences) menu is opened

2009-02-23 Thread Tim Fuchs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

When a flashplayer menu is opened, e.g. the menu that comes up when you
right click and select preferences the flashplayer locks up and doesn't
react to input anymore.

This is not a real problem with the preferences menu because it is
pretty much useless anyway but it makes all flash files that require
video or sound input useless because you can't grant them access to a
device.

Example:

Go to YouTube and open the Quickcapture tool
(http://www.youtube.com/my_videos_quick_capture)
A menu opens up asking you to grant access to your webcam.
You cannot grant access because the menu doesn't react to input anymore.

I realize flash is closed source and there's not much anyone can do about this
except Adobe, but it's still a bug and maybe there is a workaround available.

[Bug 57996] Re: Mixer applet shows different icon in bottom panel than in top panel

2006-09-03 Thread Tim Fuchs
The problems is because of the panel size.

The panel size you can set in the GUI is 25 minimum but when you set it
manually in gconf-editor to 24 all icons are the right size.

I say all icons because the icon of my contact-applet suddenly changed
to a bigger version, as did the terminal icon.

I suggest to either fix the code that selects the different icon sizes
or to make it possible to choose a panel size of 24px again.

[Bug 219080] [NEW] [Rgeression] Evince prints pages in a strange order

2008-04-18 Thread Tim Fuchs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

I have to print out presentation slides for university and because they
don't contain much text and the fonts are big I want to print out
several pages on one sheet of paper.

I open the PDF in evince, go to Print, select print to file (I print out
the stuff at my university and I can only upload .ps files to them) and
press print.

The resulting .ps file has a strange layout, like this:

(I know that is some bad ASCII art, but I think you get the idea.)

-
| 2 | 4 |
-
| 1 | 3 |
-

What I obviously want is something like this:

-
| 1 | 2 |
-
| 3 | 4 |
-

The problem is that you can't select the orientation of the paper.
Evince assumes that the sheet of paper is vertical, while it's actually
horizontal.

[Bug 217196] [NEW] Totem-gstreamer produces artifacts during encoding

2008-04-14 Thread Tim Fuchs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Totem randomly shows artifacts when watching a video. Look at the
screenshot I attached and you'll know what I mean.

This isn't a problem with the video itself, when I rewind and play the
exact section again it's fine.

I don't know very much about video encoding but it seems to me that
there is problem with handling the different types of frames. GStreamer
seems to drop key-frames so that alterations made to that frame will
actually be applied to an older, wrong key-frame, producing a garbled
picture.

[Bug 22291] Re: totem: switch to fullscreen doesn't work well

2007-07-31 Thread Tim Fuchs
I experience this bug too, so I confirmed it.
This bug existed basically forever in Ubuntu, I us it since warty and it has
been there IIRC

It's not extremely annyoing so I never bothered to report it but I
stumbled on this bug now, and seeing it affecting other users I realized
it might be a bigger deal than I thought,

The thing is: most of the time fullscreen works ok but sometimes (maybe
1 in 10-20 times) it behaves as Christophe explained.

I will try it with xine-ui in the next days and post my experience here.

[Bug 159398] System randomly freezes / locks up

2007-11-01 Thread Tim Fuchs
Public bug reported:

My system randomly locks up hard, I can't move the mouse, I can't do any
input with the keyboard.

When it locks up the hard drive also stops doing noises, so the system
is completely stalled and I can only shut it down by pressing the power
button for a few seconds.

At first I suspected the nvidia driver to be the culprit but the problem
also occurs with the nv driver.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with my wireless card, because I
can reproduce the error by clicking around in network-admin and
enabling/disabling my wlan card.

My wlan card is a miniPCI card, lshw outputs this:

02:00.0 Network controller: Intersil Corporation ISL3890 [Prism GT/Prism
Duette]/ISL3886 [Prism Javelin/Prism Xbow] (rev 01)

Somebody at the forums suggested to add noapic to the kernel arguments,
but this didn't change anything.

[Bug 159398] Re: System randomly freezes / locks up

2007-11-26 Thread Tim Fuchs
My /var/log/kern.log contains about 200.000 (yep, that's two hundred
thousand) lines that look like this:

Nov 27 01:25:23 localhost kernel: [ 1445.723763] wlan0: TKIP decrypt
failed for RX frame from 00:13:49:a1:28:39 (res=-3)

This hardens my initial assumption that it has something to do with
wireless.

Does anybody know which package ehis bug should be assigned to? I'm
using the prism54 wireless driver, so is this a kernel issue?

[Bug 159398] Re: System randomly freezes / locks up

2007-11-17 Thread Tim Fuchs
Ok so it's been two weeks and nothing changed.

There are several forum threads describing similar problems:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=587905
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=585714

One thread has 11 pages, the other has 22 pages so it seems I'm not
alone with this problem to say the least.

Is there anything we can do to help, post back traces, config files..
anything?

So far it seems there is no official comment by an Ubuntu developer.

[Bug 125075] Re: nm-applet: requests keyring password, doesn't use it

2007-11-17 Thread Tim Fuchs
My keyring manager also behaves very weird/annoying, similar but still
slightly different to the description of the OP.

That's what happens when I start my computer:

1. A dialog pops up and asks for my keyring password which stores my WPA
key. When I enter the password and press ok the same dialog pops up
again. I can do this as often as I want.

2. I press deny to get rid of that useless dialog.

3. A dialog pops up that looks just like the first one except it has a
little check box under the password entry which says something like
"Remember the password". While the checkbox doesn't seem to have any
effect whatsoever this dialog actually accepts my keyring password and a
connection to my wireless is established

4. A dialog pops up asking for my password again, it behaves just like
the first one, i.e. it pops up again and again when I enter my password
so I just click deny and I'm fine.

It's also interesting what happens when I lose my wlan connection (which
happens randomly every few hours, but that's an other story):

1. I choose my wlan network from the list.
2. A dialog pops up asking me for my keyring password. When I enter my password
and press OK the dialog just ops up again. When I don't enter the password and
click DENY network-manager connects to my wlan. Security-wise, this behaviour
is.. errr... interesting.

Even more annoying is the behaviour when I connect to a WebDAV share
with nautilus:

1. I choose Places -> Connect to server and enter the WebDAV details
2. I click on the new icon named after the connection on my desktop
3. Around ten dialogs pop up asking me for the password.
4. Whenever I do sth. in the nautilus window of the WebDAV connection, i.e.
create a file, open a folder... 10 new dialogs pop up asking me for my
password. It doesn't matter which of the options in the dialog (Forget password
immediately, Save password for this session, Save password forever) I choose.

So to sum it up: Using anything that accesses a keyring ib Ubuntu Gutsy
is either annyoing or practically unusable, Any suggestions?

Public bug reported:

When I open a website the plugin loads and the control bar is shown

[Bug 436710] [NEW] network switch does not enable wireless when it has been off on boot

2009-09-25 Thread Tim Fuchs
Public bug reported:

There have been similar bugs in older versions but this one occured on
my machine in the karmic cycle so i report it again:

I have a Dell XPS M1330 with the following wireless module:

0c:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or
AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61)

When I boot my notebook with the wireless switch turned to off, I cannot
enable wireless later without rebooting.

No Networks are shown and righ-clicking on the nm-applet shows the
"Enable Wireless" option greyed out.

The wireless switch also controls the bluetooth module, which works as
it should.

2009-10-01 Thread Tim Fuchs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tango-icon-theme

The tango icon theme is missing many of the emblems you used to be able
to choose in Nautilus,

Examples for this include but are not limited to following emblems:

music
videos
templates
public

This regression wasn't introduced in karmic, it already was in intrepid,
maybe even hardy.
